I Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
Application filed August 19, 1919. Serial 1V0. 577,949.
To all whom it may cancemi Be it known that I, Ann. M. WALSTRO M,
- of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Facilitating theStartin of Hydrocarbon-Engines, 0t which the ollowingis a specification. v V
My invention relates to devices. for facilitating the starting of hydrocarbonengines and consists of means for relievingthe compression in the engine cylinders and simultaneously pruning said engine by injectingcylinders or in;
a combustible fluid into the take pipe. Y
My invention consists, generally, in combining .the compression relief and priming devices and utilizing theair released from the cylinders by converting it into a 'combustible fluid and directing it back into the engine cylinders, either directly or through the intake pipe.
My invention consists, further, of various constructions and combinations as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is aside view pf 21 four-cylinder engine with my in vcntion applied thereto. tional :view of one of the check valves shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view .of the com'binedshut-ofi valve and atomizing nozzle-also shown in Fig. 1. Fi 4 a side view of an engine similar .to t iat shown in Fig. lkbut with a modified form of my invention ap lied thereto. .Fig. 5 is a side elevation 0 another modification. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the distributing valve shown in Fig. 5. Fi 7 isla sectional view on the line Y "of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the combined priming cup and valve shown in' Fig. 5.
ig. 9 is a sectionalview illustrating myinvention applied to a single-cylinder en- Fig. 10 is a sectional view of a combined check valve, shu't-ofi' valve and priming cup.
In the drawings 2 represents an engine crank case upon which the cylinders 3 are mounted. An intake pipe 4 connects said cylinder with a" carbureter 5 having a gasolene supply pipe 6, through which a constant amount of asolene 1s maintained in,
said carbureter. check valve7 is mounted on each cylinder and has a port 8 therethrough communicating with the interior of 2 is a secsaid cylinders and adapted to be opened or closed by a 122.119. As shown in Fig.1, a tube 10 has a connectionwith each of said check valves and with an atomizing nozzle 11 that has a threaded end 12- .adapted to be screwed into a correspondingly xthreaded opening provided at any suitable point in the wall of the intake pipe 4. A port 13 extends through .said 'nozzleand a perforated valve 14 is adapted to open or close 'said port and is provided with an arm 15 that is operated from an 4 suitable pointby a rod 16. -=Ports 171 an 18 connect the port 13 witha tabelt) ithatextends to, and'communicates with, .the gasol'ene supply in the carbureter 5. The; valve 14 will normally closethe port 13 and make my invention inactive, but when'said valveis opened and the starting crank operated the compressed fluid in the cylinders will :flo'w through the check valves 7 into the tube 10 and through the .atomizing nozzle 11 where it will draw gasolene-through the .ports 17 and 1 8 to become atomized and discharged therewith into theintake pipe where it is immediately drawninto a cylinder-and consequently compressed 4 and ignited.
In Fig. 4 I-zhave shown, mounted on each ing crank is operated, the compressed fluid in the cylinders will be forced through the tube 21 into the gasolene in the lower part of the pipe'24 and thereby converted into a.
combustible fluid and discharged through the tube 26- into the engine intake pipe.
In Fig. 5 I have shown tubes 30, 31, 32 and 33 connect' each of the cylinders 34, 35, 36 and 37 .Wlth a distributing valve 38 having a perforated valve 39 adapted to simultaneously open or close the ports 40 communicating with the tubes 30, 31, 32 and 33. Balls 41 are provided in the ports 40 and adapted to open or close the ports. 42
connecting the ports 40 with a longitudinal port 43 that communicates with a carbureting device similar to that shown in Fig.4 and referred to b the same reference numer'als. Ports 44 lbad from the ports to the ports 45 and are adapted to be opened or closed by balls 46. Ports 47 and 48 connect the ports 45 with a port 49 that communicates with a tube 50 which depends into the gasolene in the pipe 24. Assuming this to be a four-cycle e 'ne and the cylinders 34, 35, 36 and 37 per orming, respectively, the com ression, working, suction and exhaust stro e of the c cle w ile the starting crank is operated an the valve 39 bein open to allow a portion of the compresse fluid in the cylinder 34 to esca e through the tube 30, port 40, ports'44 an 45, orts 47 48 and 49 and tube 50 into thelgaso ene in the pipe 24 to be converted into a combustible fluid. and discharged through the ports 43, 42 and 40, and through the tube 32 into the suction cylinder 36 to mingle with and enrich the c arge drawn in through the,engine.intake pipe and carburetor and consequently compressed and ignited to start the engine.
In Fig. 9 I have illustrated in invention applied to a single-cylinder englne 60 having an intake pipe 61 and an intake valve 62. A. check valve 63 communicates with the interior of the cylinder and is connected by a tube 64 with a combined shut-off valve and atomizin nozzle 65 that communicates with the inta e pipe 61. v
I do not wish to be confined to the construction and combinations shown and described, as my invention is capable of being modified in many ways without departing from its fundamental principle.
I claim as my invention,
1. Means for facilitating the starting of multiple-cylinder hydrocarbon engines, comprising, a compression relief device connected with each of said cylinders, means whereby the fluid released from the compressing cylinder is directed through a carbureting device into the sucking cylinder.
2.- Means for facilitatin the starting of multiple-cylinder hydrocar on engines, comprising, a compression relief device connected with each of said cylinders, means whereby the fluid. released from the compressing cylinder is directed through a car bursting device into-the intake passage of said engine.
3. Means for facilitating the starting of hydrocarbon engines, com rising, a compression relief device connecte therewith, means whereby the fluid released from the cornpressing cylinder is directed through a carbureting device into the intake passage of said engine,
4. Means for facilitating the starting of hydrocarbon engines, comprising, a compression relief device connected therewith, means whereby the fluid released from the compressing cylinder is directed through a spraying or atomizing; nozzle into the intake passage of said engine.
5. Means for facilitating the starting of hydrocarbon engines, comprising, a pressure relief valve connected with ,each .cylinder of said engine, a passage connecting each of said relief valves, means for opening or closing said passage, a carbureting device connected with said passage, a passage connecting said carbureting device with the ins take passage of said engine;
6. Means for facilitating the starting of multiple-cylinder hydrocarbon engines, comprising, a passage leading from each of said cylinders, means for simultaneously opening or inclosing said passages, 21 carbureting device connected withsaid assages, means whereby a portion of the uid being compressed in one cylinder is released and directed through one of said passages into said carburetlng device, and means whereby said released fluid 1s directed from said carbureting device through another of said passages into the cylinder in which the suction is taking place.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of August, 1910.
AXEL M. WALSTROM.
