To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVIS MARINSKY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appert ains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to typewriting machines, and the object thereof is to provide an attachment for machines of this class which will do away with the use of carbon paper in the form of sheets similar to the paper sheets employed for duplicating purposes, said attachment being adapted to be connected'with the framework of the machine so as not to interfere with the platen roller carriage, or the operation thereof, and said attachment being provided with means for supporting a small rotatable duplicator in front of the platen roller and at the rear of the tape support in such manner that the type stroke will always be on: one side of said duplicator, or radially of the center thereof, said duplicator being also preferably rotatably supported, and the back thereof being provided with carbon or carbon material similar to the material from which the type ribbon of machines of this class are made.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawin s form a part, in which the separate parts 0 my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view showing the platen roller of a typewriting machine and indicating the back of the frame in dotted lines, and showing the type ribbon support and showing my improvement applied to the machine; Fig. 2 a partial transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1- with parts omitted; Fig. 3 a side view on an en larged scale of a support for the duplicator which I employ, said duplicator being shown in section; Fig. 4 a front view of the support shown in Fig. 3 and showing a top connection thereof; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 transverse sections of the duplicator which I employ and showing different modifications thereof; Fig. 8 a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing a modification; and, Fig. 9 a section onthe line 99 of Fig. I

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown at ain Fig. 2, the back of the frame of typewriting machine of ordinary construction, and this back of said frame is also indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. I have also shown at b in Figs. 1 and 2 the paper or platen roller of a machine of this class, and at 0, one of the type bars provided with the usual type 0 and in frontof the platen roller shown in Fig. 1, I have also illustrated.

vide an attachment comprising a supporting rod or member f which, when the attachment is in position, is above and ranges longitudinally of and over the platen roller 6, and said supporting rod or member f is provided at its ends with angular arms f which, in the form of construction shown, are provided with oblong loops f through which are passed screws or similar devices f, by means of which the attachment is secured to the back of the frame of the machine, and with this construction the attachment may be adjusted so that the distance between the rod f and the platen roller 12 may be increased or decreased at. will.

Loosely connected with the rod and adapted to slide thereon is a fiat flexible or curved arm or supplemental support to the top portion of which and to the fzont side thereof is pivoted, as shown at g, a flat flexible finger g which is curved or adapted to be curved in the same manner as the. arm 9 and to correspond with the curve of the platen roller 5 in cross section.

In the form of construction shown, the lower end of the arm 9 is provided with a reversed loop or hook 9 adapted to receive the end 9 of the finger g and the front side of the arm 9 is provided at a predetermined distance from the lower end thereof with a pivot pin or stud g on which my im rovedduplicator it is rotatably mounted said duplicator bein with a central'laperture hf videdwith an eyelet.

In practice, the arm g which supports the duplicator h is adjusted on the rod 7 so that the center of the duplicator is at one side of the space 0 where the type strike, and in the use of the machine with my improvement the paper sheets i and 2' are passed around the platen roller b in the usual manner, and in the direction of the arrow :2; in Fig. 2, and as the said sheets i and i of paper pass around the said roller, the end g of the duplicator holder passes between said sheets and the method of using the machine, in this respect, is exactly the same as the method of using the machine in its usual or original form.

When the sheets of paper have been placed in position, as described and as shown in Fig. 2, the duplicator it will be supported as hereinbefore described and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in the operation of the machine, the type strike in the space 6 and at one slde or radially of the duplicator h, and a duplicate copy is produced on the sheet i in the usual manner. With my improvement, however, and when the back of the duplicator is provided with a carbon coating or covering made similar to the type ribbon d both the sheets of writing will be originals, or in other words, the

writing on both the sheets will appear exactly the same, and it will also be apparent that when the duplicator h is made in the manner last above described, the back sheet i will not be smudged or dirtied in any way.

The duplicator k may be made in inany ways, three of which are shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the carbon backing of the linen sheet is of the same dimensions as said sheet and both the front and back of said duplicator are smooth and even. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the edge of the linen or fibrous front of the duplicator is folded over the ed e of the carbon or carbon-tape back thereoi while in the construction shown in Fig. 7, a single fabric sheet is employed, one side thereof being coated or provided with carbon and the edges thereof being provided with a bindin 7L My invention is not imited to the exact means herein'shown and described for supporting the duplicator h in front of the platen roller I) nor to the exact method of supporting said duplicator herein shown and described, vwhereby the said duplicator is positioned at one side of the type stroke space and, in practice, the said duplicator erases may be supported at either side of the type stroke space, or directly over the same, all that is necessary, in this connection, being that the said duplicator be so supported that the type will strike on one side portion thereof, or between the center thereof and one edge thereof.

By rot-atably sup orting the duplicator h the length of time fdr which it may be used is greatly extended as will be readily understood, and said duplicator may be rotated by hand or in any other way.

Although, I have shown the duplicator h as circular inform only, it will be apparent that said duplicator may be of any desired shape or form, and my invention, as will be understood, is not limited to other exact details of construction shown and described herein, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, the gist of my invention being in the duplicator h and in an attachment for the machine so constructed as to support said duplicator in front of the platen roller and rearwardly of the support of the type ribbon of the machine in such manner that the type bars and type will operate thereon, or in connection therewith as hereinbefore described.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. An attachment for typewriting machines adapted to be connected with a stationary art of the frame thereof and comprising in its construction a top member which is supported over the paper roller of the machine, and which passes between the sheets of paper as they leave the said roller in the operation of making duplicate copies, and a duplicator holder connected with said top member and extending downwardly and forwardly in front of the paper roller.

2. An attachment for typewriting machines adapted to be connected with a stationary part of the frame thereof and comprising 1n its construction atop member which is supported over the paper roller of the machine, a duplicator holder connected with said top member and extending down wardly and forwardly in front of said roller, said duplicator holder and said top member operating to se arate the sheets of paper as they leave sai roller in the operation of making duplicate copies and a duplicator detachably connected with said duplicator holder.

3. An attachment for typewriting machines adapted to be connected with a stationary part of the frame thereof and com prising in its construction a horizontal top erased a with said top member and extending in front of said roller, said duplicator holder and said top member serving. to separate sheets of paper as they leave said roller in tionary part of the frame thereof and cor'nprising in its construction a duplicator holder-which is supported over and in front of'the paper roller of the machine, and which se arates the sheets of leave sai roller in the operation of making duplicate copies.

5. An attachment for typewriting machines adapted to be connected with a stapaper as they.
