Description

F. MARAK.
ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES. APPLIUATION FILED 001.19, 1909'.

i `UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
FRANCIS MARAK, OF NATIONAL MILITARY HOME, KANSAS.
ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 18, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS MARAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at National Military Home, in the county ot' Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the 'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
My invention relates to sewing machine attachments and the object of the invention is the provision of a device which will increase the leverage whereby the machine may be more readily operated.
Heretofore, the machine treadles or pedals have been so constructed that the operators foot when applied thereto had the toe situated over the rock shaft so that small leverage could be applied to the treadle.
It is the object of this invention to avoid this ditlieulty and provide a flat extension which will increase the leverage applied to the pedal. l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2*?. of Fig. l.
Reterringmore especially to the drawings, 1 represents the rock shaft, which is secured in any suitable manner, to the sides of the machine, and upon which is mounted the pedal 2 for oscillation, as is usual. The attachment comprises a plate 3 having at one end a pair of hooks et, which are adapted to take over the upper end o't the pedal in order to secure that portion in place. The other end ofthe attachment is provided with a pair of parallel longitudinally extending slots 5, through which pass the attaching bolts (i which secure to the plate, the locking clips 7, which are adjustable in said slots 5 to adapt the device to be applied to pedals of varying' widths, and they also pro- V. vide for the adjustment of the plate 3 relatively to the pedal according to the length Patented Jan. 24, 1911. serial No. 523,155.
of the hooks 4 which may be ot' any desired lengtl'i. These clips are pivoted upon the bolts in such a manner that they may be turned in one direction to engage the attachment with the pedal and loclr it in position thereon and in the other direction to release the attachment from the pedal. The attachment is also provided with a pair of parallel longitudinally extending slots intermediately ot' the ends of the plate through which suitable attaching bolts may be passed for connection with the pedal and which assist in securing the attachment while permitting its adjustment on the pedal. The bolts (i carry a suitable heel piece 9 preferably formed on a double curve to receive and separate both heels ot' the user of the machine and to limit their rearward movement. This device is raised from the plate at the apex of the curves and rests upon the plate intermediate the same.
.From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. An attachment for varying the width of sewing machine pedals comprising a plate .adapted to lie upon the pedal, means secured to said plate for holding one end of the attachment on the pedal, and adjustable means carried at the other end ot the plate for engaging the pedal.
2. An attachment for varying the width of the sewing machine pedals comprising a plate adapted to lie upon the pedal, hooks secured to said plate for holding one end o't thc attachment on the pedal, adjustable clips carried at the other end of the attachment, and a heel retaining device connected to said chps.
3. In combination with a pedal rocker shaft having a pedal thereon of an attachment therefor, comprising a plate having longitudinally spaced longitudinally extending slots arranged near opposite edges ther'emy hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- O, hooks secured to one end of sind plate to nesses.
plevent it from rsno from the pedal adjustable clips monntebd n the end slos to FRANCIS MARAK' 5 engage the pedal and a heel retaining de- Witnesses:
vice mounted 0n said plate. EUGENE FLINT In testimony whereof I have hereunto set JAMES C. MCCRAY.
