To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thal l Enxrs'r L. J. Davis, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at- Pittsburg. in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lamp burners and has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a burner of such class with a pilot light capable of being sl'iifted in the path of the wick so that a lamp can be ignited when occasion so requires and the invention further has for its object to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for extinguisl'ling the wick when desired.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a lamp burner which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, ctlieient in its use, readily attached to the reservoir of alamp, conveniently operated for the purpose of lighting or extinguishing the wick, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown one embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood. that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence is had to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation partly in section of a burner in accordance with this invention and carrying a chimney, the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the central portion of the burner broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of the operating shafts.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a wick casing provided with brackets 2 for supporting a revoluble tubular shaft 3 which is utilized for elevating and. lowering the wick 5 and further for actuating an extinguisher for the wick. To provide for elevating and lowering the wick 3, the shaft 3 has fixed thereto a pair of star wheels l which extend through openings 5 in the wick casing 1 and engage the wick 3 so that. when the shaft 3 is rotated in one direction, the star wheels 4- will elevate the wick 3", and when the shaft 3 is rotated in the opposite direction, the wheels 4 will lower the wick.
The wick casing 1 is supported in a known manner by a burner body 1 of known construction and which supports the lamp chimney Extending through the top of the burner body 41- approximately centrally thereof is a lever arm 10 which is fulcrumcd il'ltcrnlediate its ends in the lugs 1.0 carried by the upper face of the top of the burner body 41. Connected to the upper end of the lever arm 10 is a shoulder 1.1 which constitutes an extinguisher member and which is adapted to be shifted upon the top of the wick casing 1 so as to extinguish the wick 3. The lower end of the lever arm 1.0 has attached thereto a crank J which in turn is connected to a gear wheel 7 revolubly supported by a bearing 8 carried by the wick casing l. Meshing with the gear wheel 7 is a gear wheel 6 which is fixed to the shaft It is obvious that from the foregoing arrangement, when the shaft 3 is rotated in one direction, the extinguisher member 11 will be swung over the wick casing 1 so as to extinguish the wick 3 and that when the shaft 1-3 is revolved in the opposite direction, the extinguisher member 11 will be swung clear of the wick casing 1. The shaft 3 is provided with a knurled hand wheel 12 to facilitate the rotation of the shaft 3.
The shaft 3 projects outwardly from the burner body t. Extending through and of greater length lhan the shaft 3 is a shaft or rod 13 provided at one end with a knurled hand wheel 14: and at its other end with a beveled gear wheel 15 which meshes with a beveled gear 16 mounted upon a wick tube 17 which is rotatably supported within the burner body and which is vertically disposed and arranged in proximity to the wick casing 1. The upper end of the wick tube 1.7 projects at right angles as at 18 and mounted within the tube 17 is a wick 1.9. The wick within the tube 17 serves functionally as a pilot light and the angular end 18 of the tube 17 is adapted to extend over the wick 3 when the casing 17 is shifted in one direction so as to ignite the wick 3. The tube 17 is shifted due to the meshing of the gears 15 and 16 and the rotation of the gear 15 by the shaft 13. The pilot light is indicated by the reference character 20.
From the foregoing construction and arrangement of parts, it is obvious that a lamp burner in accordance with this invention not only embodies means for elevating and lowering the wick 3* but also means for igniting and extinguishing the wick when occasion so requires and when the wick 3 is lowered, the extinguisher member will be shifted to operative position to snuff the wick and when the wick is elevated, the extinguisher member will be moved to inoperative position, that is to say, away from the wick so as not to interfere with the flame.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A lamp burner comprising a burner body, a wick casing carried thereby and provided with a wick, elevating and lowering means for the wick, an extinguisher member for the wick pivotally connected to the burner body, an operative connection between said member and said means for shifting said member to extinguish the wick,
a shift-able pilot light supported by the burner body, and means supported by said elevating and lowering means and operatively engaging with the pilot light for shifting it to ignite the wick.
2. A lamp burner comprising a burner body, a wick casing carried thereby and provided with a wick, a pair of rotatable shafts one arranged within the other, means carried by one of the shafts for elevating and lowering the wick when the said shaft is operated, an extinguisher member carried by the burner body, an operative connection between that shaft which operates the means for elevating and lowering the wick and the extinguisher member for moving the latter to and from operative position when the wick is elevated and lowered, a shiftable pilot light, and an operative connection between the other of the shafts and said. pilot light for shifting it to ignite the wick.
