This invention relates to improvements in safety razors and has especialreference to guard sections in razors u sing interchangeable blades, an object be1ng to provlde a guard section uickly andeaslly cleaned.

In my co-pending application Serial nurnber 95,091, I have disclosed, withan uncovered blade section, a guard section havlng outwardly and oppositely extending ard edges (see Figs. 8 and 10 in above re erred to application) and which guard edges form the terminating sides or ends of a guard section having a longitudinally extending middle body portion to assist in holding the blade and having transversel and oppositely disposed sides leading there rom to act as guard edges. These sides lead downwards from the longitudinally extending middlie body portion, then outwards, upwards and nally terminate in a direction substantially confrontmg the middle body portion.
In this invention a present purpose 1s to adapt this princple to safety razors employng blades of the so called wafer type. D
Referring now to the drawings in detall, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, a blade 4 is supported by a guard section 1, and held .1n posltlon thereto by the clamping cap 3 whlch carrles a post or stud 8 with threads thereon to engage a handle 5. The threaded post or 50 stud 8 passes through an aperture provided in the blade 4 and engages threads rovided in the handle head 10. Through t e ard section 1 is an aperture 14 through whic the handle 5 passes to engage the stud 8. On the clamping cap 3 are preferably provided 55 additional studs 12 and 12a, unthreaded, and aligned to fit in wells 13 provided in the guard section. The guard section 1 is provided with a longitudinally extending middle portion 6 from which transversely ex- 00 tend guard edges 2 and 2a in outwardly and lopposite directions. The guard edges 2 and 2a are referably constructed to form a row of teet although they may be made with plain edges without teeth.
The longitudinal edges of the guard edges 2 and 2a of the guard section 1 are upwardly and inwardly disposed and substantially confront a plane substantially parallel to the cutting edges of the blade, and may or may not extend even with the blade ed es; that is the blademay or'may not over ang the longitudinal edges. On the curved inclination of the guards and lying ahead of their free ends and ahead of the edge of the iiexed blade is a skin-depressing arc 2b which liesl Within the plane of the arc of the iiexed blade throu h its cuttin edges so that if the plane cfg the arc of t e blade were projected it would pass outside the skin-depress- B0 ing arc 2b. Between the middle portion 6 of the guard 1 and each of the guard edges 2 and 2a are longitudinal passages 15 and 15a formed inthe guard section by disposin upwards or forwards towards the blade the guard edges 2 and 2a. This feature has the advantages of permitting lather and hair to accumulate in the passages and at the same time making the device readily cleanable by passing water through it. The cutting ed e 9 of the blade 4 terminates perpendicularly above the free ends of the guard and extends lengthwise therewith; also, the cutting edge terminates preferably behind the guards free end skin-depressing surface 2b.
I also provide a handle 5 swivelled to the guard section by means of the securing member 9 in the aperture 14. The head of the securing member is internally threaded to` engage the stud 8. The securing member has 100 a collar portion spaced apart from the handle head 16 by the portion 9 which is of smaller circumference than the collar. The lower end of the collar 10 rests on a stop provided in the guard section 1, and the handle 5 where it joins the section 9 also meets a stop. The purpose of the stops is to substantially prevent, or at least limit, longitudinal lnotion while permitting rotation. By turning the handle 5 the, ilcxure of the blade can be controlled, or in case of nonflexible blades the guard edge spacing can be controlled. Also, the blade may be removed without detaching the handle from the guard section thereby reducing the number of parts to handle.
In Figures 2 and 5 I show the manner in which the handle is assembled. A well 11 is provided in the handle 5. The end 16 is placed in alignment withthe aperture 14 at the lower end while the section 9 of the handle securing member is aligned with the upper end of the aperture 14 and then driven through the aperture into the well 11.
I desire to point out that among the advantages of the curved guards as herein shown, an important' purpose is to provide a smooth and substantially continuous lead for the guard, and I, also, desire to point out that my handle and securing member construction are easily assembled and disassembled.
While I have shown a double edge blade and a double guard edge guard section, I wish it to be understood that I hold a guard edge for one blade cutting edge to come within the scope of this invention, and that this invention has especial application to safety razors which include blade holding means whereby the blade is held in position to a guard edge by blade holding means engaging the blade on more than one side thereof.
The invention is susceptible to many variations in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the invention.
Having described my invention what I claim is 1. In a safety razor, a blade-clamping member, a blade-supporting member, and a handle secured to the blade-supporting member by swivel means, said swivel means in'- cluding a longitudinally extending well provided in the handle and engaging a longitudinally extending stud having a shoul er on the clamping member-confronting end.
2. A safety razor comprising a transversely-lexible blade having a longitudinal cutting edge, in combination with a blade holder having a blade-supporting member head, a guard formed on a. curved inclination and having a free end spaced from said head, a skin-depressing surface included in said' curved inclination and lying ahead of said free end, said skin-depressing surface shaped ahead of the free end, to'curve within the plane of the projected plane through the cutting edge of the blade when flexed, a longitudinally extending lather-catching passage outwardly defined by the curved inclination, means for positioning the blade on said bladesupporting vmember head, a blade-clamping member overhanging the blade contacting face of the head and shaped to flex the blade transversely, and means for forcing the partsf together with the cutting edge of the blade extending lengthwise with and spaced per-V pendicularly above the said free end of the guard, said forcing means including a hanglee swivclled to the blade-supporting mem- 3. In a safety razor, a blade holder including the combination of a blade-supporting member of one piece construction provided on its upper side with a blade contacting head and on its lower side with an outwardly extending portion formed to a curved inclination to provide guard lingers having their free ends spaced from said head, a skindepressing surface included in said curved inclination and lying ahead of said free ends, said skin-depressing surface shaped ahead of the free ends to curve within the plane ofthe projected plane through the cutting edge of the blade when the latter is flexed, a longitudinally extending lathercatching passage outwardly deined by the said curved inclination, means for positioning a transversely flexible blade on said head, a blade-clamping member overhanging the blade contacting head and shaped to flex the blade transversely, and means for adjustably forcing the parts together with the cutting edge of the blade extending lengthwise with and spaced perpendicularly above the free ends of the guard fingers, said forcing means including a handle secured to the blade-supporting member by swivel means comprisng a longitudinally extending well in the handle in enragement with a longitudinally extending internally threaded stud having a shoulder seated in an annular rece'ss provided in the blade-supporting member.
