ITED @FATIE PATENT CHARLES E. HENDRIX, OF ASHLANID, MISSOURI.
B X-FRONT FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. I'IENDRIX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Ashland, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Front Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a fastener for detachably securing the transparent fronts used upon boxes for displaying commodities, such as crackers, offered for sale, and it has for its object the production of a simple eflicient and inexpensive fastener of this description.
Figure I is a perspective view of a box and front therefor, with my fasteners illustrated as they appear in use. Fig. II is a perspective view of the rear end of one of the fasteners, and the finger piece thereon.
In the accompanying drawings: A designates a box of the kind in which crackers and other commodities are shipped, and which, after the lid has been removed from the box, is adapted to have secured to it a transpar ent display closure through which the men chandise in the box may be viewed. This closure usually provides the front of the box, inasmuch as it is the coinmonpractice in the use of such closures to place the box so that one of its sides is lowermost and the merchandise is more satisfactorily viewed by customers in stores. The display box front shown in the drawings comprises a lower section B and an upper section C, the upper section being hinged to the lower sec tion so that it may be opened and closed while the lower section is held in a fixed position at the open front of the box A by my fasteners.
1 designates the main member of my box front fastener, two of the fasteners being utilized upon each box with which they are used. This main member is made of wire and is offset at 2 from the front end of the body of the member to provide an eye portion 3 extending at an angle from said body and terminating in an eye 4 through which a screw 5, or other suitable securing means, may be inserted and entered into the lower member of the display front to attach the fastener thereto. The object in offsetting the eye of the fastener from the body of the fastener is to permit the application of the Specification of Letters Patent.

display front to a box, in the event that the box is slightly longer than the display front, or the ends of the box are bulged outwardly at the points where the fasteners are to be applied to the box and display front.
Intermediate of the ends of the main member of my fastener is a depending loop 6 that is produced by bending said main member into the shape seen in the drawings, the loop being preferably of approximately U- shape and lying against the end of the box.
7 is a draw spring, the ends of which are attached to the elbows of the loop 6 at the junctions of said arms and the front and rear portions of the main member of the fastener, the function of this spring being that of holding the arms of the loop 6 drawn toward each other and acting to draw said arms toward each other after the loop has been expanded by stretching the fastener when a pull is exerted longitudinally thereof. The rear portion of the main member of the fastener terminates in a laterally extending hook 8, preferably arranged at a right angle to the loop 6 and which is flattened to provide a sharp tooth 9 adapted to enter into the back wall of the box A, with the result of causing the rear end of the fastener to maintain its proper position after it has been put in place to perform its duty.
10 is a finger piece upon the rear portion of the main member 1.
In the practical use of my display front fastener, the fasteners are first attached to the display front having been applied to the box for which it is to serve as a closure, the person applying the display front grasps the finger pieces 10, and by exerting pull thereon causes the draw spring 7 to be expanded and the hooks 8 to be moved rearwardly to a sufficient degree to permit their passage back of the box. Then upon release of the finger pieces, the draw springs act to contract the fasteners, with the result of causing the sharp edges of the hooks 8 to become embedded in the back of the box to hold the fasteners in place.
I prefer to make the main members of my fastener of spring wire so that the loops 6 therein are resilient ones, and, therefore, act to contract said main members independently of the action of the draw springs applied to the loops, or assist in the contraction of said members.
I claim 1. A box front fastener, comprising a main member attachable at one end to a box front, and provided at its opposite end with a hook for engaging the back of a box, the
said member being provided with a U-shaped 5 loop and elbows located intermediate of its ends, and a draw spring connecting the elbows of said loop. 7
2. A box ,front fastener, comprising a main member of spring wire attachable at 30 one end to a box front and provided atits opposite end with a hook for engaging the back of a box, the said member being provided with a U-shaped loop and elbows located intermediate of its ends, said hook being provided with a sharp tooth adapted to become embedded in the back of the box.
