To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMEON SoHooN JAoK- soN, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Readville, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Weft-Parters for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention has relation to weft-parters for looms, for parting or severing close to the selvage of the web being woven a portion or length of weft or filling extending outward therefrom. Such weft-parters are used at present in looms in which weft-replenishment is effected automatically, for the purpose of severing the portion of weft or filling extending from the weft-end holder to the selvage, and in some instances for that of severing the portion which is left extending outward from the selvage in the case of a shuttle, bobbin, or other weft-carrier which has been expelled prior to complete exhaustion of the supply of weft or filling carried thereby.
The invention consists in a weft-parter comprising one or more fixedly mounted cut ting or parting members, one or more movably mounted cutting or parting members cooperating with the fixedly mounted member or members, a swinging carrier for the movably mounted member or members, such carrier being actuated by the stroke of the lay to open or separate the members to receive between them the portion of weft or filling to be parted, and a spring acting to move the said swinging carrier oppositely so as to close the said members together to effect the cutting or parting.
It consists, further, in a guard to prevent parting of the portion of running filling extending from the selvage of the web to the working shuttle occupying the adjacent shuttle-box.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a loom-temple having the said embodiment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking from the righthand side in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having reference to the drawings,A temple-stand is represented at 1, being the temple-bar, and 3 the expanding spiral spring which encircles the rounded part of the said temple-bar, being confined between the guide at the front end of the temple-stand, at 4, and the shoulder of the said bar at 5, the'said spring acting in well-known manner to hold the templebar and the temple-head 6 rearward, and to return them to their rearward position after they have been moved forward through the contact of the advancing lay with the temple-heel 7. The toothed templeroller is indicated at 8 in Fig. 3. At 9, Fig. 2, is a horizontal slit in the outer portion of the temple-head, adjacent the outer end of the temple roller 8, to receive, as usual, the portion of weft or filling which is to be parted and allow such portion to pass forward between the opposing cutting or parting members into position to be cut or parted.
At 10 is a blade which is fixed upon the outer end of the head 6 by means of a screw '11, and at 12, 12, are movable blades, one at one side of the blade 10 and the other at the opposite side thereof, these two blades fitting closely against the two sides of the blade 10. Blade 10 constitutes a fixedly mounted cutting or parting member, and the blades 12, 12 constitute cooperating movable cutting or parting members. The said blades 12 are attached to one arm, 18, of a three-armed lever or carrier which is mounted upon a pivotal screw or bolt 14 projecting from the outer end of the temple-head. A downturned portion 15 of the said lever or carrier constitutes a heel, to be engaged by the advancing lay for the purpose of causing the said lever or carrier to swing or turn about its pivotal support 14 in the direction to open the cutting or parting members to receive the weft or filling which is to be parted. An upwardly extending portion or arm 16 has operatively connected therewith one end of a contracting spiral spring 17 such end being engaged with a screw 18 applied to the said portion or arm, and the other end of the said spring being engaged with a resisting point constituted by a screw 19 applied to the outer end of the templehead. The tension of the said spring acts to move the lever or carrier reversely so as to close the members 12 and 10 together to effect the cutting or parting operation as the lay in retreating permits.
The fixedly mounted cutting or parting member 10 is formed in its acting portion with a downturned concavity 20 to receive 5 ing operation, the said acting portion having at the front of the said concavity, or it might be termed notch, a downwardly extending spur 21 to prevent the weft or filling from moving too far forward.
To prevent the portion of running filling which extends from the selvage of the web to the shuttle in the adjacent shuttle-box on the lay from entering between the opened cutting members when the lay heats up, and being cut or parted by the said members as they close together, a guard is provided in the shape of a downturned horn 22, Fig. 2, on the acting portion of the fixedly mounted cutting member 10, this downt-urned horn bridging the slit 9 at or near the mouth of the latter and projecting a short distance below the slit. The horn 22 is inclined downwardly and forwardly so that the portion of weft or filling extending from the selvage of the web to the weft-end holder may readily slide down behind the horn and escape forwardly past the same when the cutting members are separated so as to find its way into the concavity or notch 20, while at the same time the said horn will operate to prevent the loose portion of running filling as the latter is whipped back and forth in consequence of the to-and-fro movement of the lay, from passing into and remaining within the slit 9.
Thereby the possibility of cutting or parting the said running filling is obviated.
The specific construction of the weftparter device may be varied .in divers respects.
Preferably a loom-temple is utilized as the support of the weft-parter, for reasons well-known to those skilled in the art, but the invention is not limited in this respect.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a weft-parter for looms, of a support, a parting member fixedly mounted in connection therewith, a
cooperating parting member or members, a
swinging support for said cooperating member or members having a heel to be engaged by the lay of a loom to move the said carrier to open the members with relation to each other, and a spring which moves the said carrier oppositely to close the members together to effect the parting of the weft or filling.
2. In weft-parting devices for looms, in combination, a support, a fixedly mounted parting member having a concavity or notch in its acting portion, a stop to limit the ad- I vance of the weft or filling, a cooperating member or members, a swinging support for said cooperating member .or members having a heel to be engaged by the lay of a loom to move the said carrier to open the members with relation to each other, and a spring which moves the said carrier oppositely to close the members together to effect the parting of the weft or filling occupying the said concavity or notch.
3. In weft-parting devices for looms, in
combination, a parthaving a slit to receive and contain the portion of weft or filling to be parted, and cooperating members operating to part the said portion, one thereof provided with a horn bridging and guarding the entrance to the said slit so as to prevent the running filling from being acted upon and parted by the said members.
