Application filed December My invention relates to a control 'for fluid fuel burners and particularly to that type oitl control or safety device in which the supply of fuel is automatically cut off whenever a predetermined amount of unconsumed oil has escaped from the burner either because of the extinction of the flame. or from any other cause.
The obiect ot my invention is to provide a simple and reliable device of the class referred to which will be particularly adapted for use in connection with domestic heating plants and similar oil burning` devices receiving little or no skilled attention.

The various parts of the device are earried by a hase plate 10 adapted to be secured by `feet 11 to any suitable support and provided with upwardly extending wings l2 carrying the valve casing. This casing corsists ot a lower part 13 and an upper part 1411 between which is clamped a corrugated resilient diaphragm 15 which is slightly sprung toward the part 13 for the purpose set iorth in my Patent No. 1,550,047 granted A/iugust 1S, 1925, and has a valve stem 16 secured in its center in the manner set forth in said pat ent. On the upper end of the stein a conical valve 17 cooperating with an opening 18 in the upper part of the valve casing and its lower rounded end projects through a central aperture in the lower part of the casing. lhe opening 18 forms a communication between the oil chamber, it'ormed between the upper part oit the casing and the diaphragm, and the oil supply pipe 19. A pipe 2O leads from the oil chamber to the burner, diagrammatically shown at 21 (Figure 1) and the overflow pipe 22 ot this burner discharges into the oil cup hereinafter to be described.

This projection bears on plate 28 hinged at one end to the regulating lever 27 and provided at the other end with a lug 28 having an inclined face cooperating with the end of.' a screw 29 threaded in a lug 3() carried on the leva' 2? to vary the inclination of the plate 26. The rear end ot the lever 27 bears on an adjusting screw ill threaded in the base and .provided with a lock nut intermediate of its ends the lever is pivoted on a stud 35i on the base and is held in place by a. stationarv pointer 31tclainped against the end ot' the stud by a screw 35, 'lhe 'front end ot the lever runs on a track 36 and i s provided with a thumb piece 37 and with indicating numerals, as shown in Figures 5 and 7. Supported on pivot bearings 38 is a lover 39 provided at one end with an oil cup 4l() and at the other with` a counterbaiance 4l. lzivoted in lugs 42 on the base is the actuating weight 43 having` an arm L.tl enga a trigger 45 on the eounterbalance and a cam lo adapted to actuate the plate 26. A. stop el? limits the downward movement o? the outer end ot the lever 39.
ln adjusting my device the lever 27 is moved to its extreme right hand pofliition so that the pointer indicates the numeral. (l on the lever. ln this position the projection 25 will bear on the plato 26 directly over the axis of its hinge. The adjusting screw 81 is now rotated to raise the rear end oi? the lever until the valves 17 completely closes the opening 18 so as to prevent tl w ot oil .trom the supply pipe to the oil chamber and is secured in position by lock nut 31. This adjus'tment is permanent and the screw 31 need not thereafter be moved except to take up wear on the valve. rlhe dimensions oit the parts should be such that after their adjustment the lever will be slightly sprung in the direction of its length so that the resulting friction on the adjusting screw and track 36 will be sutiicient to hold the lever in any position in which it is placed.
To adjust the device to the particular burner to which it is applied the lever 27 is moved to its-eXtreme left hand position, as shown in Figure 7, in which position the projection 25 bears on the plate 26 at the end opposite the hinge. Screw 29 is now ged by.

moved in or out until the flow of oil is just sutlicient 'for the maximum operation of the burner. By moving the lever more or less toward the right any oil flow 'from maximum to complete cut oil can now be obtained. 1When the device is in operation if the llame should be extinguished or torv any other reason excess oil should be delivered from the overflow pipe 22 it will accumulate in the cup l0 until its weight is sufficient to overcome the weight ot the eounterbalance 4l when the lever 39 will tilt on its tulcrum, as shown in dotted lines at the right hand side of lligure l. lThis will cause the trigger 45 to be disengaged from the arm ifi as to allow the actuating weight 43 to drop, as shown in dotted lines at the left hand side oi Figure il. l/TJhen the weight drops the cam L2 will engage the tree end ol2 the plate 2G and raise it, thus seating the valve l? and cutting oil the oil supply. lWhile raising the weightwill open the valve the parts cannot maintained in this position until the oil. cup is emptied, which :may readily be acomplished by lifting the lever 89, together with the attached weight and cup 'from its fulcrum.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States is:
l. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a valve, ot a movable member for closing said valve, a control lever having 'an inclined 'face cooperating with said member to regulate the valve, and overflow actuated means operating on said member independently o1 the control leveiI to automatically close the valve.
2. ln a device oit the class described, the combination with a valve, of a movable member for closing said valve, a control lever having an adjustable inclined face cooperating with said member to regulate the valve, and overflow actuated means operating on said member independently of the control lever to automatically close the Y valve.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a base, of a valve casing supported thereon, a valve in said casing, a movable member arranged between said base and valve casing lior actuating said valve, a control lever having an adjustable inclined tace cooperating with said member to regulate the valve, and overflow actuated means operating on said member independently ot the control lever to automatically close the valve.
5. ln a device ot' the class described, the combination with a valve, of a movable member for closing said valve, a control lever, a plate carried by said lever and having an inclined tace cooperating with said member to regulate the valve, means for varying the inclination of said face, and overflow actuated means operating on said member independently of the control lever to automatically close the valve.
G. ln a device oi' the class described, the combination with a valve, of a movable member tor closing said valve, a control lever, a plate carried by said lever and having an inclined 'lace cooperating with said meinber to regulate the valve, means for varying the inclination of said face, independent means adjusting the tace toward or away iroin said member without varying its inclination, and overllow actuated means operating on said member to automatically close the valve.
7. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a base, of a valve casing supported thereon, a valve in said casing, a pivoted member for actuating said valve, a control lever arranged with one end adjacent to said member, a screw in the base tor moving the end of said lever toward or away from said member, a plate hinged to said lever and having an inclined face cooperating with said vmember, means for varying the inclination oia said tace, and overflow actuated means operating on said member to automatically close the valve.
8. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a valve, of a movable member for closing said valve, a control lever having an inclined lace cooperating with said member to regulate the valve, an actuating weight provided y'ith a cam cooperating with said member, and a tilting oil cup for releasing said weight to automatically close the valve.
