Description

N. A. SBLDIN. CONTAINER FOR OSTBIGH PLUMES. APPLIUATION .PILBD AUG. '4. 1910.
vIlatsemed J an. '10, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN A. SELDIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CONTAINER FOR OSTRICH-PLUMES.
Application leti August Il, 1910.
T 0 all who/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN A. SnLniN, a citizen ot the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of. New York, have invented a new and Improved Container' for (,)stricl1.l3lu1nes, ot which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This .invention relates to certain improvements in containers for storing, shipping and displaying ostrich plumes, and involves a support which may receive independently, a plurality ot plumes, and hold them against displacement. The support may hold the pleines in proper position in a box, or may support them while they are being displayed. The supportis pre't'erably formed o1 sect-ions, so connected togetherI that the entire support may be folded to occupy the minimum space when not in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the blanks going to make up the support, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a box, a portion thereof being broken away to show my improved support therein.
The speciiic form illustrated is adapted for use in supporting Jfour separate plumes independently of each other, and the support is made up of four blanks of the character indicated in Fig. 2. Each blank is formed of sheet 'materiah for instance, cardboard, and is out to form a body portion 10, adapted to serve as an upright or standard. Integral with the body portion is a square base portieri 11, one side of which is directly connected withthe lower edge of the body, and at the upper end of the body is a retainer, loop or peripheral wall section 12 extending laterally. Each base member has a dovetailed locking tongue 13, and on the side in alinement with the edge of the body which is opposite to the retainer 12. Along the line of demarcation between the body and t-he base, is a slot 14, adapted to receive the tongue 13 of another blank. Each loop or retainer 12 has a dovetailed tongue 15, at its outer end, and at the line of demarcation between the body and the retainer, is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 10, 191] Serial No. 575,577.
slot 16, adapted to receive the tongue 15 of another blank. The body preferably has a. flange 17 extending along the edge thereof opposite to the retainer.
In assembling the blanks to form the cornpleted article, each base member 11 is bent at right angles to its corresponding body portion, and each flange 17 is also bent atright angles. Four blanks are brought together, and the tongue 13 of each base is inserted within the slot 111 of the next adjacent base, so as to hold the four bases together. The bodies may be secured together adjacent their upper ends by any suitable means, for instance, by an eyelet 18, as shown in Fig. 1. With the parts secured together, as thus indicated, a plume may be inserted in each section or compartment between two adjacent bodies, and the base or stem of the plume may be secured to its corresponding base member in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by being bent through an eyelet 19 in the base. The plumes stand upright with their stem portion along the line of intersection of the bodies of the plumes, and the upper end of each plume is bent or curved downwardly so that the curve will come adjacent the retainers or loops 12. Each retainer or loop is then bent around its corresponding plume, and the tongue 15 of the retainer is inserted within the slot 16 of the next adjacent retainer, so as to hold all of the plumes in place. The device may then be inserted within a box or other container 20, as indicated in Fig. 3, and each plume will be supported independently of the rest, and held against any material movement.
The device may be taken out of the box and used to support the plumes independent-ly while they are 'being displayed.
The device permits each plume to be inspected independently, without handling it or without removing it from its retaining loop. Any plume may be removed independently oi any other plume, and the removal of one does not in any way aect the secure holding of the remaining plumes.
Having thus described my' invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, including a plurality of blank sections detachably secured together, each of said sections having' a body portion, a base portion and a retaining loop, each base portion being detach- Cri ably Secured to the adjacent base portion, and each retaining loop being;` detaehably Secured to the adjacent blank.
2. A device ot' the character described, inclndii'ig a plurality of blank sections detachably secured together, each of said sections haring a body portion, a base portion and a retaining loop, the retainil'ig loop ot each section being carved and connected with the next Successive .section` A device ot' the character described, coinprieing a body portion provided with a base portion integral with it and bent to an angle relatively to it, the base portion of one section beingl connected with the body portion of another section, each body portion being` provided with a loop extending to the next Section body portion.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a body portion provided with a base portion integral With it and bent to an angle relatively to it, the base portion of one Section being connected with the body portion of another sect-ion, each body portion being provided with a loop extending to the next section body portion, each body portion being further provided with a flange which engages one oi: the other body portions.
5. A device. otf the character described, comprising a plurality oi sections, each section being provided with a portion for torniing a loop, and further provided with a Slot, the loop ot one section being bent around to the next section and Secured thereto by aid ot the slot therein.
A. device ot the character described, comprising a plurality of Section5, each Section being provided with a portion for Jforining` a loop, and further provided with a slot, the loop of one Section beingl bent around to the next Section and secured thereto by aid of the Slot therein, and each section being` provided With a bent portion engaging another section for the purpose of forining ay base.
In testimony whereof I have Signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two Subscribing Witnesses.
