INTERIOR DETACHAB LE FAD FOR GARIVIIEN TS.
@dil 24.
Application filed July 1, 1909. Serial No. 505,362.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VALTER T. STALL, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Interior Detachable Pads for Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to athletic garments and has for its object to provide detachable pads intended to afiord protection to certain parts of the wearers body.
The invention is especially adapted for garments which are worn in games of a relatively strenuous nature, such as football and baseball, and it is proposed to provide means whereby the pads may be secured on the interior of a garment at any desired portions thereof.
Upon the drawings which illustrate a air of breeches adapted to be worn by a f dotball player, the garment is provided with internal strips provided with eyelets to which stripsthe pads may be firmly secured by fastening devices, such as lacing cords. According to the arrangement illustrated, the pads are placed so as to afford protection to the hips, thighs and knees of the wearer.
On the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of breeches having internal detachable protecting pads. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1, illustrating means for attaching a thigh pad. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 1, showing a combination of a thigh pad and knee pad. Fig. 4: represents a section on line H of Fig. 1, showing means for attaching a hip pad.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Referring first to Fig. l, a pair ofbreeches is indicated at 10, said breeches being of the customary knee length of which the bottoms of the legs are, according to the usual custom, provided with elastic bands, not shown, for causing the leg of the garment to fit snugly about the leg of the wearer below the knee cap.
11, 11 represent pads of suitable form adapted to be attached to the hip portions of the breeches, said pads and those hereinafter described, being attached within and concealed by the breeches. A convenient method of attaching the pads 11 is by their upper edges alone as shown by Figs. 1 and Specification of Letters Patent.

4:. For this purpose a strip 13 is provided,
- here shown as attached by one or more rows of stitching 14, said stitching also serving to attach a reinforcing waist band 15. The
upper edges of the pads 11 are suitably reinforced and provided with a series of eyelets 12 adapted to receive a lacing cord, said cord being also passed through eyelets 12 with which the free edge of strip 13 is provided.
16, 16 represent pads adapted to protect the upper portions of the legs of the wearer and 17, 17 represent pads for protecting the knees. The upper and lower pads 16 and 17 of each leg may conveniently be joined by sewing separate portions of padding material into woven coverings 18, said pads bein separated by relatively narrow webs 19 a' ordin the desired flexibility and permitting the free bending of the knees. The upper and lower leg pads thus organized are preferably attached within the legs of the breeches by their side edges and for this purpose the side edges are provided with series of eyelets 20. The back and front portions of the breeches legs are provided with sufficient material to form side strips 23 extending along the interior of the side seams, the free edges of said strips being adapted to receive eyelets 20 through which lacing cords 24: may pass to attach the side edges of the leg pads.
The herein described means for detachably securing the pads in the garment permit various positions of the pads. It is desirable that the centers of the pads 17 coincide with the centers of the knee caps of the wearer, and it is essential that the pads be vertically adjustable in order to secure the proper position of the pads. It is also desirable that the webs 19 be arranged slightly above the knee caps in order that the desired degree of flexibility of the legs of the breeches be provided. It is alsodesirable to place the pads 11 in the position best calculated to aflord protection to the hip bones of the wearer and to give the greatest degree of comfort. With the herein described devices for cletachably securing the pads within the garment, the pads may be placed in various positions with relation to the wearer. It would be impossible to determine the most desirable location for the pads in assembling them in the garment for sale, because the positions of the pads with relation to the garment are not necessarily the positions which would best protectthe wearer and give the greatest degree of comfort.
As a result of providing detachable pads and the means herein described for attaching them, the wearer may provide himself with pads of any desired size or thickness, and as occasion may require, pads of one size 7 or thickness may be substituted for those of another size and thickness, and the means for a so attaching the'pads do not present any objectionable protruding portions which might cause discomfort to the wearer. The pads, being thus concealed within the breeches, do not perceptibly detract from the appearance of the garment as external pads do, and the pads may be so carefully made and attached that their presence would not be noticed at all. Moreover the pads and the means for securing the same are wholly within and covered by the fabric of the garment, the external surface of the garment being therefore continuous and presenting no protuberances or separable edges liable to be caught and torn apart.
garment and said waist band, the other edge of each strip being free, and side strips in said garment also provided with free edges, of a plurality of pads each adjustably secured at its upper edge to the free edge of one of said waistband strips, and a plurality of additional pads each adjustably secured at one edge to the free edge of one of said side strips.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
