Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY M. HART, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Shutter-Holder; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, attention being' called to the drawing which accompanies this application and forms a part thereof.

The subject of this invention concerns a device whereby a pair of window-shutters may be maintained in a partly open position and in which they are firmly held against movement in either direction.

In the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end thereof, will be found a full description of my invention, together with its manner of use, parts and construction, which latter is also illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, shows my device used in connection with a pair of shutters which appear in horizontal section. Fig. 2, is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, shows a modiiied construction of my device.

In the drawing, 5-5 indicates a pair of shutters of usual construction, hingedly supported and each provided with a customary hook 6, adapted to engage a complementary catch 7, secured to the window-sill 8. In the closed position hooks 6 engage these catches and thus hold the shutters firmly locked. Other means are provided to hold the shutters in the open position, the hinges being usually constructed accordingly.

To hold the shutters in an intermediate position as shown in Fig. l, I provide a holder consisting of loops 9-9 adapted to engage hooks 6-6 on the shutters when these latter are in a partially open position. In connection with these loops I provide means whereby they are firmly held in position with reference to each other and with reference to the permanent window-structure that is prevented from moving either out or in. They are prevented from moving outwardly by means of a tie 10 whereby they with the engaged shutters are connected to each other and prevented from moving apart, a movement which would necessarily occur if the shutters move outwardly. They are prevented from moving inwardly by one, or preferably two props 11, which extend inwardly toward the sill and are adapted to engage with their inner free ends, a shpulder or step 12 usually found on said sil A preferable method of manufacturing this device is to construct all its parts in one piece of wire and in a manner which by preference imparts some spring-action so that the device may adjust itself to small variations in distance. Loops 9-9 are formed at the turns between tie l0 and props 11-11 from where these latter extend inwardly, which arrangement imparts flexibility to the structure. Fig. 1, illustrates this feature by use of dotted lines which indicate the normal condition of the device before it has been adjusted by compression to meet the distance between shoulder 12 and shutter-hooks 6-6. The ends of the props are curled as shown at 13 to prevent them from digging into the wood and to enable them to slide freely over the same in adjustment.

The modified form illustrated in Fig. 3 provides means to accommodate variations in the distance between the shutter-hooks 6-6, this being done by provision of an additional loop.

The device may be readily taken oli' from hooks 6 6 when not needed, after which the shutters may be moved as usual to be either entirely open or entirely closed.

Having described my invention, I cla-im as new: y

1. A one-piece shutter-holder of the kind described, combining means for connecting two shutters to each other with a space between them, with means for holding the spaced shutters spaced from the permanent parts of the window-structure.

2. A holder for the purpose of maintaining shutters provided with locking-means in a partly openv position and consisting of loops adapted to engage these locking means on the shutters, of a tie whereby these loops are connected to each other and of proppin means extending from these loops an adapted to engage a permanent part of the window-structure.

3. A holder for the purpose of maintaining shutters in a partly open position, shaped of a piece of Spring Wire n a manner to form shutter-engaging loops, a tie 5 between Jthese loopsand props extending from them and in an angular arrangement to the tie.
