This invention relates to mop wringers of the type having a fixedk and a swinging jaw with a lever connected to the latter in a manner to operate it; and it has for an 0bject to provide an improved construction which will be inexpensive to manufacture, more eective in operation, and durable muse.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mop wringer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line a-a Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section on line b-Z) Fig. 2.
In the present embodiment of my invention I have shown a xed jaw preferably formed of sheet metal and having vertical ribs 1 provided with longitudinal drain openings or slots 3, the ribs 1 being formed by stamping and acting to strengthen the jaw horizontally7 and a roll bead 4 being formed along the upper edge to strengthen the aw vertically.
Secured to the side edges of the fixed jaw are side pieces 5 each preferably made of sheet metal with a continuous bead 6 around its edge, to strengthen it, and with a lateral flange 7 along one edge to which one of the side edges of the fixed jaw is riveted. These side pieces form the means for securing the wringer to the tub and for this purpose are each provided with a recess having a wide portion 8 to receive the vertical wall a wooden pail and a narrow portion 9 to receive a like wall of a metallic pail. Owing to the provision of the wide and the narrow portion 8 and 9 the device will swing outwardly when supported on a metallic pail if no means is provided to prevent this action, and therefore I connect the side pieces 5 by a rod 10 the lowermost surface of which lies in a plane with the upper wall of the por; tion 9 so that it may rest upon the upper edge of the pail and prevent the tilting. This rod also serves to tie the side pieces together.
The movable or swinging jaw is mounted between the side pieces and preferably com prises two side members or arms 11 made of angled iron and connected by a pivot rod 12 which projects through perforations near their lower ends and forms a pivot for the jaw. Connecting the arms 11 at their upper ends is a sheet metal plate rolled outwardly at 13 at it-s upper and lower edge, and stamped to provide vertical ribs 14 which are `arranged to enter between the ribs 1 on the xed jaw, the depressions between the ribs being provided with vertical slots or drain openings 15 which are arranged opposite the drain openings 3 of the fixed jaw. I
To prevent a mop between the jaws dropping too low, I provide a stop plate 16 which is preferably carried by the fixed jaw and is formedfrom the same sheet of metal from which the latter is made, its free edge being rolled at 17 and transverse braces 18 being arranged at its ends, which are spaced from the side pieces 5 to permit the arms 11 to swing. By mounting the bott-om on the fixed jaw instead of on the movable jaw, I not only secure a strengthening of the fixed jaw but I secure a construction which requires less labor to operate it because the weight of the movable jaw is reduced.
The means for operating the swinging or movable jaw comprises preferably a'bent or curved lever 19 mounted to swing between the side pieces 5, and positioned nearer one of said pieces than the other, the lever for this purpose having a yoke at its inner end composed of two arms 20 and 21, the former being straight and the latter being substantially Z-shaped and both being connected at one end to the lever and at the other end to a pivot rod 22 secured at its ends in side pieces 5. The yoke is connected to the swinging jaw by a U-shaped 'nember which has its free ends bent outwardly at 23 to form pivotal connections with the arms of the yoke and has its horizontal portion 24 journaled on the swinging jaw, the metal lugs or strips 15a which are cut to form drain openings 15, being alternately bent in opposite directions and wrapped about said g @sof/1o portion 24 to provide the bearings, and the end lugs or strips serving to prevent sidewise movement of the U-shaped member. lt will be noted that the arms 25 of the U- shaped member and the lower portions of the arms of the yoke act as links and form a. toggle connection between the operating lever 19 and the side pieces 5. It will be further noted by reference to Fig. 2, that the pivot rod 22 will be engaged by the links when the operating lever is thrown to open the `iaws and will act as a stop to prevent the operating lever swinging to a position where the operator will be compelled to stoop to reach it.
Briefly stated, the operation is as follows; The device is fitted to the vertical wall of a pail so that the upper edge of the latter' will rest within the recesses in the side frames and the mop is then placed between the jaws so that upon the movement of the operating lever to swing the movable `iaw the said mop will be compressed.
l claim as my invention.

In a mop wringer, a fixed jaw, a movable aw for cooperation therewith, side pieces projecting from the fixed jaw, and each having a recess provided with a wide and a narrow portion to receive the walls of pails of different thickness and a rod connect-ing said side pieces and positioned to rest upon the upper edge of a pail positioned within the narrow portions of the recesses.
2. ln a mop wringer, a fixed jaw, a movable aw for cooperation therewith, side pieces project-ing from the fixed jaw and each having a recess provided with a wide and a narrow portion to receive the walls of pails of different thickness, and a'device cooperating at a point between the side pieces with the Lipper edge of a pail arranged within the narrow portions of the recesses.
3. In a mop wringer the combination with a fixed 'jaw and a movable aw for coperation therewith, of means for operating the movable jaw comprising a lever, a yoke having its arms branched from one end of the lever and pivotally mounted at their free ends in proximity to the outer face of the movable jaw, and a U-shaped member having its arms pivotally connected to t-he arms of the yoke above their ends and having its horizontal portion pivotally connected to movable jaw.
4. In. a mop wringer, the combination with a fixed jaw, side pieces extending from the fixed jaw, and a movable jaw for cooperation with the fixed jaw, of means for operating the movable jaw comprising a lever, a yoke at one end of the lever, having a straight and a substantially Z shaped arm pivotally mounted at their free ends between their side pieces, and the arms connecting` said arms above their pivotally mounted ends to the movable jaw.
5. In a mop wringer, the combination with a fixed jaw, a pair of side pieces extending 'from the fixed jaw, and a movable jaw for cooperation with the fixed jaw, of means for operating the movable jaw comprising a lever, links mounted between the side pieces and operated by the lever, and a U- shaped member having its arms pivotally connected to the links and its horizontal portion pivotally connected to the movable jaw.
6. In a mop wringer, the combination with a fixed jaw and pair of side pieces extending from the fixed jaw, of a movable jaw for cooperation with the fixed jaw, straps struck up from the movable jaw to form drain openings therein, a U-shaped member having its horizontal portion held by the straps, links pivotally connected to the side pieces and to the arms of the U- shaped member, and a lever for operating the links.
7. In a mop wringer, a sheet met-al jaw provided with stamped vertical ribs and a roll at its top, side pieces extending from the ends of the jaw, a bottom piece projecting from the lower edge of the fixed `jaw and spaced at its ents from the side pieces; a movable jaw comprising a pair of arms made of angle iron and pivotally connected to the side pieces, and a sheet of metal formed with vertical ribs and with a roll at its top and its bottom; and means for operating the movable jaw.
