To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, Irons H. RnssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new anduseful Im provements in Ambulances; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention is an improved ambulance for use in conveying injured persons from place to place,

In the use of the'ambulance, the first injured persons are laid upon the mattresses If further accommodation is desired, a stretcher with the injured person is lifted in and one side of the stretcher is placed ii the hooked support (1 on one side of the vehicle. The supporting bars 6, e on the same side'are detached and hooked under the opposite side of the stretcher, as shown at the left in the figure of the drawing. The ambulance is preferably made of such length that the hooked supports will engage the sides of said stretcher between the ends of the stretcher and the cross bars of the same so that all endwise movement of the stretcher will be prevented.
The body of the vehicle will preferably be supported by springs and the construction of such springs and the running gear of the vehicle will be such that the body will not be raised high between the wheels.
It is to be noted that when the mattresses or beds on the bottom only are occupied, the
space above them is unoccupied and free from obstructions, until a stretcher is placed above them, and when such a stretcher has been so placed the space above the latter is also clear until a further stretcher has been placed above it. By this means I provide for the easy and ready placing of the stretchers in position and also provide for free access to such injured as may be placed in the ambulance.
The main body of the vehicle is closed by an end board of any preferred construction. If it is desired to carry persons in a sitting posture, one or two stretchers can be placed in position to serve as seats.
The supporting frame work is shown in Fig. 2 as removed from the ambulance running gear. In this condition it can be used for many purposes. At the right in this figure, I have shown the frame as supported on a flooring, while at the left it is shown as placed on the ground. When resting directly on the ground, the mattresses need not necessarily be used. They could be used if or flooring. In this way my supporting frame may be used for varioustemporary purposes, for hospital, temporary barracks and sleeping accommodations 'for tuberculosis patients and the like uses.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an ambulance, the combination with the main body, of the standards and parts connecting the upper ends of the same and a pair of mattresses on the floor of the said main body, the said standards being provided with rigid support-s for the outer side of one or more stretchers and curved bars pivoted at one end to said standards and having at the opposite end a hook to detachably engage and support the opposite sideof a stretcher.
2. In an ambulance, the combination with the main body, of the standards andparts connecting the upper ends 0f the same, apair of mattresses on the fioor of the said main body, rigid supports for the outer sides of one or more stretchers on said standards above said mattresses, pivoted hook bars for supporting 'the inner sides of said stretchers and hooks for supporting the pivoted hook bars, out of operative position.
3. In an ambulance, the combination with the main body, of standards secured.to the floor of the said main body and parts connecting the upper ends of the same, rigid supports secured to said standards for supporting the outer sides of one or more stretchers on each side of the ambulance, curved hook bars pivoted to said standards to support the inner sides of said stretchers, and hooks secured to the parts connecting the upper ends of said standards for receiving and holding the said pivoted hook bars out of operative position, said pivoted hook bars being pivoted alternately on.opposite sides of the standards.
