PETER DEVLIN, 0F BALTIMORE, ZMARYLAND UIU'QTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WINDO'W-SH UTTER HOLDER.
e To all irlmm it may-concern: g
lle itlrnown that T, Pc'rrn Dorms, a citizen of the Un ted States, residing at ho. 1311 East Biddle street, city of Italtnnore.
- State of Maryland. have invented a new and Improved Shutter l 'lolder of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to new and useful 5 improvements in shutter holdingdevices. I and more -.articularl to that class in which the shutters are adapted to be held in an desire l-po.-ition or angle with respect to the window frame to which they are applied. Another object. of this invention the: provision at :1 hi nge. whereby the windows i may be very readily opened or shut without any unnecessary exertion by the person (10- i siring to open the same. i it further object of this invention is to i improve and simplify devices of this charactor, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and etiicient in use, and readily operated.
'ith the above and other objects in View this invention resides in the novel fcatnr of construction, formations, comhinatic and arrangements of parts to be hcreinatiei more particularir -clc.-'c1'ibcd. claimed andg illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in i wnich- Figure l is a horizontal sectional i'iewi taken through a window frame having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspect-ivc View of my improvement detached; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the. segmental plate, and Fig. at is a detail perspective view of the i rack. 5 Referring to the drawingsby charactersl of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally a window frame, upon the inner sides or edges of which are secured hinges 2. These hinges 2 comprise the customary leaves 3, connected at their adjacent edges by means of the customary vertically sic-t tending pintles 4-, to the lower ends of which i are secured in any desired manner segments 5, the straight edges of which are secured to the lower edges of the leaves 3 to which the shutters G are secured. The outer or curved edges of the segments are provided with vertically arranged notches '7, for the reception of the lower reduced terminal of 5 vertically movable racks S secured in suitable guidcs 9 to the rear of the lea cos 3, which are secured to the inner edges of the said window frame.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application flied May 11 1910.
Patented Jan. 2t, 1911. Serial No. 560,762.
' Teeth t] are formed upon the rear of the previously mentioned racks S for the eneagcu'ient. with segmental puuons 10 keyed to the outer ends of horizontally disposed shafts 11, to the inner ends of which are re cured operating cranks 12 PLOTldECl attheir 1 free ends with thumb screws 13 adapted to engage one or more of the spaced apertures 1-1:, located in plates 15 secured to the inner face of the window frame.
The operation of the device is as follows: When a person desires to open or close the' shutters, or. retain the same in any desired angle or position with respect to the win dow ,frame obviously upon the turning of the thumb screws, the inner ends of the same which lie in ciigagement with one pair of the apertures 14, said inner ends will be fro:
from the said apertures thus permitting a free swinging of the operating cranks 12,
manites'rlyraising the racks secured to the rear face of the leaves through the xnediun'i of the previously mentioned segmental pinions and removing the reduced lower ends of the said racks out of engagement with the vertical'opcnine" formed in the segments,
- which are carried by the. lower end of the shutter supporting Icarus and the pinties l'roni the foregoing it will be 10 1(lll} ap- 1 parent that the shnttcrsmav then be swung to any desired position and retained therein by lowering the racks again into engagement. with the nearest: apertures, and again seating the thumb screws into the apertures formed into the curved plate for the pur pose of retaining the slmtters againstdisplacelrent.
Having thus fully described this invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a hinge of a segment secured to one leaf thereof, a rack secured to the opposite leaf thereof, for engagement with said segment, and means for movin; said rack into and out of engagement: with the segment, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a device such as described of a hinge, a segment secured to one leai thereof, a rack secured to the opposite leaf of the said hinge for engagement with the segment, a segmental pinion engaging the said rack, and meansfor 0peratingthe segmental pinion for the purpose of moving the said rack into and out of engagement wth the said'segment.
01", u rauk secured to the opposite leaf there The u'nnbination will: a hinge of a: hinge, and means for locking the rack into srgmnnt secured to 1110 oppos1te. 1on1" Therm and out of engagement with the said sug- 10 uc-nt.
01 and adapted to engage the segment,
PETER DEVLIX. adnpu-(l in operate the segmental pinion and i Witnesses:
11mm 1110 rack into and outof engugement J. IIARRY Smm', will the segment secured to one leaf out the i AUGUST SCHMIDT.
