To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it kfiown that I, WARD S. IRELAND. of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and usein Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same. I This invention relates to improvements in copy-holders,-the object of the invention being, to provide a. copy holder adaptable for a continuous strip or sheet of paper such as employed with stenographic typewriting machines and which will enable a considerable portion of the strip to be exposed to view.
A further object is to so construct a copyholder of the type above mentioned that the operator can readily move the paper step by step by-the mani )ulation of a key and so that at each manipu ation of the key, he can expose a new. section of the paper throughout the full height of the holder.
A further object is to provide a copyholder for a continuous paper sheet, with means for transferring the continuous sheet from one reel to another in such manner that the outer end of the written sheet'of paper coming from one reel will wound first upon the other (empty) reel, and thus reverse the written sheet end for end and enable the operator to transcribe the notes on said sheet in regular order as the sheet is passed over the holder and gradually rewound o the first reel.
A furtf er object is to so construct a copyholder f r a continuous sheet or strip 0 paper, tl at it can be folded into compact form an occupy small space when not in use.-
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a copy-holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan View on an enlarged scale with the frame omitted. Fig- 3 paper supporting the device folded, and

1 1 represents a rectangular frame or base provided at its corners with depending legs 2 to form supports for said frame. At one end of the rectangular base frame 1, the lower end of a paper supporting frame 3 is pivotally connected by means of pins 4. This paper supporting frame comprises a series of sect-ionshinged together in order to permit said frame to be folded in compact form over the base frame when the ma chine is not in use and the parallel members porting frame are connected by means of a cross-bar 5 upon which small rollers 6 may be mounted to reduce friction of the paper passing over the frame. When the machine is in use, the paper supporting frame 3 is maintained in an upright position by means of brace arms 7 pivotally attached at their lower ends to pins 8 at one end of the base frame 1, and at their upper forward ends said brace arms are removably connected with the paper supporting frame. The brace arms 7 may be connected between their ends by a cross-rod 9 and the connection of the upper forward ends of said brace arms with the paper supporting frame is such as to lock the members of said frame together.
Pairs of spring pressed trunnions 10 and 11 are supported by the base frame 1 near respective ends thereof and each of said trunnions is provided at its knob 19.. The trunnions of the respective pairs are provided at their inner ends with suitable disks 13 to engage and removably hold in. place. reels 1 1 and 15 respectively. Each reel is provided with a hub or extension 16 projecting beyond one end thereof and is engaged by cent trunnion and on the hubs of the respect-ive'reels, pinions 17 and 18 are secured. lVhen a reel is removed from the machine, its hub 16 with the pinions thereon will also be removed but as the reel is separable from the hub, the latter can be replaced between the pair of spring pressed trunnions.
A stud 18 secured to one side'of the base frame 1 has mounted thereon a gear wheel 19 meshing with the pinion cent reel hub. This stud also has mounted thereon, a pinion of the upper section of the said paper sup- 17 on the adja- 20 which is rotatable with Cir outer end with a ,the gear wheel 19 and carries a pivoted pawl 21 which engages the teeth of a pinion '22 loosely mounted upon said stud 18. A lever 23 is pivotally supported at 24 by the forward portion of the base frame and provided at its rear end with an upwardly projecting curved rack 25 adapted to mesh with the p nion 22 on the stud 18., To the other arm of this lever a' finger bar 26 having a key or button 27 at it's free end, is connected by a rule joint as shown at28. When the machine is not in use the finger bar. 26' can be Y folded over the machine as shown in Fig. 2.

By shifting the arm 33, the gear wheel 36 can be caused to meshw'ith either the pinion 20 on the stud 18 or the pinion 31 on the stud 29 for the purpose of transmitting motion to one or the other of the reels to'oper'ate the same manually.
When a reel of paper is removed from the rewinder of a stenographic typewriting mavas to cause the chine, the beginning of the matter written,
upon the strip will be at the inside of the roll of paper on said reel. Such a reel of paper is placed on'the'. core 16 betweenthe spring pressed trunnions 10 and an empty reel is spring pressed trunnions 11. The paper strip will then be connected with the empty reel and the oscillatory arm 33 shifted'so gear 36 to mesh with the pinion 31. By now operating the crank-arm 37 the gear 36 will be actuated to transmit motion, through the mediuin of the pinion- 31, gear 30 and pinion 18 to the empty reel and cause 'the strip of paper to be transferred from one reel to the other and in thus transferring the paper strip, it will be reversed end for end. The arm 33 will be now shifted so as to move the gear 36 out of mesh with the gear or pinion 31. .The paper supporting frame 3 may now be placed or adjusted to the position for use as shown in Fig. 1 and the paper from the filledreel passed upwardly over said supporting frame and then downwardly to the I reel which first carried the strip and the paplaced on the reel core between the per will be so wound on this reel that the blank side of the, paper will be faced outwardly. It will be. observed that a considerable amount of the paper strip will be exposed on the frame 3 and by manipulating the key-bar '26 the rack 25 will be-elevated'and, meshing with the pinion 22 will transmit motion through, the interposed gearing to the reel at the rear ofthe machine and cause an amount of paper to be wound thereon approximately equal to the amount of paper supportingframe 3. -It is apparent t by moving the finger bar 26 less thanits exposed to view of the operator by the paper full vthrow a smaller amount 'of paper can t be fed at a time over the frame 3.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let'- ters-Patent, is,
1. In adevice ofthe character described, the combination with I "reel supporting means mounted on said base a base, frame, of two frame, a collapsible frame or stretcher superimposed over the base frame, for sup orting T paper passing from one reel on the ase to -the other, a rack bar, gearing between said rack bar and one of the reel supporting means on the base frame, and manually operated means for actuating said rack bar.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base frame, means on said base frame for supportingdelivery' and receiving reels, and means for operatmg frame or stretcherhinged to and foldable over the base frame, and means for supporting said collapsible frame or stretcher in an upright position, whereby paper can pass over said collapsible frame from a supply reel on the base frame to a receiving reel also on said base frame. r
3. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a base frame, means on said base frame for supporting delivery and receiving reels, and means for operating the reel-supporting means, of a collapsible frame hinged at one end of the base frame, and braces hinged at the opposite end of the base frame end engaging the collaps1 ble frame for supporting the latter in an from oversaid collapsible frame from a de livery reel to a receiving reel on the base frame.
4. In a device of the character described,
