Description

datiert @States vCHABLESH. BERRY, 0F EAST SOMERVTLLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
- Leners Patent N 98,339, (lated December 2s, 1869.
IMPROVED SPRING-BED BOTTOM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Iatent and making part of the lame To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that L-CnARLns H. BERRY, of East Somerville,l in the count-y ot' Middlesex, and in the State ot' lilassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Bed Bottoms and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate ot' drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification -of the same, wherein I .have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent..
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in spring-bed bottoms, and consists in thc employment of elliptical springs, of a peculiar construction, for the support of longitudinal slats, and in the peculiar arrangement ofthe devices made use of for attaching and detachng thelongitudinal bars to the elliptical springs, forming, as a whole, a luxurious bottom for bedstcads and lounges, noiseless in operation, cheap, and durable ot' construction, at all times homogeneous and even of surface, and affording no'harboring place for vermin.
1n the accompanying plate ot' drawings, which illustrate my invention, and form a part of the specification thereof- Figure l1 represents a perspective view of the frame of a bed-bottom, with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 represents the elliptical spring made use of, with the plug attached.
Figure 3 is a det-ached view of the bolt forming a partof the plum The following is a description of the construction and operation ot' my invention. l
A represents t'hc side, and B, the end pieces, forming, together, a frame of such din'iensions as will cause it toiit properly within the head and foot-boards, and side-rails of the bedstead made use of.
C represents a seriesof longitudinal slats, each one of which is provided with sockets or cylindrical perforation, D, to receive the plugs attached to the series of elliptical springs E.
The said elliptical springs are `constructed of two strips of steel, constructed ot' proper form, and secured at either -end by rivets F, andare attached to the crossba-rs B by meansof bolts or screws driven through the perin'a-tion G.
The plugs-K are composed of. the bolt I, which is riveted, or secured in any other proper manner, to the upper strip of the said elliptical spring, and cylindrical Irubber piece K exactly fitting between the head L of the said bolt I, and the upper surface ofthe said elliptical spring. The said rubber cylinder is of a diameter exactly' equal to the diameter of the perforation aforesaid, cutin either end of the longitudinal reversible bars C, in order that they may tit wit-h exactncss within the same, and thus prevent the possibility of the entrance ot' vermin.
' All the perfor-ations D are uniform in diameter, as are also the cylinders K, s0 that one may be substituted for another at any time.
When the said reversible slats bec-ome sprung or bent, by constant use, it is simply necessary to turn them over, or reverse their position, so that what was formerly the upper becomes the under side, and cioe versa., so that the eveness or homogenity of the bedbottom is maintained with the greatest ease.
The manner in which the said reversible slats are arranged with the said elliptical springs causes them to give -or spring both longitudinally and transversely, without the slightest noise or disagreeable clfect.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will set forth and indicate what I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent in the the following clause, to wit:
In combination with the reversible slats c, the elliptical springs E, and plugs K, when constructed and operating as herein described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this day of i869'.
GRAS. H. BERRY.
