GAS-CONTROL VALVE.
Application filed Sept-ember 1, 1923. Serial No. 660,521.
To allwlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I ERVIN CAHOW, a citizen of the United tates, and residing at Detroit, inthe county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Control Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for closing the fuel-control valves of gas burners whenever the supply fails and whenever the flame is discontinued for any other reason, and its object is to provide a device of this character which shall be entirely automatlc in its action, which shall be simple and reliable, and which can be produced at low cost.
This invention consists in a control valve for gas-burners embodying a valve seat, a valve and a spring to hold it on its seat,
and means connected to said valve by means of which said valve may be held away from its seat and which releases said valve whenever the valve is moved farther from its seat.
It further consists in combination with a valve of this character, of an actuating member affected by the temperature of the space around or adjacent the burner, which member when thus affected opens the valve still farther and permits the valve-opening means to return to its normal inoperative position.
It also consists in the details of construc tion illustrated in the accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is an elevation of a water-heater equipped with my improved control valve. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the valve. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the upper part thereof.

Many serious accidents have been caused by the ignition of bodies of gas which have escaped from gas-burners after the flame thereof has been extinguished because of a temporary failure of the gas supply or because of a defect in the mechanism or for other reasons. The present invention is designed to close the gas passage to the burner when the flame is extinguished and to prevent a renewal of such flow until a movable member is manually shifted to reopen such gas passage.

The valve body 1 has a diaphragm or partition 2 provided with a passage 3 adapted to be closed by the valve 4, which may be (of any desired construction. A plug or cover 5 is bored to receive the slidable stem 6 normally held down by the'spring 7. A pin 8 on the stem 6 is the pivot of a cam 9 provided with a seat 10 so that when the cam is swung t0 the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the stem 6 and valve 4 are elevated to move the valve from its seat. This cam engages the nut 11 of the stuffing box at the top of the plug 5. A handle 12 is provided to operate this cam to lift the valve 1 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The heater shown in Fig. 1 is of well known construction and is merely shown as an embodiment of this invention. A shell 14 encloses a water-coil 15 and ring burner 16 which receives gas from the pipe 17 connected to the control valve 1. Within the coil or at any other desirable or convenient location, is a thermostat, preferably a bar 18 which expands at a higher rate than the the shell 14. A pin 19 on the top of the shell is the fulcrum of the lever 20 and the thermostat bar 18 extends from the seat 22 of the lever 20 and raises its outer end 23 whenever fuel gas is ignited at the burner 16.
The free end of the lever is perforated to receive the rod 24 which constitutes an extension of the stem 6, the upper end of this rod being threaded to receive the nut 25. The operation of this device is as fol- When the burner is to be used, the handle 12 is swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to open the valve and the gas is ignited. Nothing further is required. As soon as the bar 18 becomes sufficiently hot and expands, it swings up this lever 20 which engages the nut 25 and lifts the stem 6 still farther, sufficiently to free the cam 9 and permit the handle 12 to swing to horizontal position.
The temperature of the bar 18 at which it lifts the stem 6 is determined by the nut 25 on the rod 24: which may be screwed up or down to adjust this device for higher fore the stem 6 is lifted to release the handle 12.
As soon as the flame is extinguished, the bar 18 cools and contracts, permitting the lever to swing down under the pull of the spring 7 and the valve 4 to be forced down by the spring to close the passage 3. The passage then remains closedun'til the handle 12 is again swung up manually to the dotted line position.

In coinbirration With the supply pipe of a gasburner, a valve to control the flow of gas to the burner, and a stem connected thereto, manually operable means operativel y connected to said stem to move the stem to open the valve a predetermined disance and hold it in such position, a thermostat to move the stem still farther and release it from said'manually operable means when the effect of the heat of the burner on the thermostat reaches a, predetermined degree and to hold thevalve open, and an adjustable conneotion between the thermostat andstem to determine such degree.
