To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUIGI BnUNAcoI, a

subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to means for locking and clamping the blades of safety razors.

The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the backing member may be quickly and effectively locked to the guard member in such a. way that afiexible blade with one or more cutting edges may be clamped and held between the said members in such a way that the blade will cut properly while shaving without the liability of injuring or cutting the skin while in use.

A further object of the invention is to provide simple and eflicientmeans whereby the backing member may be entirely removed from the guard member to adapt a blade to be inserted or removed at will, and the said device so constructed that by a rotary movement of the locking member, the said backing member will effectively and rigidly hold the blade against the guard member.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view.' Fig.4 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing how the blade is clamped between the guard and the backing members. Fig. 5 is an inverted sectional plan view, showing how the locking member engages a part of the backing member; and Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of one form of blade that may be used.

The handle member 10 may be of the usual or of any preferred construction and may have a guard member 11 held thereto as by a rivet or stem portion 12, or in any desired manner. This guard member is sub stantially rectangular in form and is provided with teeth 13 at one edge and teeth 14 at the other edge thereof lengthwise of said guard member so as to form comb-like parts. In said guard member 11 are apertures 15 through which are adapted to pass the lugs or posts 16 of the backing member 17. The backing member 17 is somewhatsmaller than the guard member 11 and is substantially rectangular in form, and be tween the backing member and the guard member is held a blade 18. This blade may have two cutting edges 19 and may be provided with slots or openings, as 20, which are adapted to fit about the pins or posts 16 in such a way that the said blade may be properly held in position to be clamped between the guard member and backing member as will be presently described.

A locking member or element 21 is pivotally held on the shank of the rivet or fastening part 12. The locking member has outwardly projecting arms 22, the ends of which are formed with finger-like parts 23 which extend in opposite directions, and said finger-like parts or fingers 23 are adapted to enter slots 2 1 on the inner surface of the posts 16 at a point adjacent to the under surface of the guard member 11 when the backing member is in position. The locking member 21 has a stop or part 25 adjacent to each finger 23 to engage the solid part of the posts 16 to limit the movement of the locking member, and said finger portions 23, as well as the slots 24, may be cam-shaped or so formed that the backing member 17 wil be forced toward the guard member 18 when the locking member is moved into engagement with said posts. This locking member is'provided with a finger or handle portion 26 on opposite sides thereof, one on each arm 22, and so an ranged that the said locking member may be readily rocked or oscillated with the handle as a pivot to engage the posts and effectively lock the members together.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and efficient safety razor is provided in which a locking device or member is adapted to be readily operated to clamp and hold a flexing or other blade between the guard member and the backing member; that said locking means is simple in construction and is adapted for use in connection with various forms of safety razors; that simple means is provided for guiding the blades and holding the same in position for use; and that said device is so constructosts as well as the ed that different degrees of closeness of shaving may be secured.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent .1.'A safety razor comprising a handle, a guard member on one end thereof, a backing member provided with a projecting post having a slot therein, a locking member pivotally held to said handle and having an arm provided with means whereby said locking member may be operated, a stop on the 1 locking member for limiting the movement thereo and a cam shaped finger portion on said locking member engaging-the slot of the post whereby the backmg member may be forced toward the guard member.

2. A safety razorcomprising a handle, a guard member having openings therethrough carried by one end of the handle, a' backing member provided with posts having slots at the inner sides thereof, said posts passing through the openings in the guard member, a pivotally held locking member having oppositely extending arms provided with means whereby the locking member may be operated, and with fingers havin cam shaped ends and engaging the slots 0 the posts to force the backing member toward the guard member, and a blade having slots at its ends fitting about said posts and between said guard member and a backing member.

3. A safety razor comprising a handle, a

backing member on one end thereof, a guard member provided with teeth on the opposite ed es thereof, the teeth on one edge being difierently spaced apart from the teeth on the opposite edge, said backing member being provided with posts having slots at the inner sides thereof, and a locking member pivotally held to said handle and having oppositely extending arms and provided with cam-shaped fingers engaging the slots of the posts for locking the backing member to the guard member.
