To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. NORTH, I a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to milk-cans and is directed to the provision of a can or con tainer for milk constructed in a novel manner and adapted particularly for use in receiving and transporting milk in accordance with a new plan involving conditions which are far more sanitary than those now prevailing.

Theinvention involves the provision of a milk-can having a cover which is secured in place upon the can, the securing means for the cover having two essential characteris tics: first, that it permits removal of the cover only by the persons authorized to do so, and second, that it permits of a limited amount of movement of the cover upon the can in order to close or uncover an opening for milking directly into the can.

In the collection and transportation of the milk supply for a large city, the common practice of the farmers is to milk into a pail, then to pour the milk into a can and to ship the milk in this can. This practice involves the use of two containers in Which the milk is placed, the cleaning of both of which is left entirely to the farmer, and furthermore it involves milking into a container the opening in which is in a horizontal plane and is of substantial area.

My invention involves the provision of a can having a cover secured thereon in such a way that it can only be removed by breaking or mutilating a part of the securing means, such as will show thereafter that the cover has been removed. The purpose of securing the cover upon the can in this way is to guard against the opening of the can except by the person or persons who are authorized to clean the cans, the securing means serving to insure that the can will not be opened by the farmer while the cans are in his possession.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the securing means consists of one or more straps passing through handles on the can and the cover therefor, the ends of these straps being united by a destructible seal, though other forms of securing means may be employed if desired. These straps are so arranged as to permit of a limited amount of movement of the cover upon the can, such as will close or uncover an opening in the portion of the can over which the cover fits. With cans so constructed, it is possible to maintain local stations in farm ing districts Where all the cans to be used in that district may be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized in a plant specially constructed for this purpose. The cans may then have their covers secured thereon by means of the destructible seals, and in this condi tion be delivered to the farmers in the district for filling by them. The cans being thus maintained closed after being cleaned and sterilized, it is impossible for foreign substances to get into the cans from the time they are cleaned up to the time of their use.

When it is desired to use a can, the cover thereof is moved to such extent as is per mitted by the securing means therefor, so as to uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can and permitting of milking directly into the can. This opening is preferably in a wall which is substantially perpendicular to the bottom Wall of the can, so that when the opening is uncovered for milking there is but a small area, measured with reference to a horizontal plane, through which particles may drop into the interior of the can. The can having been filled, the cover is turned to its original position to close the opening, and the can full of milk is returned to the local station for transportation to the city. In this way but one container for the milk is used, and the cleaning of this container is taken from the hands of the farmer entirely and is intrusted to persons whose special duty it is and who have special apparatus for the purpose.

A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved milk-can and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the cover of the can.

Referring to these drawings, 1 indicates a metallic milk-can of cylindrical form, having a neck 2 at the upper end thereof, which is of smaller cross-sectional area than the body of the can. This neck receives a cylindrical metallic cover 3, which is adapted to turn upon the neck 2. In the neck 2 and in the cylindrical wall of the cover 3 are openings, preferably of circular form, such that when the opening in the cover 3 is brought over the opening in the neck 2, an opening is provided leading to the interior of the can for milking directly into the can. The can is provided with handles 4t and on the cover 3 is a handle 5. A strap passed through the handles 4 and 5, and the ends of this strap are brought together and united by a lead seal 7, the latter consisting of the usual soft metal seal which may be impressed with any desired configuration or legend.

It will be seen that the strap 6 and seal 7 hold the cover 3 upon the can 1, so that the cover cannot be removed except by defacing the seal 7 in such a way as will thereafter show that the cover has been removed. Furthermore, the strap 6 permits of a limited amount of movement of the cover 3 upon the neck 2 of the can, such as will permit of bringing the openings in the cover 3 and neck 2 into alinement so as to provide an opening leading to the interior of the can, or turning the cover to such a position that this opening will be closed.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 2 1. A milk-can having a cover and means for holding the cover in place upon the can but permitting movement of the cover to close or uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can and lying in a substantially vertical plane, said means precluding movement of the cover which would uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can and lying in a substantially horizontal plane, substantially as set forth.

2. A milk-can having a cover and means for holding the cover in place upon the can but permitting movement of the cover to close or uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can to permit of milking directly into the can, said opening being located in a wall of the can which is substantially perpendicular to the bottom of the can, substantially as set forth.

5. A milk-can comprising a body and a contracted neck therefor provided with an opening in the wall thereof, and a cover fitting over and movable upon said neck, provided with an opening in the side wall thereof adapted to aline with said opening in the neck and so secured to the can as to preclude withdrawal of the cover from the can, substantially as set forth.

6. A milk-can comprising therefor, and means for securing the cover in place upon the can, which means, while precluding complete removal of the cover from the can except under predetermined conditions, will permit movement thereof to uncover an opening lying in a substantially vertical plane and leading to the interior of the can, substantially as set forth.

7. A milk-can comprising a body, a cover, and means for mounting the cover upon the body permitting movement of the cover to close or uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can and lying in a substantially vertical plane when the can is in milking position but precluding movement of the cover which would uncover an opening leading to the interior of the can and lying in a substantially horizontal plane when the can is in milking position, substantially as set forth.
