END GATE APPLICATION FILED 0111.38, 1910.
HANS J'. ANDERSON, OF LAKEMILLS, WISCONSIN.
END-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1911.
Application filed January 28, 1910. Serial No. 540,680.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS J. Annnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lakemills, in the county of Jefferson and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in End- Gates, of which the following is a descript on, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this speeificatlon.
This invention has for its ob ect to provide an end gate for wagon bodles which will be quickly and easily locked In place and will then serve to rigidly clamp the sides of the wagon body against spread ng. With the above and other objects in wow, which will be apparent from the following description, the invention consists of the end a gate as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of an end gate constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar View with the clamping lever thrown to its open position and clamped there and the end gate swung partly open; Fig. 1 is a side view of the rear end of the wagon body showing the wagon box strap forming the pivotal connection for the clamping lever; and, Flg. 5 is a sectional View through the end gate looking toward its fulcrum cleat.
In these drawings 10 indicates the bottom of a wagon body and 11 are the sides thereof, there being the usual cross piece 12 beneath the rear end of the bottom 10 and projecting beyond the sides. The box straps 13 and 14 are bolted to the sides as usual and pass through openings in'the cross piece 12 where they have nuts 15 threaded on their lower ends for tightly clamping the bottom to the sides of the body.
Some of the bolts 16 connecting the box strap 13 to the side of the wagon body also pass through a flanged plate 17 and a flanged cleat 18 which are thus secured to the inner surface of the rear edge of one ,of the sides of the wagon box, the flange of the said cleat and the flange of the plate 17 forming between them a groove or slot in which one end of an end gate 19 may be seated. This end of the end gate is provided with a flanged strip 20 which forms a hook-like pivotal engagement with the recess or groove formed between the flange of the oleat 18 and the body portion of plate 17, by means of which engagement the end gate may be swung into its closed position where its end will fit between the cleat 18 and the flange of plate 17 as shown in Fig. 2. The flanged strip 20 is preferably secured on the end of the end gate by means of bolts 21, one of which passes through the 'end of a tie strap 22 extending across the rear face of the end gate toward the other end thereof and fitting within a socket 23 formed therefor in the flanged. strip 20. The other end of the tie strap 22. is fastened to the end gate by a bolt 24 having its threaded end projecting beyond the clamping nut 25 which holds said tie. strap in place, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The box strap 14: on the other side of the wagon body has a pair of ears 26 formed thereon between which a lever 27 is fulcrumed, said lever being so bent as to form a shoulder 28 which is adapted to engage with an angle strip 29 secured to this end of the end gate and by means of such engagement force the end gate into its closed position against the flange of a flanged plate 30 secured to the side of the wagon body, similar to flanged plate 17 on the other side. When the clamping lever 27 completes its operation of forcing the end gate into its closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, a slot in the end thereof passes over the projecting end of bolt 21 so that a winged nut 31 may be threaded on the end of the bolt to hold the lever in this position and thereby lock the end gate in place. The clamping lever 27 not only serves the purpose of forcing the end gate home, into its position in bearing against the flanges of the plates 17 and 30, but its shoulder furthermore serves to firmly clamp the flange strip 29 of the end gate against the plate 30 on the side of the wagon body, the box strap 1 1 and the clamping lever 27 thus forming a vise for firmly clamping the side of the wagon body to the flanged strip on the end of the end gate. Should there be a tendency for either side of the wagon body to spread outwardly under the weight of the load, or for any other reason, the engagement of the shoulder of the clamping lever 27 with the angle stri 29 on the end gate will serve to draw sai side of the wagon body into its upright position where it will be clamped or tied to the other side of the wagon body with a metallic connection, dispensing entirely with the necessity for the use of a wagon box rod.
This metallic connection is from the box: strap 14: throughtheplampinglever 27 and the bolt/12% to the tie strap 22 and then thraigh its connection with the angle strip 20 and the connection between the flange of said-stripand the flange of the cleat 18 and through the bolt connections 16 of said cleat to the other box strap 13. This metallic tie connection from one side to the other serves to'firmly hold the wagon box in shape.
In order that the end gate may be guided into its proper position on entering the i flange of strip 20 into engagement with the flange of cleat 18 a guide lug 32 is formed on said strip 20, and fits within a corre sponding notch 33 formed in the flange of cleat 18, andin order that this engagement between the flanged strip 20 of the endgate and the flange of the cleat 18 may not be obstructed by dirt on the bottom of the wagon box, said flanges terminate at a suflicient distance above the bottom of the wagon j box as shown in Fig. 5.
For closing the end gate it is only neces sary to engage the flange of strip 20 with the flange of cleat 18, as shown in Fig. 3,
and then push it inwardly and swing the I clamping lever 27 thereagainst to the posiii? sary to turn the winged nut 31 off of the bolt 24 and swing the clamping lever, when the end gate may be swung out and then detached, the clamping lever being preferably swung to the position shown in Fig. 8 where 3 it may be clamped out of the way by having construction comprising a flanged cleat, a
The winged nut will thus be asiotf therein pass a projecting threaded if flanged plate, bolts passing through thebox strap at one side of the wagon body. and through said side of the wagon body and'the flanged plate and the flanged cleat for clamping them together, an end gate,;.a flanged strip on one end. of the end gate adapted to form a detachable hook engagement with the flange of the cleat, a tiestrap secured to the flanged strip and extending along the end gate toward the otherend thereof, a flanged plate at the other side of the wagon body against the flange of which the end gate bears when in its closed position, an angle strip on the end of, the end gate, a shouldered clamping lever pivotally mounted on the box strap at said other. side 7 of the wagon body and adapted to engage its shoulder with the angle strip for forcing the end gate to its closed position .and for clamping the angle strip to the side of the wagon body, and a bolt passing through the 1 end gate and the tie strap and havinga winged nut for engaging the clamping lever.
In testimony whereof, I afflx my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
