Description
R. O. OWENS.
I CHIMNEY TOP PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 31, 1909.
. Patented Dec.27,1910.
UNETED STATES PATENT GFFlCE.
ROBERT C. OWENS, 0F PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY-TOP PROTECTOR.
Application filed December 31, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT C. OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Top Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chimney top pro tectors, and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character which is adapted to be seated upon the usual projecting course of bricks below the top of the chimney.
Another object is to so construct the-pro tector that it may be readily assembled about the chimney top, and occupy a comparatively small space when collapsed.
/Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device shown applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View showing the overlapping lugs of the sides. Fig. 4 is a view showing the manner of securing together the lower edges of the protector.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the protector inclosing the top of a chimney 1 The sides 2 of the protector 1 are formed of cast metal having their upper and lower portions embracing the sides of the chimney and the intermediate portions stepped outwardly forming the bulging portions 2, and their upper corners provided with lugs or ears 3, the lugs of two of the sides resting upon the lugs of the other sides. A top or cover 5 having an opening 5 and its edges extending beyond the sides of the protector is secured thereto by bolts 6 passing through said top and the lugs or ears 3 of the sides and fastened by nuts 7. The lower corners of the sides of the protector are secured to one another by means of bolts 8 and nuts 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description it will be Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Serial No. 535,866.
seen that I have provided a chimney cover A or protector which may be readily placed about the chimney top, to protect it from the elements and which by casting the sides in various designs or conformations will adapt it to chimney tops of various constructions.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed, as new, is
1. A chimney top protectorcomprising side plates arranged with their side edges juxtaposed and their top edges all in the same plane, a cover resting on the top edges of the plates, overlapping lugs at the adjacent edges of contiguous plates, and fastenings securing the cover to the plates and securing contiguous plates together, said fastenings passing through the overlapping lugs of the plates.
2. A chimney top protector comprising side plates arranged with their top edges all in the same-plane and their side edges contiguous throughout their length, a cover resting on the top edges of the plates, overlapping lugs at the adjacent edges of contiguous plates, fastenings securing the cover to the plates and securing contiguous plates together, said fastenings passing through the overlapping lugs of the plates, and fastenings connecting contiguous plates together at their lower corners.
8. A chimney protector comprising angularly disposed plates having their side edges abutting, lugs on the upper corners of theplates extending outwardly therefrom, the lugs of one plate being arranged in overlapping relation with the lugs of adjacent plates and so disposed that the plates will have their top edges flush, a cover resting on the top edges of the plates, and bolts passing through the corners of the cover and through the overlapping lugs to secure the covers of the plates and adjacent plates together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT C. OWENS. Witnesses:
STANLEY D. OwENs, ROBERT S. ATWATER.
