JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, 0F WESTMONT, NEW JERSEY.
FUNNEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24:, 1911.
Application filed December 23, 1909. Serial No. 534,597.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vestmont, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Funnels, of which the following is a specific.- tion.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in funnels, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character whereby the us r thereof may be notified when a vessel has been filled, thus preventing the over flow of liquid.
The device is adapted for use in filling opaque vessels, and especially lamps, the bodies of which are formed of metal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a funnel with a straight or flat side so that the same may be placed in the liquid inlet of a lamp without the burner interfering therewith.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A Figure 1, is a top plan view of my improved funnel, Fig. 2, is a vertical section showing the funnel as it appears when in u v 1 I I normal positlon, and Fig. 3, 1s a vertical lug F mounted on its lower end and forming a slidable support for a float L. Mounted upon said float is a signal rod J preferably having an enlargement K on its upper end. To the lower end of the rod J is secured the float L, which may be of any suitable material such as cork.
From this description it will be seen that when the funnel is placed in the liquid inlet opening of a lamp, the flat side is turned toward the burner, allowing the funnel to take its position without interference with said burner. The liquid is then poured into the body A, passing through the tube D, into the body of the lamp, and as the liquid reaches the float L it will cause it to gradually rise until it reaches a position near the top of the tube, at which time the top of the rod J will extend above the top of the body A, showing that the lamp or other vessel is full or nearly so, thus notifying the attendant that no more liquid should be placed therein.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
An indicating funnel comprising a body having a flat side and a circular flared side a neck integrally formed therewith, a crosspiecc mounted in said funnel above its neck, a depending rod permanently supported from said cross piece, an enlargement on the lower end of said rod, a bored float fitting on said rod and vertically slidable thereon, an indicating rod rigidly secured to said float and extending upwardly, said neck being of customarily slight length whereby said float is under ordinary circumstances below said neck.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto atlixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS.
