Patenten am. ai, reeel 5 .Application led March 99, 1916. serial No''. (GRANTED "UNDER TEE PROVISEQNS 0F THE ACT FMARCH 3, 1921, dlll?. EL., 1313.)
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that LFRANZ REINHARDT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 36 Bahnhofstrasse, Waltershausen, in the Duchy of Gotha, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Sleeping Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the eyes of a sleeping doll may be kept open or be reopened in a lying position of the doll. v
Various devices are known which cause a closing of the eyes of sleeping dolls when these are laid down. lln order to approach natural conditions as near as possible it is desirable that such sleeping dolls should keepltheir eyes open also l1n a lying position.
For this purpose devices have been proposed, i
by means of which the eyes may be opened and closed from the outside by pulling a string or actuating a lever g in other devices a movable stop may be actuated from the outside by means of a knob or the like, s0
that said lug locks the weighted lever.
Still further devices are known, which allow of laying a doll down, keeping the eyes open. ln these devices the locking means` may be released by intermittent or step by step movements of the doll, so that the eyes again become iree to move. Such devices, however, require a certain skill or exercise in the use of the doll and by their jerking movement they frequently damage the delicate eye-mechanism.
rllhe object of my invention is to avoid these inconveniences in providing means whereby .the parts for locking or releasing `the eyes or lids are 'automaticall actuated in a simple, secure and gentle wa y turning the doll from ne side to theot er.
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a vertical section through a dolls head according to my a back view, the weight being left away; 3 is a cross-section; Fi s. d and 5 are back views of other forms oi my invention; Figs. 6 to 8 are further forms of my said invention in various views.
ais the dolls head in the interior of which are the eyes pivotally arrangedon the ends invention; Fig. 2 is c of awire hoop or oke e, supported by eyelets al. Acting on t e wire'yoke er is a spring f, tending to'keep the eyes in constant en'- gagement with the eye openings in the head. uspended from the top g' of thehead is a weight l1. which is attached to the cross bar v2- connecting the `two Veyes and which causes the eyes b to turn.'` Pivotally arranged above the movable eyes are the' eye lids Z, con
.nected with each other by a stay or bridge lo.
oses the eye lids when the slide in the sleeve. A cross pin fr' fixed to the.
pin g and guided in a slot s of the sleeve p limits the inward and outward movements of the i`n g. A
' hen the doll is turned over to the right, the pin g automatically slides out of the sleeve p and locks the rod of the pendulum o, I
thus preventing this pendulum from swinging lllherefore, when'the doll is turned or laid on its ri ht side, the eyes will remain open also in t e lying position. rllt the doll is intended to again have a sleeping position, it only wants turning over onto its 'left side'. rlhe pin g then slides back, releases the pendulum o and consequently also the eye lids.
As shown in Fig. Ll, the member locking the pendulum omay also consist in a pivotally arranged lever having aweight et tired,
to its lower end. hen turning the doll to the right, the weight u causes thelever t to adopt the position shown in dotted lines and to lock the pendulum o which closes the eye lids or brings about the sleeping condition. ln this case also a pivotally arranged stop naybe provided on each side of the pendulln the form shown in Fig. 5 two hired stops 'v are providedat the sides of the pendulumo inside ot the dolls head.` This pendulum o is suspended by means of an eyelet w to the pivotal bridge k of the eye lids in such a way., that it may not only swing forward and ico' as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5.' 'llhe ends of the Hat stops 'v facing the pendulum o are turned upto form hooks w. When the doll is laid on the one or the other side, the pendulum swings' slightly to one side and gets caught in the hook-shaped end of the respective stop. Therefore the pendulum will be prevented vfrom swinging out into the position corresponding to the closed eye lids. lf
the doll is laid down on its back the pendulum o can freely swing and pass between the two ixed stops lu, thus bringing about the sleeping condition. The stops may also be designed in many other ways. For instance the fixed stops could also be made of wire.A
`With the devices referred to above and in cases when the doll is laid on the side with closed eyes, so that the locking pin projects out of the sleeve, this locking pin may prevent the mechanism of the sleeping eyes from acting, so that the eyes will not open.
This can lbe avoided by providing the mov-l able pendulum with a stop which prevents the action ofthe locking member as for instance the movement of the locking pin into the lockingy position when the/doll 1s in an unsuitable position.
F'g. 6 shows a side view of this form ofmy invention in connection' with a section through the dolls .head and Figs 7-8 show two plan views with the, respective parts ih 1 various positions.
3&5
The pendulum Io is provided with an arcshaped plate o1 and as shown in Fig. 7, the locking pin g engages the edge of said plate when the eyes of .the doll have to remain open. Y. 3
l But, as further shown in lFig.A 8 this plate o1. prevents the pin from sliding out of its sleeve and from locking the pendulum in an unsuitable position of the doll as in such case the pin strikes against the lateral surface of t e plate Vo1 and is prevented from locking the pendulum. i
The position and the form of the plate o1 depends on the design of the devicescausing.
' the movements of the eyes or the lids and the drawing only shows one example of this device.
ll claim as my invention:
