DOLL-EYES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed November 29, 1909. Serial No. 530,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnono SCI-IERF, manufacturer of dolls, whose post-otliee is No. 8% Bahnhofstrasse, Sonneberg, S. M., Germany, have invented certain new and useful.
Improvements in Doll-Eyes; and I do hereto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved form of eyes for dolls and has for its principal object the simulation, of closed and opened eyes when the doll head is placed in different positions.
The invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out and ascertained in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional view of a (loll head including the devices of my invention with the head of the doll in an upright or vertical position. F ig. 2 is a detached rear View of a part of the structure on which the eyes'are formed or painted. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the part shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional View similar to Fig. l with the doll head in a reclining or horizontal position and illustrating the eyes as being open. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the eyes closed.
Like letters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
As shown the invention includes movable means in the form of a fork b on the ends of which theeyes 0 are provided. The fork Z) is provided with a pivot Z adapted to be mounted in the head of the doll to permit the eye-fork to swing in the manner shown. The fork Z is preferably weighted, as at e, and the weight 6 is connected to the fork by rods d, so that when the doll head is in a vertical or upright position the fork will normally tend to swung into the position shown in Fig. 1, and when the doll head is in the position shown in Fig.6, the fork will normally tend to move in the position shown to simulate closed eyes. A suitable stop or buffer m is provided to arrest movement of the fork in one direction and a similar stop or buffer 112. is provided to arrest movement of the fork in another direction as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
One of the primary objects of this inven tion is to render the operation of the eyes as natural as possible for the purpose of making the doll attractive to the young, and to this end, mechanism is provided for preventing the weight e from initially moving the eye-fork under certain conditions. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 4 that the eyes are open when the doll head is in a reclining position, thus simulating the doll as lying down and awake. It is also the purpose of this mechanism to prevent changing the position of the eyes accidentally, as by sudden jars or slight inclinations when the doll head is in a vertical or upright position as shown in Fig. 1. Referring to this mechanism specifically, n designates a cam or hearing plate having a recess or cam surface 7:2. A support 7, secured to the doll head is provided with a spring 1 having a curved por tion 7) adapted for engagement with the cam surface it. Such engagement is shown in Fig. 1 wherein the spring holds the eye-fork locked to simulate open eyes. The engagement of the Weight 6 with the buffer m serves to additionally steady the fork. The tension of the spring 9 is sufficient to retain the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, even when the doll head is reclined into a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4. If however the child desires the eyes to be moved to a closed position a slight jerk or sudden shifting of the doll head will serve-to release the eyes from the spring and permit the parts to assume the position shown in Fig. 5.
I claim.-
1. In combination, a doll head provided with openings in the face thereof, movably mounted means simulating eyeballs movable abreast of and away from said openings, a gravity acting device for maintaining said means abreast of said openings to simulate open eyes when the tion and serving to move said means away from said openings to simulate closed eyes when the doll head is in another position,
and mechanism cooperating with saidmeans to hold the same in one position and upon shaking the head to release said means and permit said device to operate the same.
2. In combination, 'a doll head provided with openings in the face thereof, movably mounted means simulating eye balls movable abreast of and away from said openings, a gravity acting device arranged to maintain said means abreast of said openings to simu:
doll head is in one posilate open eyes when the doll head is in one position and serving to move said means to simulate closed eyes when the doll head is in another position, and mechanism cooperating with said means to hold the same in a position to simulate open eyes and serving upon shaking the head to release said means and permit. said device to move the same into a position to simulate closed eyes.
3. In.combination, a doll head provided with openings, in the face thereof, a pivotally mounted member having portions simulating eye balls and arranged to be movable abreast of said openings, a weight on said member arranged to maintain the same in a position to simulate open eyes when the doll head is in a vertical position and closed eyes when the doll is in a horizontal position, and means cooperating with said member to hold the same in a position to simulate open eyes irrespective of the position of the head and serving when the head is shaken to release said member and'permit operation thereof under the influence of said weight.
4. In combination, a doll head provided with openings in the face thereof, apivotally mounted member having portions simulating eye balls movable abreast of and away from said 0 enings, a weight secured to said member an serving to hold the same in a position to simulate open eyes when the doll head is in a vertical position and closed eyes when the doll head is in a horizontal position, and a spring engaging said member and serving to hold the same in a position to simulate open eyes when the doll head is in either position and serving when the doll head is shaken to release said member to permit actuation thereof under the influence of said weight.
5. In combination, a doll head including movable means for simulating the eyes of the doll arranged to be moved to simulate closed eyes, and mechanism for releasably holding said means in a position'to simulate open eyes irrespective of the position of the doll head and adapted to be released to permit said means to assume a positionto simulate closed eyes when the doll head is in one position. l,
".6. In combination, a doll head including movable means simulating the eyes of the doll and arranged for movement to simulate closed eyes, and mechanism for releasably holding said means in a' position to simulate open eyes irrespective of the position of the doll head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER FELDMANN, I FREDERICK J. DIETZMAN.
