Be it known that I, THOMAS I. LUDWIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Corn-lrlusker, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corn huskers of that type adapted to be held in the palm of the hand and is more particularly an improvement upon the structure shown in my eo-pending application bearing Serial. llo. 501,625.

Qne of the objects of the invention is to provide a husking element mounted upon a combined pad and wrist strap and secured thereto in a novel manner, said securing means being in the form of a thong, a portion of which constitutes a thumb engaging element whereby the husking element may be held in proper position in the palm of the hand.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be readily reversed so as to be used either upon the right hand or the left hand, the combined wrist strap and pad being reversible and the securing thong being removable therefrom, so that, after reversing the said pad and placing the husking elementin its new position thereon, the thong can be threaded through the pad and element so as to securely fasten said element in position upon the pad.

A still further object is to provide a corn husker which is formed of the minimum number of parts, is durable and cheap to manufacture, and will not readily get out of order.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings the pre ferred forms of the invention have been shown.

In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the husker in position upon a hand, the terminal portions of the wrist strap or pad being shown, in dotted lines, extended beyond the sides of the hand. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said husker and showing the parts re-arranged for use upon the left hand. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the husking element. Fig. 4: is

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a plate which is bowed longitudinally as clearly indicated. in

Fig. 8 and is provided at one end with an inturned flange 2 while a tongue 3 extends from the other end of said plate and overhangs the adjoining portion thereof. The said plate is also bowed transversely to a slight extent adjacent the tongue 3 so as to conform with the contour of that portion of the palm adjacent the base of the thumb. A husking hook a is struck from the plate 1 adjacent the flange 2 and overhangs the said plate. Slots 5 are formed within the plate at opposite sides of the opening 6 produced by striking the hook a from the plate.

The combined pad and wrist strap used in connection with the husking element heretofore described, is preferably formed of leather or other strong and soft material and, as shown in the drawings, is substantially triangular in outline, one of the sides of the said strap being concaved as indicated at 7. A tongue 8, a heel portion: 9, and a toe portion 10 are thus formed, said tongue having transversely extending slots or ineisions 11 and 12 formed therein adjacent its free end and at an intermediate point. Another pair of slots or incisions 13 is formed within the strap at a point between the heel portion 9 and the tongue 8 and adjacent a pair of slots or incisions 14: which are interposed between the said slots 13 and one of the edges of the strap. A pair of slots or incisions 15 is formed within the toe portion of the strap and adjacent the curved edge 7 of said strap, there being two additional slots 16 located within the inner portion of the toe of said pad and preferably spaced equal distances from the slots 14.

When the plate 1 is placed upon the pad, the slots 5 and G are adapted to register with the slots 14: and the face of the tongue 3 is adapted to rest between the slots 16. A thong 17, of soft leather or the like, is then threaded successively through the slots 11, 12 and 13 and thence through the slots 14, 5, 6 and 14:, that portion of the thong between the said slots 5 and 6, extending under the flange 2 and between said flange and the base of the husking hook 4 so as to conceal the opening 6. beyond the combined pad and wrist strap so as to form a thumb receiving loop 18 after which it is threaded successively through the slots 16 and 15 and extended beyond the toe portion of the wrist strap so as to form a securing strap 19. That portion of the thong between the slot 16 extends across the plate 1 and within and between said plate and the tongues 3 so that when the thong is drawn taut, it-will tightly bind the plate upon the pad and wrist strap and hold it against displacement relative thereto. After the parts have been assembled in the manner described the thumb can be inserted into the loop 18 and the strap or pad placed about the wrist in such a position as to cause the plate 1 to be supported upon the base portion of the thumb. The tongue 8 and the toe portion 10 are wrapped about the wrist and secured tightly thereon by inserting the free end portion or strap 19 of the thong into a buckle 20 which is attached to that end of the thong projecting beyond the tongue 8.

Should it be desired to reverse the husker so as to enable it to be used upon the other hand, it is merely necessary to remove the thong from the wrist strap, reverse said wrist strap and place the plate 1 upon the opposite side thereof but in the same relation to the slots 5, 6 and 16, as has already been described. The thong can then be again threaded through the slot to fasten the plate in place and to form the thumb receiving loop.

Instead of forming the husking element of a metal plate as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the said element can be made of a single length of heavy wire bent to form an eye 21 having an elongated loop 22 formed upon one terminal thereof, the other terminal projecting into the loop, as shown at 23 and forming a husking hook 2 1. The use of this form of husking element in connection with the wrist strap or pad necessitates a slight re-arrangement of the slots. The slots 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 are arranged similarly to the slots 11, 12, 13, and 14. There are also slots 31 similar to the slots 15 and a pair of slots 32 are formed between the innermost slot 31 and one of the adjoining edges of the wrist strap.

When the husking element is to be fastened to the wrist strap, it is placed with the hook 24 and terminal portion 23 extended between the slots 29 and 30 and with the wire of the eye 21 extended between the two slots 32 and also between the two slots 31. The thong 33 is threaded through the slots 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 in the same manner as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 and passes over the terminal portion 23 and under the hook 24. This thong also forms a thumb receiv ing loop 34 and is then threaded successively through the slots 32 and 31 so as to loop over the eye 21. The said thong will thus bind the husking element tightly upon the wrist strap and hold it against displacement relative thereto.

The modified form of corn husker illustrated in Fig. 4 can be reversed in the same manner as can the husker shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

It is of course to be understood that various changes can be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A corn husking device comprising a husking element having openings, at reversible wrist strap and pad having openings, said element being adjustable to different positions on opposite faces of the pad to bring the openings in the element and pad into a predetermined relation, and a thong threaded through the openings.

2. A corn husker including a pad, a plate thereon, an inturned flange at one end of the plate, an inwardly extended tongue at the other end thereof, a husking hook outstruck from the plate and engaging the flange, there being slots within the plate and adjacent the hook, and a thong threaded through the pad and the slot in the plate and extending between said plate and its tongue and between the plate and its flange, said thong constituting means for detachably securing the plate to either face of the pad and a portion of said thong form a thumb-receiving loop outstanding from the pad.
