HAND-STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1%)11.
Application filed October 5, 1910. Serial No. 585/;294.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AsxnL Lowe and Aurelia. J. Sncnn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at ard, in the county of Cassia and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, or" which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand stamps for dating, canceling and the like, and it has for its object to produce a device of this class of simple and inexpensive construction wherein the stamping die shall be flexibly connected with a suitably constructed handle so that the said die will be firmly impressed regardless of the angle at which the handle is held.
i i ith these and other ends in view which will readily appear the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter any described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,l3igure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a hand stamp constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the stamping die detached. Fig. 3 is a detail view in side elevation of one of the members of the handle.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The handle of the improved stamp is composed of two side members 1 and 2 which may be constructed of wood or other suitable material. In the drawing, however, the handle members have been indicated as consisting of hollow shells which may be stamped, cast or otherwise formed of metal or other suitable material, said handle members being adapted to be detachably connected together by means of screws or stud bolts 3, the heads of which are countersunk in one of the handle members 2, while the other handle member 1 is provided with threaded or sockets i tor the reception of the threaded ends of the bolts.
The handle members are recessed, adjacent to their lower ends, so as to form an approximately spherical socket. which is provided at diametrically opposite sides with grooves or recesses (3. The stamp or die 7 is provided with an upwardly extending neck 8 having a terminal ball-shaped head 9 which provided with diametrically opposite lugs or extensions 10. The head 9 is adapted to be accommodated in the re cess or socket 5, and the lugs 10 will engage the grooves or recesses 6, it being, however, noted that said recesses 6 are of much greater area than the lugs 10, which latter will thus be free to move in any direction within the recesses. By this construction the die will be loosely or flexibly connected with the handle for movement in any dircction by the ball 9 engaging the socket 5, but the lugs 10 engaging the grooves or recesses G will prevent the die from rotating about its axis. Thus, when the handle is grasped for the purpose of using the stamp, the lat tor will be prevented from working around or from being reversed while in operation.
The operation and advantages of this device will be readily understood. It is obvious that, the die being flexibly connected with the handle, the latter may be deflected from a true vertical position without allecting the operation of the stamping die. It is obvious that when device of this class is used by hand, it is practically impossible to maintain the handle in a true vertical position, and the construction herein described makes allowance for such deflections of the handle as are liable to occur.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a hand stamp of the character described, a handle member andv a die member, one oi said members being equipped with an approximately spherical socket and the other member having a neck provided with an approximately spherical head engaging said socket, and one of said ball and socket members being provided with recesses of relatively large area, and the other of said ball and socket members being provided with radially disposed lugs of relatively small area operating in said recesses, whereby said ball and socket members are free for relative movement universally in all directions, and the rotary movement of the ball carrying member about the axis of the neck carrying the ball is restricted by the interengaging lugs and recesses.
2. In a device of the character described, a handle composed of hollow shells constituting side members, said handle members being recessed adjacent to their lower ends so as to form an approximately spherical socket which is provided with recesses of relatively large area in opposite sides thereof, screws connecting the handle members, said screws being threaded into one of the side members and provided with heads HUGH M. MOON, Jos. Y. HAIGHT.
