DOOR-SECURER.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patgned ,13ML 31, 1911,
Application led .Tune 16, 1910. Serial No. 567,321.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT O. HAM MOND, a citizen of the United States, resident of Rome, in thecounty of Oneida and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Door-Securers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make` and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the invention on a smaller scale showing its method of application. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the application of the invention as a screw driver. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the application of the invention as a bottle stopper remover. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the invention as applied, the door and its casing being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the invention showing its angular position in the crevice between the door and its jamb. l
The invention has relation to a combination tool, capable of use principally as a door securer, to prevent a door from being opened from the outside, and also capable of use as a bottle stopper extractor, and as a screw driver.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the tool which is adapted to be stamped from a single piece of metal in one operation of the stamping die, or to be cast in one piece, said tool being of substantially flat form and having a stem 7), provided with pointed teeth c, c, along one longitudinal edge thereof and in the same plane as the stem, for engagement with the. jamb of the door. At the opposite longitudinal edge of said stem from the teeth c, c', a right-angle shoulder bar Z is provided being designed for engagement with the inner face of the door, said shoulder bar having an extension at c, substantially parallel with the stem and joined to the inner termination of the stem by means of a curved portion f extending in the direction of the stem and to the op- ,the door,
, posite side thereof from the shoulder bar as shown at g, being then inturned at /t and Joined to the end of the stem at j, at a point beyond the shoulder bar and at the opposite end portion of the stem from the teeth c, c, the shoulder bar lying intermediately of the stem between said teeth and such joint. An open handle Zz' is this provided, whereby the tool is .more conveniently manipulated in use, the extension of the handle to t-he opposite side of the stem from the shoulder bar being for the purpose of allowing more space within the handle for the finger manipulation. The free end of the stem is made of beveled character, as shown at Z, whereby the stem is more easily inserted in the crack or crevice between the edge of the door and the jamb, and at the same time providing for the use of the device as a screw driver.
A lug m is provided at the end of the shoulder bar farthest removed from the stem, and will, in the use of the invention as a door securer, have engagement with the inner face of the door to prevent displace ment of the teeth of the tool from their seats in the jamb. This lug m, which is spaced from the stem by the length of the shoulder bar also provides for the use of the device as a bottle stopper extractor.
In the use of the invention as a door securer, the door is first closed, the tool being then inserted flatwise in the crevice between the edge of the door and the jamb with its plane in the plane of the crevice, the tool being then turned until its edge teeth engage with the jamb, the shoulder bar and the lug thereof being at the same time brought into engagement with the inner face of the door. If now it is attempted to open the door from the outside, the teeth having seats in the door j amb will prevent such opening', because of the shoulder bar bea-ring against. the door, while at the same time the lug m will become seated in the inner .face of the door to preventl any disengagement of the teeth from the jamb which might arise through turning of the instrument in the crevice.
In the application of this device to the door, the stem l) which is inserted in the crevice between the door and its jamb may assume more or less angular relation to to allow for orevices of varying width.
Having thus described my invention, what I elaiin as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent is 1. A flat-forni door seeurer Capable of being made of one piece of metal, and having a Stein provided with teeth in the plane of the ste-1n along one longitudinal edge thereof7 a right-angle shoulder bar having connection at one end thereof interinediateliT of the length of the Stein, stid shoulder han' having at its opposite end n right angle extension parallel to the Stein, and a curved bar lnwing connection at one end thereof with one end of the stein and at its opposite end with one end of said exteneion, and having projection to the Side of the stein opposite to said shoulder bar.
2. A door seonrer, having a Stein provided Wit-h teeth in the plane of the Stein along one longitudinal edge thereof, n heveled free end7 und n right angle shoulder bar having connection at one end thereof interinediattebT of the length of the Stein, said shoulder bar having at its opposite end a catch lng and a right-angle extension parnllel to Said Stein7 and L Curved har having YConnection :1t one end thereofl With one end of the stein, and at its opposite end Wit-h one end of Said extension.
In testimony whereof l afiX my Signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
