Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 24, 1909.

Be it known that I, FRANK Vnnns, a citizen of the United States, resident of Russellville, in the county of Logan and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Foundations for Buildings in Earthquake Localities; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention showing the framework of the structure. Fig. 2 is a front view of the invention with parts in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. A is a section on the line A 1, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view with parts broken away showing a modification.
The invention relates to foundations for buildings in earthquake localities, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates a shaft which is sunk to the bedrock b, or piles a, may be driven to form the bottom of said shaft when bedrock is not easily reached owing to the unstable nature of the ground, a smooth cement covering g being laid over the piles, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Fitting in the shaft a, and resting upon the smooth bottom a, thereof, is a pillar or upright column 0, preferably of iron or steel and having a slight taper or gradually decreasing in size from top to bottom. This pillar or column is of less size in cross-section than the shaft wherein it fits, a little oil being placed in the bottom of the shaft for lubricating purposes. A number of the shafts are sunk and pillars or columns placed therein as are required for the building to be erected, each pillar having prefcrably a vertical pin d, at its upper end, which engages the horizontal sill f, also preferably of iron or steel, and connecting and resting upon the pillars. The frame work of the building shown at g, is erected upon the horizontal sills f, f, diagonal cross braces A, ll, being provided to form a rigid structure.
A platform support 2', is provided for the chimney i, built thereupon, said platform having supporting pillars or columns y, j, fitting also in a shaft a, and resting upon the bottom thereof. A center platform is, is provided for each square or section of the structure, said platform carrying a center post 70, of hollow character, with which the diagonal brace rods have connection by. means of adjustable nuts Z, Z, engaging threaded ends of said rods and the opposite ends of the brace rods having hook connection m, with eyes of the pillars or columns 0, c, and the corner posts m. This platform 71:, also has supporting pillars k 70 resting upon the bottom of a shaft a.
In time of earthquake, the movement of the earth in which the shafts a, a, are located, takes place without injury to the columns or supports (Z, d, which slide upon the smooth bottoms of the shafts, and the rigid structure of the building resting upon said columns being preserved from injury.
If desired the bottom of each shaft may be slightly dished as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings to retain the pillar or column thereof normally in the center. Towers, porches, bay windows, etc., may be provided for as will readily be apparent.
It is advisable in order to render the structure rigid that from two to four strong braces be provided under each floor or room running parallel with the floor joists and made fast to the sills.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a foundation for buildings, the combination with a hard bed having a smooth upper bearing surface, of a rigid foundation frame comprising corner pillars, horizontal stringers connecting the same, and a center post having diagonal brace connections with the corner pillars and having also a supporting pillar, said corner pillars and the supporting pillar for the center post having sl'idable supporting engagement with the bearing surface of said bed.
