POCKET FOR PLUMB-BOIBS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I). CATER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Yorktown, in the county of York and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pockets for Plumb-Bobs of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pockets for plumb-bobs, and has for an object to provide a pocket which is constructed whereby it may be attached to the leg of a tripod of a measuring instrument and which may be positioned on the leg so as to receive the plumb-bob when the latter is not in use, the said pocket thus serving to prevent dangling of the plumb-bob and to prevent its becoming tangled with portions of the tripod when the latter is moved from place to place.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a tripod leg showing my improved pocket applied thereto. F 2 is a horizontal section through the pocket. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the reinforcing wire. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which. the pocket is formed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the companion blank from which the pocket is formed.
My improved pocket consists of a layer of material 1 which conforms substantially in configuration to an ordinary plumb-bob and when used in connection with the companion layer of material 2 a pocket of approved construction is formed. A s ring reinforcing member is employed anc as shown, it consists of a single length of wire which is bent to form spring side portions 8 and similar top portions 4:, the said top portions being formed to provide an eye 5 and the said side portions 3 being formed at their lower ends to provide an eye 6. The layer of material 2 is formed at its upper end to provide a flap 7 in which is formed an eye 8. The

is adapted to aline with the eye 8 when the flap 7 is folded as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The layer 2 is formed at its lower portion to form an eye 10 which is adapted to aline with the eye 6 and with the eye 11, which latter is formed in the layer 1.
The spring member herein described is interposed between the layers 1 and 2 forming the pocket and is secured therebetween by lines of stitching, as shown. The flap 7 is folded over to house the portions 4 of the spring member as fully illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The eyes formed in the pocket receive fastening screws or similar retaining devices which are engaged with the leg A of the tripod. Incident to the provision of the eyes 5 and 6 in the said spring reinforcing member the eyes which are formed in the layers 1 and 2 of the pocket are greatly reinforced and the said layers are effectively held against becoming torn incident to the weight of the plumbbob when the latter is postioned in the pocket. The reinforcing sprin member is of a construction that it normally holds the layers 1 and 2 of the pocket approximately closed against each other. By exerting slight pressure on the side portions 3 of the said spring reinforcing member the layers 1 and 2 of the pocket may be moved away from each other to permit the insertion of the plumb-bob. It may be further explained that incident to the elasticity of the spring member a certain spring gripping action will be exerted against the plumbbob to hold it against becoming accidentally moved out of its pocket. The layers 1 and 2 forming my improved pocket are of leather preferably but it will be understood that any desired material may be employed.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a pocket for plumb bobs comprising companion layers of material, a reinforcing member of a single length of spring wire interposed between the said layers of material and secured thereto at their edge portions and conforming substantially in configuration with the shape of such layers of material and formed at one end to provide an eye and at I to facilitate the engagement of the article its opposite end to provide a similar eye, in the pocket.
