To all'whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOSEPH Wm. LE a citizen of the United States, and resident of the cit of New York, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Priming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to im rovements in starting devices for interna combustion engines, and more particularly to that type of starting devices which is intended to be used in connection with engines upon motor vehicles, although it will be understood that it is applicable to engines used otherwise. 7
The main object of the invention is to pro-- vide a simple and inexpensive device, by the use of which a sufiicient quantity of asoline, to prime the engine, may-be intro uced into the'cylinders of the engine without the necessity of opening the hood of the motor panying drawings, in which vehicle to turn the pet-cocks of the various priming cups.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the priming device that it may be used at the same time as a means for introducing air into the intake-manifold of the engine, said air meeting the stream of combustible mixture from the. carbureter-and serving to produce a more uniform mixture. With these and other ob ects 1n v1ew,
which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is [better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrange ment and construction of parts hereinafter,
described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims, without departin from the spirit or sacrificing any of the a vantages of the invention.

In the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a pump cylinder, having a flange 11 adjacent 1ts lnner or rear end, said flange abutting against one side of the dash-board 12 of an automobile and co-operating with a sleeve 13,
for securing the said cylinder to the said dash-board. The sleeve is provided with exterior screw-threads 14, meshing with interior screw-threads 15 in the cylinder, it having furthermore a shoulder 16, that bears against a washer 18 on the operators side of t 1e dash-board. It is, of course, understood that other means may be provided forattaching the said cylinder to the dash-board,

The 0 posite or front end of the cylinder is close by a head 19, provided with a pump outlet 20. Around the said outlet is formed on the said head a screw-threaded nipple 21, which is joined, by a coupling 22, with apipe 23, leading to the intake-manifold of the internal combustion engine on' the motor vehicle. which is fastened a valve casing 25, the latter being joined by a coupling 26 with a pipe 27. This pipe leads to the main fuel supply pipe of the engine. der is mounted a piston 28 upon a piston rod 29. This piston rod extends through the sleeve 13, which constitutes the rear head of the pump cylinder, and terminates in a han- In the pump cylindle 30, the latter being disposed on the operators side of the dash-board. The piston may be of any suitable construction and material. In the case illustrated in the drawings, it consists of a plurality of alternately arranged packing disks 31 and metallic disks 32, the .latter being of smaller diameter than the packing disks. To hold these disks on the plston rod, the latter is provided with a shoulder 33, against which one of the said disks bears, the outermost metallicdisk, denoted by the numeral 32, being held in lace by a cotter pin 34, or similar fastening means. In front of the disks 32 is mounted a packing member 35, adapted to bear against the inner face of the front head 19 of the cylinder. The front end of the piston rod is screw-threaded, as shown at 36, said threads being adapted to mesh with interior threads 36 of the pump outlet 20 in the cylinder head 19.
' In the valve casing 25 is disposed a check valve 37, which is under the tension of a spring 38, said valve opening toward the pump cylinder.

The piston is then drawn rearwards until its shoulder 33 abuts against the sleeve 13, whereby liquid fuel is drawn through the pipe 27 into the pump cylinder. The piston is then moved in the opposite direction, that is to say upon its expelling stroke. The fuel in the cylinder is thus injected through the pipe 23 into the intakemanit'old, from which it is drawn into the cylinders of the engine. When the piston has reached the end of-its expelling stroke,
it is turned to screw the piston rod into the pump outlet, bringing the packing Washer 35 into proper engagement with the front head 19 of the pump cylinder. On the suction stroke of the piston the check valve 39 is held on its seat and the check valve 37 unseated. On the expelling stroke, on the other hand, the valve 37 is seated, preventing a flow of the fuel into the pipe 37, and the check valve 39 unscated. When the device is used, for priming purposes, the plug 43 ot' the cock 42 is set to closing position. Although a single operation of the primer should be sufficient under ordinary conditions, the operation now describedmay be repeated as often as desired according to the requirements.
If air is to be introduced into the intakemanifold of the engine, the plug 'of the cock 42 is set to open position, the piston 28 being held locked in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. During each suction stroke of the pistons in the cylinders of the engine, the check valve 39 is uuseated and air isdrawn through the cook 42 and pipe 23 into the manifold, where it meets the stream of combustible mixture from the carburetor, thereh producing a more uniform mixture. What I claim is In a device of the character described, thecombination with a pump cylinder having an inlet communicating with a supply of liquid hydrocarbon and an outlet-connected with the intake-manifold of an internal combustion engine, said outlet extending through the front head of said cylinder and being screw-threaded, of a piston in said cylinder, a piston rod connected with said piston having a screw-threaded "portion projecting in front'ofsaid piston and adapted to engage said screw-threaded pump outlet, thereby closing said outlet and holding said piston against accidental movement, a check valve controlling said inlet,
' a check valve controlling said outlet, and a cock-controlled passage for establishing a communication between the atmosphere and said cylinder in rear of the check valve c0ntrolling said outlet.
