To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Winner H. l-loornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, county of Franklin, and State of lahissachusetts, have invented an improvement in lYindow-Loclrs, of whicn tl e foll lowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
T his invention relates to window locks of that type which are adapted to be secured to the side rail of the upper sash and are constructed to permit the lower sash to be raised or the upper sash to be lowered limited amount, that depending on the position of the window lock, but which prevents the sashes from being raised or lowered beyond the predetermined point. lVindow locks of this nature will permit the window to be opened sufficiently for ventilating purposes, but will prevent the window from being opened on the outside sufiiciently to admit a person.
The object of my invention is to provide a window lock of this type which is very simple and compact in construction and which can be manufactured cheaply,
One embodiment of the invention will first be described and the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a window having my improved lock applied thereto and showing the way in which the lock limits the opening movement of the lower sash; Fig. is an enlarged sectional view through one side of the upper window sash showing my lock thereon; Fig. 3 is a front view of the lock with the stop member thrown back into inoperative position; 4 is a section on the line a se, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my improved lock showing the way in which itis used; Fig. (3 is a section on the line yy Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 3 and l represent the upper and lower sashes, respectively, of a window.
As stated above, my lock is of the type which adapted to be secured to the side rail 5 of the upper sash and which is provided with a stop member that normally occupies a position in the path of the top rail of the lower sash at thereby limiting the opening movement of the window..
lvly improved plate 6 arranged to be secured to the side device comprises a base rail 5 of the upper sash in some suitable way, l as by means of screws 7, and a stop member l 8 pivoted to the inner edge of the base plate 6 and adapted to occupy either its operative position shown in full lines Fig. 2 wherein it is in the path of movement of the lower l sash, or its inoperative position as shown in dotted lines Figs. 2 and 5 wherein it is out of the path of movement of the lower sash. The stop member is shown as having an ear 9 through which extends a pivotal pin 10 that is carried by the two cars 11 formed on the base plate 6, said ear 9 being received between the cars 11, as clearly seen in the d 'awings. This constitutes one convenient way of pivoting the stop member to the base plate. The base plate is provided with a slot 12 of a shape to receive the inner end 13 of the stop member so that when the stop member is in operative position, said inner end occupies the slot, as shown in Fig. l.
My invention also comprchends a means for locking the stop member in its operative position, and as herein shown this locking device is in the form of one or more spring catches 14 carried by the locking member and provided attheir ends with locking lips 15 that are adapted to enter the slot 12 and engage the inner sides of the walls thereof, as clearly seen in Fig. e. The spring catches can be disengaged from the walls of the slot to permit the stop member to move into its inoperative position by simple pressure thereon, the shape of the stop member being such that this pressure can conveniently be secured by pressing on the catches with the thumb and fore finger.
I prefer to make the base plate 6, as well 1 as the stop member 8, of sheet metal which is stamped or pressed into shape and where this construction is employed, the stop member 8 will be hollow as shown and the spring catches 14: may conveniently be formed by slitting the sides of the stop member, as shown at 16.
In using the device it the side rail 5 of the upper sash in any suitable position, that depending upon the amount which it is desired to raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash, it being understood, of course, that the device will be so placed on the sash that the hinge portion will come on the inside thereof, as illustrated in the drawing. \Vhen the stop member is in its operative position, as shown in full 1 lines Figs. 2, l, 5 and (3, and is locked in will be secured to such position, it will stand in the path of movement of the lower sash and will, therefore, limit the opening movement of the sash. Whenever it is desired to open the window completely, the spring catches 1a are disengaged from the sides of the slot and the stop member is thrown back into its inoperative position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. lVhen in this position it is out of the way of the lower sash and the latter may be raised, it being understood that the base plate 8 is thin enough so as not to interfere with the free movement of the lower sash.
The fact that the inner end 13 of the stop member occupies the slot 12 when the stop member is in operative position, I regard of some importance because any pressure on the stop member due to forcing the lower sash against it will be transmitted to the wall of the slot instead of being sustained entirely by the pivotal connection between the stop member and the base. This makes the device a very strong one and one which cannot be broken or twisted in an attempt to force the lower sash upwardly.
My invention is very compact and is not only inexpensive to make but can be readily applied to the window.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a window lock, the combination with a base plate adapted to be secured to the side rail of a window sash, of a stop member pivoted to one edge of said plate, and a spring catch carried by the stop member and adapted to engage the base plate to lock the stop member in operative position in the path of movement of the lower sash.
2. In a Window lock, the combination with a slotted base plate adapted to be secured to the side rail of the upper window sash, of a stop member pivoted to one edge of said base plate and adapted to be swung about its axis into and out of said slot and to occupy said slot when in its operative position.
3. In a window lock, the combination with a slotted base, of a stop member pivoted thereto and adapted to be moved into and out of said slot and to occupy said slot when in operative position, and a spring catch cooperating with the stop member and base to lock the stop member in its operative position.
4. In a window lock, the combination with a slotted base, of a stop member pivoted thereto and when in operative position adapted to enter said slot, and a spring catch carried by the stop member and adapted to engage the wall of the slot to lock the stop member in its operative position.
5. In a window lock, the combination with a base plate adapted to be secured to the side rail of a window sash, of a cup-shaped stop member pivoted to the base plate, the side of said member being slitted to form a spring catch adapted to engage the base plate to lock the stop member in operative position in the path of movement of the lower sash.
6. In a window lock, the combination with a base plate adapted to be secured to the side rail of a window sash and having a nonyielding abutment face, of a stop member pivoted to one edge of said plate and adapted to swing away from and toward said face and when in operative position to engage said abutment face, and a spring catch carried by the stop member and adapted to engage the base plate to lock the stop member in operative position in the path of movement of the lower sash.
