With this object in view t e invention consists in certain novel features of construc- I tion and combinations of parts as will here inaftcr be set forth claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a typewritlng machine showing mv improved rewinding mechanism in side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, with the main frame of the machine and key mechanism omitted. p
1 represents a portion of the frame of a type writing machine in which key-bars 2 are mounted and provided with upwardly projecting arms 31 The arm 3 of each keylever is loosely connected at its upper end with the lower end of a type-bar 4,the latter being 'pivotally supported between its ends and provided at its upper end with a proper type. A platen bar 5 is disposed in position to cooperate with the type at the upper ends of the type-bars and this platen bar is provided with arms (3 which are pivotally supported by, a rod or shaft .7 and the rear ends of said arms are disposed under a fixed bar 8. Two arms or brackets 14,l5 are secured to the frameof the machine and extend a distance beyond the rear end of the latter. The arm 15 supports, at its free end, 'a stub shaft or journal 17 on which a disk 18 is loosely mounted and pressed in a direction toward the inner end of said stub-shaft or journal by means of'a spring l9,the said disk being provided on its inner face with a series of small projections 20 to enter sockets in one head of the reel 13. The other head of this reel is similarly connected with a disk 21 carried by a stub-shaft or journal 22 mounted in the hub 23 of a pinion 24. The hub 23 is mounted in a bearing afforded therefor at the free end of the arm or bracket 14 and is movable longitudinally in said bearing, being held in the position to which it may be moved by means of a set screw 25 entering one of two grooves 26 in the hub 23. When it is desired to remove the reel 13, this can-be readily accomplished by first pressing the reel laterally agamst the resistance of. the spring 19 and then withdrawing it from between the holding. disks 18 and 21. A stub-shaft 27 is mounted in a suitable bearing on the arm or bracket 14 and carries a gear wheel 28 and a crank-arm 29. Normally during the o eration of the machine, the gearing will e disposed as shown in Fig. 2, but when it is desiredto rotate the reel 13 manually, the pinion 24:
will be moved in a direction to cause it to mesh with the gear wheel 28 and then, by
turning the latter with the use of the crankarm 29, motion will be imparted to the reel for rotating it. As above stated however, this gearing will be normally out of mesh as shown in Fig. 2, durin the rewinding of the paper strip or sheet. W on the machine is in operation. 7
Levers 30 are loosel mounted between their ends uponthe re ,01' shaft 7 near respective arms 6 of the platen bar 5 and to the lower ends of the depending arms of these levers, rods or pitmen 31 are connected.
The other ends of these rods or pitmen 31 are supported b means of links 32 mounted loosely on and epending from the'fulcrum rod 33. on which the type-bars 4 are hung. The rods or pitmen 31 project beyond the vertical plane of the type-bars and are connected WlLll the ends of. a rod 34 disposed in position to be moved when one or more of form of roller 40 adapte the type-bars may be operated.
The upwardly extending arms of the levers 30 are connected with a rod or bar 35 disposed over the feed roller 12 and this red or bar carries a feeder 36 which c0- operates with the roller 12 to feed the paper at each manipulation of the keys. Also attached to or connected with the upper ends of the levers 30 are two rods or bars 37 which are so ported by means of diagonally disposed links 38 attached at their lower ends to intermediate portions of said rods or bars and at their upper ends to the brackets 14 and 15. Arms 39 are pivotally connected with the free ends of the rods or bars 37, said arms being curved downwardly and extending in a direction toward the rear of the machine frame where the are attached to a rod or bar referaby in the to rest upon the sheet or stri of paper 10 after the latter has passed the feed roller 12. One of the pivoted arms 39 is provided with an extension 41 having a blunt-ended tooth 42 at its free end to engage a ratchet wheel 43 secured to the stub-shaft 22.
When a key-lever is operated, the lower arm of the type-bar or lever will move the rod 34=nrwardly and thus transmit motion, through. the medium of the pitmen' 31 to the levers 30. This will cause the rods or bars 37 to move 'in a direction'toward the reel 13 and the tooth 42 to co'operate'with the ratchet wheel 43 and turn the reel 13 suiiiciently to wind an amount of paper approximately equal to the amount of paper moved forwardly b the feedin mechanism of the machine. l t will be 0 served that the roller 40 carried by the arms 39 ,will rest upon the paper sheet or strip with suflicient pressure to depress the same and cause it to assume a position such as illustrated in Fig. 1 when the rewinding mechanism is first started and there is but a small amount of paper on the reeL' When the parts are operated as above described, the rods or bars 37 will not only move lon 'tu'dinally but, by reason of the inclined lin s 38, said bars will be caused to rise slightly and raise the arms 39,thus relieving somewhat the pressure of the roller 40 upon the paper and permitting the latter to slacken. On account of'this o erat-ion, the reel will be caused to wind s ackenedpaper thereupon and thus reduce toa minimum the possibility of winding more pa er u on the reel than has been ermitte to e led forwardly by. the eedi mechanism when the machine is operat ifi to print. As the paper accumulates on the reel and the roll of paper thus increases in diameter, there may be a. greater pulling force exerted on the paper sheet and more paper might be wound on the reel than had been fed forward by the pa er, feed'niechanism. of the machine. It wi be observed however, that when that portion of the paperstrrp or sheet between the feed roller 12 andthe reel tends to become taut, the arms, 39 will be raised and the tooth 42 moved in .a direction away from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 43. If. this movement is very slight,
during the operation of the rewlndin meqhx anism, the tooth 42 may be cause automatically by the condition of the paperyto cotiperate with the ratchet wheel 43 in an intermitting manner and in this way pre-;" vent the reel 13 from being turned, under any conditions, far enough topull papers through the paper feed mechanism of the machine.

In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a ratchet wheel and means for connecting the same with a reel, o'f a longitudinally movable bar, and an arm ivotal y supported by said bar'and provi ed with a tooth to cotiperate with said ratchet wheel, said arm disposed in osition to be actuated: by paper to be ree ed and move the dog relatively to the ratchet wheel.
