PANEL-RAISING MACHINE.
To all ,whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WoLvIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Clair, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panel- Raising Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wood working machinery and more particularly to a machine adapted for tenoning or panel raising whereby a single rotary head or cutter forms both faces of a tenon or both sides of a panel margin in one operation.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a panel raiser or tenoning machine that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view in detail of one form of cutter head; Fig. 3 is a View in detail of a cutter head on line -w of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, is a view in cross section of the head on line y/-fz/f, Fig. .3; Fig. 5, is a View in detail of an edging cutter; Fig. 6, is a view in detail of one form of knife; and Fig. 7 is a view' in detail of different form of knife adapted for cross cutting.
Referring to the drawings an upright shaft 1 is journaled in suitable bearings 2I that are mounted on a frame 3 ofany preferred design. The shaft is driven by a suitable pulley f1 or other preferred means. The portion of the shaft above the upper bearing 2 is slightly reduced to form a spindle 5 on which a cutter head 6 is secured. In preferred form the latter consists of a pair of oppositely disposed disks 7 each centered on the spindle by an exteriorly screwthreaded bushing 8, on which the disks are adjustable longitudinally of spindle. face of the edger 9 to a considerable distance beyond the margin of the disks 7. Each blade is secured in place by a tapered pin 15 with nut 14 which wedges the blade firmly in position. By this arrangement of or profile of the cut made. The blades are rigidly supported at the outer edge of the work so that the latter is accurately shaped, the outer portions of the blades forming the other part of the cut. Furthermore, as the disks are separately adjustable to and from the edging cutter, any marginal wear of the knives is readily compensated for.
In operation a single header of this type performs the work which is usually accomplished by opposing heads or by a plurality of heads acting in succession upon the work which must be advanced from cutter to cutter. This last step by step operation takes considerable time which is not necessary in the working out of a panel or tenon by the form of cutter herein disclosed.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I donot care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A panel raising machine comprising a frame, an upright shaft journaled thereon having an upper reduced spindle portion, an edging cutter on the spindle, a pair of disks adjustable longitudinally of the spindle in parallel spaced relation on each side of the edging cutterprovided with transverse slots in their proximate faces, knives on edge in the slots of greater width than the slot parts a cutter head is obtained which oper- 4 ates simultaneously on both margins of a panel to be tenoned or raised, the shape of the knife blades determining the character depths extending beyond the disk peripheries, and taper pins detachably secured in the disks and adapted to wedge the knives in place.

In a panel raising machine, an upright shaft having a reduced portion forming a spindle, and a cutter head consisting of a pair of collars on the spindle, a pair of exteriorly screwthreaded bushings on the spindle between the collars, an edging cutter on the spindle between the bushings, a nut elampin the collars and interposed parts on the spin le, and disksV longitudinally adjustable on the bushings provided with detachably secured knives on their proximate faces that proj ect from said faces and extend beyond the peripheries of the disks. y

In a panel raising machine, an upright shaft having a reduced portion forming a spindle, a pair of collars on the spindle, a pair of exteriorly screwthreaded bushings on the spindle between the collars, an edging cutter on the spindle between the bushin s, a nut clamping the collars and interposed parts on the spindle, disks yeach screwthreaded o-n the bushings and provided with transverse slots in their proximate faces, knives in the slots extending beyond the peripheries of the disks with their cutting edges projecting beyond the slotted faces of the disks, and means for securing each knife in place. y
