Letters .Patent No. 98,355, dated December 28, 1869.

IMPROVEMENT IN STUMP-EXTRACTORS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, (LW. DAWSON, of Paynesville, in the county of Pike, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefull` Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of' this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a stump-extractor, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which represent a perspective view of my machine.

A, B, and C represent three beams,joined together inthe peculiar manner shown in the drawings, forming a frame, supported by two wheels D D, mounted upon an axle, E, which is secured to all three beams, near the point where they are joined together.

Upon each of the bars A B C is an inclined standard, G, which three standards are joined together at their upper ends, and held by means of a metal cap,

The cap H is so -shaped as to form two ears a a,

between which is a bar, b, lrounded on its upper side, to form a bearing for the lever LI, placed upon the saine, said lever being, on its' under side, provided with almeial bar, d, or plate, having a semicircnlar recess, in which the bar b fits.

and is, at its shorter end, provided with two hooks f f, with which to take hold of the stump, while the other longer end of the levers provided with rope and tackle J, passing at the end of the beam A, by means of which the lever is `turned upon its fnlcrum, the bar b and the stump pulled out of the ground.

Between the hooks fj', upon the end ofthe lever I, is another hook, e, by the use of which the stump can be hoiste'd up and loaded into a wagon, to be carried cti'. v

Having thus-fully described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Ijetters Patent, isv 1. The cap H, constructed as described, and provided wit`n ears a a and bar b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination and arrangement of the frame A B C, standards G G, cap H, lever I, hookse and ff, and 4block and tackle J, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially asvand for the purposes herein set forth.` v
