To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CnAnLns ll. Srinwnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain lmln'ovements for (las-Stoves.
My invention comprises improvements for gas stoves whereby the gas is automatically turned olf upon removing a vessel or other article which has been placed upon the stove in position to be heated.

The apparatus, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises the gas supply pipe 1, the burner 2, the discharge duct or nozzle 3 leading from the supply pipe to the burner, the valve t having the lever 5 for controlling the flow through the duct, and the rest (3 for supporting an article to be heated as the skillet 7.
A lever arm S, having the ournal 9 adapted to rock in the bearings 10, .is provided with a bent outer end which is adapted to move through the slot 11 in the rest (i, and fixed to the journal 9 is the arm 12, which acts as a bearing for the oscillating detent 13; the detent being connected to the arm 12 by the pintle 14 and resting normally on the seat 15 thereof.
A slide 1G, having the lug 17 thereon, is adapted to reciprocate in the ways or bearings 18`of the box 0r casing 19, which is supported on the stove bar 20, the casing inclosing the parts 12, 13 and 17 and having in the walls thereof the bearings 10. An arm 21 on the rear end of the casing and an arm 22 on the forward end of the slide are connected by a coiled spring 23 which acts to hold the slide in the position shown in Fig. 2. A tension member, as the chain 24, connects the forward end of the slide 1G and the arm 25 of the lever 5.
Vhen the apparatus is not in use, the coiled spring 23 holds the slide 16 and valve t in the positions shown in Fig. 2. Vhen it is desired to use the apparatus, the
l lever 5 is operated to place the valve -l and lslide 1.(3 in the position shown in Fig. Il, the detent lil now engaging the lug 1T, where it is held by placing the vessel T on the. rest t3 and the lever S. lVhen the vessel T is removed and the lever S released, the spring 23 draws back the slide and closes the valve, the lug acting through the detent to turn the crank-lever in its bearing until the detent is lifted out of engagement with the lug when the, lever drops back to its normal position.
.lt will be observed that the slide tti by the the retraction of spring 225, from the position shown in Fig. I) to the position shown in Fig. 2, elevates the arm S to the dotted .line position shown in Fig. 2 for an instant only. The arm falls back so that its topmost part lies in the plane of the stove`s top or rest (3 as soon as the lug 1T has passed under the detent til and it occupies this position at all times excepting during the insta nt of its elevation by the rearward movement of the lug. (lonsequently the top of the stove is without obstruction above its level to interfere with the movement of articles thereon as has been the very objectionable character of previous constructions for the general purpose of my apparatus.
lIlaving described my invention, I claim:
1. ln a gas stove, a burner, a rest above said burner, a duct leading to said burner, a valve for Acontrolling said duct, mechanism for auttmiatically operating said valve, means movable relatively to said rest and adapted to be engaged by an article on said rest, and a detent for engaging said mechanism and preventing it from operating said valve, said detent being connected with said means and held in engagement'y with said mechanism by the pressure of said article acting through said means.
2. In a gas stove, a burner, means for supporting an article above said burner, a movable device adapted to lie when at rest beneath the top of said supporting.means, a duct leading to said burner, a valve for controlling the [low through said duct, mechanism for automatically closing said valve, and connected with said device a detent for engaging said mechanism and preventing it from operating said valve, said detent being held in position to hold said mechanism by said article on said device, and said detent releasing said mechanism when said article is withdrawn from said device.
