Description

0. H. KEEP, JR. LOCK FRONT TUBNOVER COLLAR. APPLICATION rILnp 313.28, 1910.

OLIVER H. KEEP, JIL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK-FRONT TURNOVER COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1911.
Application filed February 28, 1910. Serial No. 546.464.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER H. KEEP, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock- Iiront Turnover Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lock-front turnover collars.
In lock front turn-over collars, particularly those whose front edges are intended to be disposed closely together when on the wearer, much difficulty is experienced in but toning the locking end of the collar without soiling or bending the collar, besides which the buttoning of the locking flap or end is not easily accomplished. It has been proposed to overcome this defect and annoyance in collars of this type by providing a slot with parallel edges extending from the buttouhole of the locking flap down to the lower edge thereof, but it has been found in practice that a collar of this type readily becomes damaged when being laundried and that the expedient employed does not satisfactorily perform its office because the parts of the flap adjacent the slot leading to the buttonhole become bent and do not securely engage the collar button and the use of a buttonhole gives no latitude of adjustment of the collar to make it tighter or looser and in that respect has all of the disadvantages of an ordinary buttonhole.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a lock-front turn-over collar Whose locking flap is of novel construction, has no buttonhole, and is so formed that the collar will be securely retained, may be slightly tightened or loosened by the tension of the necktie, and can be easily secured on the shirt or removed, without danger or soiling or bending the collar, regardless of how close the front edges of the collar may be adapted to lie when the collar is closed, in addition to which, no parts are provided which will be liable to injury during laundryin The invention is carried out by the provision on a lock-front turn-over collar of a locking flap which has no buttonhole such as commonly used to engage the front collar button, and whose lower edge is provided with a cut-out or cut-away part providing a shoulder, so that the locking flap may be readily manipulated when being inserted under the fold of the other end of the collar and the cut-away edge made to engage with the neck of the collar button back of the head thereof and the shoulder by its engagement with the collar button tending to prevent separation of the collar ends and to insure security of the locking action by foreing the locking llap snugly into engagement with the other end of the collar.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a front view, the ends of the collar being broken away and their outlines shown in dotted lines, the locking l'lap being secured by the collar button; and Fig. 2, a view like Fig. l. of the collar with its ends separated.
The collar 1 is of a well-known construction. except for the improvements I have made thereon. ()ne of the collar ends or flaps 2 has the usual buttonhole 3 to be engaged with the button t carried by the shirt neckband. The other, or locking, llap 5, instead of being provided with a buttonhole to button over the collar button 4, as has heretofore been the case, has no buttonhole whatever, but is designed to be entered between the folds of the other end of the collar to form the lock joint and its securing means consists of a cut-away or cut out portion 6 in its lower edge of its neckband part, said out out portion being preferably provided with one or more inclined shoulders 7 and 8, the lower edge 9 gradually sloping to the. usual lower edge of the neckband part of the collar. The cut-away 6 is of such size that it will permit a slight loosening or tightening of the collar, according to the requirements of the wearer, by adjustment of the necktie.
When the collar is placed around the shirt. neckband, it is first buttoned at the back and then the flap 9 is buttoned by fastening the buttonhole 3 over the collar button l. The lock flap or tongue 5 may now be easily inserted in the other end of the collar and. readily nninipulated to dispose the cut-away 6 so that it will receive the collar button 4t and the shoulders 7 and S will be disposed in engagement with the shank of the collar button, back of the head thereof. The inclination of the shoulders 7 and 8 tends to wedge the flap 5 upwardly and increase the locking action so that any accidental disengagement is prevented.
My collar is essentially different from others previously known to the art in that the locking flap has no buttonhole nor any modifieation thereof, the retention of the flap being effected by the shape of the lower edge of the flap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A look front turn-over collar having a buttonhole in one of its fastening ends and its other or looking end provided with a shouldered cut-away in its lower edge, said cutaway being substantially parallel with the upper edge of the collar whereby longitudinal adjustment of the collar is permitted, and located at substantially the same distance from said upper edge as the buttonhole is spaced from said upper edge, said shoulder extending downward from said cut-away.
In testimony wherof, I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER H. KEEP, JR. Vitnesses J OHN H. SAMUELSEN, JOHN J. COSTELLO.
