IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingkpart of the same.

l To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. PEDDIE, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, 85o.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The ligure is a vertical longitudinal section of' the body of a trunk with the lid raised.

My invent-ion has for its object to improve the construction of trunks, valises, portmanteaus, pellesiers, travelling-bags, 85o., so as to adapt them toreceive and carry a portfolio in such way that while carrying it 'safely it may be conveniently removed when required for use; and

It consists in constructing the trunks, Sto., with a recess in the faces of their top or body-trays or lids, adapted to receive a portfolio, as hereinafter more fully described.

.A is the body of the trunk; B is the top or lid; C' is the body-tray, and D is the top-tray or lid; all of which parts are constructed and arranged in the ordinary manner.

1n the faceof the body-tray or lid C, and of the toptray or lid D, either or both, is formedaI recess, as Shown in the figure, of sueh'a depth and size as to receive a portfolio, AE, in such a way as not to interfere with closing the trunk.

F are elastic or other straps, which are madein two parts, the outer ends ofwhich are secured to the said trays, and the inner or adjacent ends are detachlably connected to each other with clasps, buckles, or other conveniently detachable fastenings.

The portfolio may be secured in place by pivoted but-tons, if desired.

By this arrangement, the traveller will always have his papers, envelopes, Sac., with him, and conveniently accessible, so as to be free from theannoyance of having to procure paper if he should have towrite a letter when travelling, or from the annoyance of having to unpack his trunk to get his portfolio.

This invention is applicable not only to trunks, but also to valises and al1 other baggage packages that may be provided with a body-tray or lid, and a`toptray or lid, either or both.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A trunk, provided with recessed trays C D, and straps F, the said parts being constructed, arranged, and fitted together in the manner described.
