Description

TJNITE sraras arnln'r oarroa.
CHARLES W. LITTLEFIELD, NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO SIDNEY E. ELDREDGE AND ONE-THIRD TO JOHN H. BALCH, JR., OF
NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAWSE-SNUBBING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. LITTLE- FLELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hawse-Snubbing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to means for securing and paying out hawsers, cables, and the like used in connection with vessels, but it may be successfully employed for other purposes of an analogous character, and is thus not necessarily limited to such use.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide simple means of a novel character that will effectively clamp upon a cable to hold it against movement and may be quickly and conveniently operated not only in its clamping action, but to release the cable, said means moreover being operative upon cables of different sizes without the necessity of making relative adjustments between the diflerent elements or parts.
The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views therethrough at right angles to each other. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view with the base removed.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the particular form of structure disclosed, a body 5 is employed, which is provided in its upper side with an open-ended guide-way 6 having channels 7 formed in its opposite side walls by overhanging ribs or flanges 8. This body is also provided in its under side with a recessed open-ended seat 9, and slots 10 communicate with the guide-way and seat, and are disposed longi tudinally thereof. The guide-way 6 fun thermore is preferably provided with a stop wall 11 extending centrally across the same and arranged between the slots. This body is mounted on a base 12 suitably secured thereto, as shown at 13. Coacting reciprocatory cable-clamping jaws 1 1 are slidable Specification of Letters Patent.

cam slots 20 that receive the pins 17. A
handle 21, projecting from one side of the head, extends outwardly from one side of the body, and constitutes means for turnin said head. A quadrant rack 22, carried by the body, is arranged at one side of the handle, and a holding dog 23, mounted on said handle, cooperates with the rack to maintain the handle, and consequently the head in any position desired.
With this structure, it will be evident that asa cableor rope is passed between the jaws, the same can be clamped by turning the handle 21 in the proper direction, and can be quickly released-by moving it in an opposite direction. The structure is obviously exceedingly simple, and constitutes an effective snubbing device for the purposes described. With this structure, it will be obvious that there is no strain brought upon the journal pin of the head 19, and furthermore this head can be reversed, so that the handle may be made to operate in either direction desired.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art with; out further description, and it will be under stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device of the character described, comprising a body having a channeled guideway in its upper side and a recessed seat in its under side, together with slots that cominunicate With the guide-Way and seat, reciprozitory clamping jaws slidable toward and from each other in the guide-way and having depending pins that pass through the slots and are located in the recessed seat, a head journaled in the seat and having cam slots that receive the pins, said head having a handle projecting from one side of the body, and means for locking the handle in different positions. 10
In testimony whereof I hereunto LLlllX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. CHARLES W. LITTLEFIELD. Vitnesses:
CHARLES G. PRAY, BENJ. BARTH.
