Specification of Letters Patent.
OF PENDLETON, OREGON, ASSIGNORS TO NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- AUTOMATIG CARTRIDGE-REGISTER.
Patented Jan. 24-, 1911.
Application filed September 13, 1910. Serial No. 581,325.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WARREN I-I. MAPLE and Orro F. TURNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Umat-illa and State of Oregon, have iiivented a new and useful Improvement in l'uitomatic Cartridge-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cartridge registers for magazine fire arms, the object being to provide a register which is so constructed that the same can be readily connected to any of the magazine tubes, used in magazine rifles of all kinds, whereby the number of cartridges within the magazine can be ascertained at any time.
A further object of our invention is to provide a cartridge register or indicator which is so constructed that the same can be used to indicate number of cartridges within the magazine of long or short cartridges, by simply shifting the indicating plate.
A further object of our invention is to provide a register or indicator which is exceedingly cheap and simple in construction, and one in which the parts are so arranged and connected, that all danger of the same becoming disarranged when in use is prevented.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a register or indicator which can be secured in position on an ordinary magazine tube by simply removing the head of the same and inserting our improved register therein and securing the same by a pin.
With these and other objects'in view, our invention consists in" the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rifle showing the application of our improved register. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the magazine tube. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the head. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the indicating tape.
In carrying out our improved invent-ion we employ a magazine tube A of the ordinary construction which is provided with a sliding plunger B actuated by a coiled spring C which normally holds the plunger projected partially out of one end of the tube for forcing the cartridges into the receiver of the magazine andthe other end of the tube is left openedto receive our improved invention, the above description be ing given so that the operation of our improved invention when applied to the magazine tube can be readily understood.
Our invention comprises a head D having a rounded end portion D and a stem D adapted to fit within the end of the magazine tube A and be secured by a pin E passing transversely through the same, said stem having a strip F extending centrally therefrom, which is adapted to extend within the coiled spring C, for the purpose hereinafter fully described. Arranged over the head I) is a casing G provided with a milled portion. G and a sight opening H covered by glass H, which is embedded therein flush with the outer face, which prevents water and dirt from getting within the casing, and said casing is substantially the same shape as the head, and is spaced therefrom, as clearly shown.
Secured in the plunger B, is a rod I which extends within the coiled spring and has an indicating tape J, connected to its free end, which extends alongside of the strip F, and is adapted to pass through one of the slots K formed in the stem 1) which communicates with the interior of the casing. The slots K extend longitudinally through the stem D to each side of the strip F, and the portions of the strips are cut away, and the end portions bent outwardly as shown at K, for guiding the metal indicating tape J through the slots, and when the spring is compressed, the tape will pass around the head within the casing, under the sight opening and outthrough the opposite slot, the strip F holding the tape apart, so that the same will slide freely.
The indicating tape J is provided w1th designating numerals from O to 15, upon one side for indicating the number of cartridges within the magazine tube, for instance 22 longs and upon the other side designating numerals for indicating the number of 22 shorts within the magazine tube, and it will be seen by this construction it is only necessary to remove the end of the tape from the slot, and turn the same over, in order to change the register, so that the same Wlll indicate the shorter cartridge.
Having thus fully described -our invention, What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a magazine tube having a spring actuated plunger, of a head provided with a stem arranged Within the end of said tube, said stem being provided with slots, a casing arranged oversaid head and spaced therefrom, said casing being provided with a sight opening, and an indicating tape connected to said plunger adapted to pass through said slots around said head Within said casin 2. An indicator for magazine tubes comprising a head adapted to be secured Within the end of a magazine tube, a casing arranged over said head provided With a sight opening, and an indicating tape passing through said casing over said head having one of its ends connected to the plunger of the magazine tube.
3. The combination with a magazine tube havinga spring actuated plunger, of a rod connected to said plunger, an indicating tape connected to said rod,v a head arranged within the end of said tube, a casing arranged oversaid head provided with a sight opening, said head being provided with a passage to receive the indicating tape.
l. The combination with a magazine tube having a spring actuated plunger, of a head provided with a stem arranged Within said tube, a strip secured centrally Within the end of said stem, a casing arranged over said head and spaced therefrom forming a passage, a sight opening communicating With said passage, said stem being provided With slots communicating With the passage of the head and a tape carried by the plunger of said tube having designating numerals upon opposite sides adapted to pass through said slots and passage under said sight opening.
