HOLDER FOB PLUMES AND SIMILAR ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed September 12, 1910. Serial No. 581,643.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, EUGENE IV. M0011, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Plumes and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a holder for plumes and similar articles, which permits the plumes to be alternately incased or displayed'without handling. In this way the plume may be emboxed, righted and attractively presented to customers without being soiled or damaged, while its natural hang is in no wise interfered with.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder showing the plume folded and inca'sed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the plume righted and displayed; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a similar section of a modification; Fig. 5 a section through a modification of the keeper, and Fig. 6 a face view thereof showing it applied to a box for a single plume.
A box 10 adapted to hold a suitable number of plumes 11 is provided with a folding front 12, hinged at 13 to the bottom 14 of the box. Front 12 has end flanges 15 adapted to overlap the box-sides 16, to which they may be removably attached by fasteners 17 so that when the box is closed, its sides are held against collapsing during shipment or handling. A suitable number of keepers are formed on the inner side of front 12, each keeper being adapted for the attachment of a plume or similar article. As shown, front 12 is provided with a lining sheet 18, which remains detached at intervals from the front to form a suitable number of intervening pockets 19. At each pockets, lining 18 is apertured as at 20 for the admission of the plume-stem 21, having a heel 22 which is bent at right angles to said stem and which is accommodated within the pocket. A latch 23 constituting a lining-depressing member is pivoted to lining 18, in proximity to aperture 20, and is adapted to be projected over the lining above heel 22, so as to lock the plume to front 12.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, box 10 may be rovided with a series of partitions 24, which divide the box into a number of compartments 25, each adapted in size and configuration for the reception of a single plume. When front 12 is folded, the plumes will be lowered into their respective compartments and then the front may be locked to sides 16 by catches 17, while a cover 26 may be closed. Whenever the plumes are to be presented for display or selling purposes, cover 26 is raised, catches 17 are opened and front 12 is folded down to rest in a horizontal position on the table, counter or other support of box 10. The plumes are thus automatically swung into an upright position without being in any way touched by the hand, and without having their shape damaged, or their natural graceful hang impaired. It will be seen that my improved holder constitutes a box and also a stand which are readily convertible into one another, and alternately incase and display the article secured to the movable member of said holder.
'In Fig. 4:, I have shown a box adapted for the reception of a single plume, in which case, partitions 24 are dispensed with, while the position of the plume is preferably reversed.
In Figs. 5 and 6 pocket 19 is provided with a triangular flap 27 in lieu of the aperture 20 shown in Fig. 2. The bent stem 21 of plume 11 is slipped underneath flap 27 through incision 28 defining the flap and is held down by the pivoted latch 23, swung over said flap.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a box having a folding front, a plume having a heel bent at right angles to its stem, and a keeper on the inner face of the front that is removably engaged by said heel, whereby the plume is lodged in a horizontal position within the box when the front is folded, and righted when the front is unfolded.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a box having a folding front, a keeper on the inner face of said front and adapted to removably attach thereto a plume or similar article extending at right angles to sald front, end flaps on the front that are adapted to be projected over the box sides, and fasteners for removably securing the box-sides to said flaps, whereby saidsides are held against inward deflection when the adapted to receive the bent heel of a plumefasteners are closed. stem, and lining depressing means engaging i 3. A device of the character described, the detached linin section above said heel. 10 comprising a box having a folding front, EUGENE W. MOCH. 5 a partly detached lining on the inner face Witnesses:
of the front and apertured at its detached FRANK v. BRIESEN, section, to form an intervening pocket KATHERYNE KOCH.
