BED-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed August 22, 1914. Serial No. 858,098.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FARAGO, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed springs, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a bed spring which can be folded longitudinally and held in folded condition when it is desired to move the spring.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bed spring made in two sections hinged together and provided with cross wires and springs for sustaining the two sections in folded condition when it is desired to move the same and also to prevent sagging of the springs at the center of the bed.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a top plan view of a bed spring made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a view looking at the hinged sections folded together and showing the cross wires and springs for holding the sections in folded condition, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the two folded sections.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the side rails of the frame of the bed bottom and 2 are the end bars of said frame. The springs 3 which may be of any suitable type are clamped at their ends between the bars 2 and a similar bar 4:, said bars 2 and 4; being secured in the rabbeted ends of the side rails 1. The bars 2 and 4: are separated centrally as at 5, in Fig. 1, and hinges 6 are connected to the bottom of the frame at the point where the members 2 and 4 abut.
Connected to the member 4 and opposite sides of the joint 5 are spiral springs 7 and wire rods 8 are connected to these springs and crossed centrally as at 9, said springs and rods being immediately below the springs 3.
When the bed bottom is folded as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the tension of the springs 7 is exerted to hold the two sections of the bed bottom closed, and when the bed bottom is open the springs 7 and wires 8 have a tendency to hold the bed bottom in that position and prevent the sagging of the bed bottom in the center.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a spring bed bottom made in accordance with this invention can be readily folded up and handled easily, will occupy less space than the ordinary spring bed bottom, and will not be liable to sag in the center owing to the position and action of the springs 7 and crossed connecting rods 8.
What is claimed is A bed spring including side rails, end bars secured to the side rails, each end bar comprising two sections, hinges connected to the inner ends of the end bar section so that said bars can be folded one upon the other or extended, coil springs secured to the adjacent ends of the end bars, and crossed rods secured to the free ends of said springs so that when said end bars are folded or extended said springs and rods tend to hold said end bars in that position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FARAGO.
