Description

0. F. HELD. ADJUSTABLE PICTURE HANGER. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 7, 1909.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
b .71 1 VEHZLUZ larged front view of a hook for my hanger and Fig. 8 is a side View of the same.
CHARLES E. HELD, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE PICTURE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 10, 1911.
Application filed September 7, 1909. Serial No. 516,446.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. HELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a picture hanger and has for its object to provide a convenient, safe, durable and ornamental device of the kind that is readily adjustable to suspend" a framed picture at diiferent wall heights as desired.
A further object is to provide an adjustable hanger of the kind that is adapted to automatically adjust a picture to a horizontal line.
I accomplish these objects by the construction and. combination of parts, as hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of ahanger constructed in accordance with my inven tion, and shown in position to su port a picture, as shown .in dotted lines. li ig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an en of ornamental design. Fig. l is a sideview of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged rear' view of an adjustable clamp support for the hanger guys. Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. Fig. 7 is a rear view of a modified form of suspending hook, formed of the upper end portion of the main hanger'wire,',
In the drawings 1 designates the main hanger wire of a hanger constructed in accordance with my invention, and 2 an ornamental hook body, secured in any suitable and safe way to the upper end portion of the wire 1, and having a hook portion 3 adapted to engage the head of a line of picture molding 4, extending around the upper ortion of the walls of a room. The w1re'1 is of a length suitable to the height of the molding 4 from the floor, and the height above the floor of the picture zone of the walls.
On the wire 1 is adjustably mounted a supporting clamp 5, comprising an eyelet screw 6, having an'eye portion 7 adapted to receive the wire 1 freely but ,not loosely, a
by theeyes 12, the
. washer 8 having an opening adapted to receive the screw andthe inner portion of the eye 7, and a thumb nut 9, having a hub portion 10, adapted to be run in on the screw 6 and compress the washer 8 on the wire 1. The washer 8 is provided with the holes 11 one on each side of and equidistant from the wire 1, in which aresecured to the washer 'uy wires 13 of equal length, and having formed of their lower end portions the open hooks 1 1 adapted to engage eyelet screws 15 secured in the back of a picture frame.
Thus constructed, to apply the hanger and suspend a picture having a rectangular frame, with the top and bot-tom members horizontal, it is only necessary tolocate the eyes 15 in the side or end members at equal distances from the top edge of the frames, and the hook 2 of the wire 1 being first en gaged with the molding, the hooks of the guy wires are then engaged with the eyes 15. After being thus hung, the picture, if too high or too low, may be adjusted to the desired height by loosening the thumb nut 9 and raising or lowering, as required, the
clamp 5 on the wire 1, and the nut 9'being then tightened on the washer 8, the picture by gravity assumes its proper position, and
is safely suspended from the molding. So hung it may be swung sidewise, or away from the wall forthe purpose of dusting the wall behind it and when released it will automatically return to-its correct position.
Preferably the wire 1 has an upper end portion formed as a hook 2 as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, to the front of which is soldered an ornamental sheet metal stamping .of any suitable design, giving it an appearance similar to the hook shown in Figs.
1 and 3.
What I claim to be new is The within described picture hanger, comprisinga main hanger wire having a hook formed on one end portion, a clamp adjustably mounted on the hanger wire, comprising an eyelet screw having an eye adapted to receive the main han er wire, a washer mounted on the body of the eyelet screw,
and a thumb nut adapted to be run on the,
thread of the eyelet screw and compress'the washer and eyelet of the screw oppositely on the main Wire, and e pail" of guy Wires IESPQCfiYGb linked to the Washer on epposite sides of the main Wire at one end, and having means formed on their free end p0rtions for engaging holder supports of piewre frames, substantially as set forth,
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed eeee i-ri my name in the presence of? We sueseribing Witnesses, this 17th (lay of August, 1909.
