\Vorcester, in the county of WVorc ster-and' State of' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loop- Cutting Mechanism for Pile-Fabric Looms, of which the following is aspecifica'tion. I
My invention relates to loop cut-ting mechanism for pile fabric looms, and more 7 particularly to improvements in mechanism for cutting the loops in the class of pile fabric looms in which needles or .;wires.are used, over which the loops are formed. Said needlesorwires extend in the direction of the length of the fabric, and the loops also extend in the direction of the length of .the
fabric.
In looms of the class referred to, as ordinarily made, there are a series of cutters, which consist of knife blades to .be removahly supported in .holders, which have rounded needle shaped ends, which extend into the loops of the fabric, and the loops are cut by knife blades,-as the woven fabric all as fully shown and described in U. S. Letters Patent, No. 758,968, dated May 3, 1904, to which refer- I do away with'the In my improvements,
" stationary knife blades or cutters, and sub-. stitute therefor sliding blades or cutters,
which are located within an opening or pocket, and have a sliding movement therein,
in the direction of the length of the fabric,
communicated thereto by a rocking or moving bar, which has an oscillating movement in a horizontal plane, and which is operated by mechanismion the loom, and which is adapted to successively move the cutting blades toward. the woven fabric, and back again, at regular intervals, to cut the loops of pile. The knife guides or blade holders,
which have been made separate from. the
pile wires over which the pile loops are formed, are in this instance detachably connected to the pile wires, and the pile loops which are formed over the pile wires are held in their extended upright position, all the wayto the cutting'knife; by this construction the knife holders are easily connected to, or disconnected from the pile 'wire, in order to remove the knife holders.

Referring to the drawings:-Figure l is a plan viewv of my improved loop cutting mechanism, combined with parts of a loom, looking in the direction of arrow a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section, on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, lookin in the direction of arrow 79, same figure, a d also shows a portion of the loom side, and the lay, not shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows, on an enlarged scale, one end of a pile wire, detached, and the knife holder detachably connected thereto, with a movable cutting blade; the dotted lines show the 5 cutting blade in its backw ard position. Fig. 4 is a top or plan View of;the parts shown in Fig. 3, looking in the direction of arrow 0, same figure, and, Fig. 5 isa bottom or lower looking in the direction of arrow 03, same figure.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the loom side or end frame, 2 is the breast beam, -3 is the breast beam plate, extending upon and attached to the upper part of the breast beam 2, on the inside thereof, and over which the pile fabric 4 passes to the takeup roll 5. v
6 is the la having a rocking motion communicated t ereto in the usual way.
7 is the reed, supported on the lay, and 8 isthe hand rail on top of the reed 7 9 is a transverse bar having suitably caror uprights 10 for the pile needles 11. The pile needles 11 extend through the dents of the reed 7 toward the breast beam plate 3, and have the free end 11, over which the loops 4 of the pile warps 4! are formed.
All of the above mentioned parts, except the construction of the pile needles 11 may be of theordinary and well knownconstruction in looms of the class referred to.
Iwillnow describe my improvements.
At the front ofthe breast beam 2, and secured at each end thereof is a bar 12, which extends transversely across the loom, and has fastened therein, in this instance by screws 13, a transverse bar 13, which, on its inner edge has a downwardly extending lip or flange 13", or projections thereon, which extend into a slot 14 in the upper edge view of the parts shown in Fig. 3,-

are preferably riveted together, as shown at 1 1", see Fig. 3.
The extended inner end of the knife holder 14 is flattened at 14", see Fig. 5, and is adapted to closely fit into a recessed portion 11 on the pile needle 11, \VlliCltllOlilS in this instance the end 14 of the knife holder 14, to form a suitable joint, and also allows the knife holder to be easily detached from the pile needle 11 without removing the pile needle.
The cutter or knife blade 15 has one end sharpened and beveled at 15, see Fig. 3
to engage with the loops 4 on the pile fab ric,'and cut them apart-as the knife 15 is moved from the position shown by dotted lines, to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 3. The sliding knife 15 has an up-- wardly extending projection 15", which is adapted to extend within the path of, and to beengaged by a rockin or moving bar 16. The bar 16 has an oscil ating movement in a horizontal plane, and is provided with two downwardly extending longitudinal ribs 16*, and 16 see Fig. 2. The rib 1.6 is of slightly curved shape, shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, and is adapted, on the oscillating movement of the bar 16 in one direction, to successively move the cutters or knife blades 15, to press the loops ion the pile fabric, and cut them apart while the other rib 16", which is ofangular-shape, shown by broken lines in Fig. 1, is adapted to reset the knives 15 again at regular intervals. The oscillating bar 16 has its ends 16 loosely carried in U shaped bearin 17 and 18 in sliding blocks 17 and 18, whlch in this instance are guided at each end of the breast beam 2 in the guide parts 19 and 20, respectively, extending outwardly from the sliding blocks 17 and 18 are arms 17 and 18 see Fig. 1, each of which has pivotally connected thereto one end of a link 21 and 22, respectively. The other ends of the links 21 and 22 are each pivotally connected to the' upper end of an arm or lever 23, and 24,
which arms have their hubs 23' and 24: loosely mounted on the transverse shaft 25; the ends of said shaft 25 are secured in bearings 26, and27, on stands 26 and 27, which are secured to the loom side. The hub 23' has an arm 23 extending down wardly therefrom, see Fig. 2, which has pivotally connected thereto one end of a connector or rod 28; the other end of the connector 28 is connected to some operating mechanism on the loom, not shown, which imparts a rocking movement to the upright lever 23. A second lever 24 is operated by mechanism on the loom, not shown, in a similar way, thus impartin to both levers 23' and 24, an alternate roc (ing movement, to communicate a rocking or oscillating movement in a horizontal plane to'the bar 16, and sliding knives 15, at regular intervals. It will be understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure .by Letters Patent is 1. In loop: cutting mechanism for pile fabric looms, blades or cutters having a sliding movement in the direction of the length of the fabric, and suitably'supported and guided, and means, comprising a bar having a rockin or oscillating movement in a horizontal p ane, and means for moving said bar, to communicate a sliding movement to said blades or cutters, to successively move them toward thewoven fabric, tocut the loops of pile, and move them back'again at regular intervals.
2. In loop cutting mechanism for pile fabric looms, blades or cutters, holders therefor, said holders detachably connected to the pile wires, and'said pile wires, said blades or cutters having a sliding movement inthe direction. of the length of the fabric, and means, comprising a bar having a rocking or oscillating movement-in a horizontal plane, to communicate a sliding movement to said blades or cutters, to successivelymove them toward the woven fabric, tocut the loops of pile, and move them back again at regular intervals. 1
