ANDREW J. MACKEY, OF TELFORD, TENNESSEE.
BROOM-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Application filed September 12, 1910. Serial No. 581,542.
To all whom it may concern: 3
Be it known that I, A; nnnw J MAo'KnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Telford, in the county of lVashington and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Broom-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a broom hanger which may be fashioned at a trifling cost from a single strip of material, the construction being such that three separate places of contact between the hanger and the broom handle may be provided, whereby the broom handle will be held securely in place, and out of contact with any structure saving the broom hanger itself.
A further object of the invention is to provide a broom hanger which will act yieldingly to hold a broom handle in place within the contour of the hanger, the hanger being so constructed that it may be adjusted to accommodate different sizes of broom handles.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan; and, Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
The broom hanger forming the subject matter of this application, is preferably fashioned from a single strip of resilient material, comprising a substantially straight portion 1, bent upon itself to form eyes 2 adapted to receive securing means, the ends of the strip being bent to form two parallel coils 3, spaced apart and disposed substantially at right angles to the said straight portion 1, the ends t of the coils 3 being extended in opposite directions, and in close parallel relation, as denoted by the numeral 5, the extremities of the ends 4 terminating in eyes 6 adapted to receive securing means.
It is to be noted that the coils 3 are spaced apart from the plane defined by the substantially straight portion 1 and by the parallel ends 4:. By this construction, when a broom handle is inserted between the coils 3, the said coils will act yieldingly, to press the broom handle against the portions 1 and 1. Thus the broom handle will be held securely between the coils 3 and the portions 1 and at, the broom being in contact with the broom hanger solely, and out of contact with any support on which the broom hanger may be mounted. If desired, the broom hanger may be mounted directly upon the wall of a building; or if desired, a base 7 may be provided. Into this base 7 or to any other support which may be selected, screws 8 or other securing elements of any sort may be inserted, the securing elements being inserted through the several eyes 2 and 6. The parallel ends t of the coils 3 may be straddled by staples 9, inserted into the base 7 or into any other support on which the hanger may be mounted. These staples 9 should be spaced apart at a sufficient distance so that they will not come into contact with the handle of the broom.
It is to be noted that the several eyes 2 and 6 are located beyond the coils 3, and thus a vided.
It is to be noticed that the device is fashioned from yieldable, resilient material. Therefore, the device may be adapted to accommodate broom handles of different diameters, by removing the securing elements 8 which are mounted in the eyes 6, and by loosening the staples 9, the coils 3 being advanced transversely toward, or moved transversely from each other to the desired degree, whereupon the staples 9 may be tightened, the securing elements 8 being likewise seated again in place, in the eyes 6 in which they are mounted.
By reason of the fact that the handle of the broom is held out of contact with the base 7, or with any other support upon which the device is mounted, the broom handle is held in contact with the portions 1 and 4, and does not touch the base 7, thus, the base 7 is prevented from being worn smooth by the broom handle, a contingency tending to render the holding efiect of the coils 3, materially less, and often rendering them totally inefiicient to retain the broom handle in place.
Obviously the broom handle may be inserted between the coils with the head of the broom disposed either upwardly or downwardly; and suitable openings 10 may be made in the base 7 whereby the same may be mounted upon a fixed support.
Having thus described the invention, is claimed is A broom hanger fashioned from a single strip of resilient-material and comprising a substantially straight portion bent upon itself to form eyes to receive securing means, the ends of the strip being bent to form two arallel coils, spaced apart and disposed substantially at right angles to said straight portion, the ends of the coils being extended what broad supporting base for the coils is prov in opposite directions in close, parallel relation, and adapted to be straddled by spaced staples, the extremities of the parallel portions terminating in eyes to receive securing means; the eyes being located beyond the coils thereby to provide a relatively broad base for the support of the coils; the coils being spaced from the plane defined by the substantially straight port-ion and the paral- 10 lel portions, whereby the coils may operate to bind a broom handle yieldingly between themselves and said portions.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
