Description
UNBE@ STATE PTENT FFQE.
(3E-:ARLES H. WESTCOTT, 0E SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNGR OF ONEHALF TO CHARLES E. JEWELL, OE' SENECA FALLS, NE'W YORK.
BULEB.
Application filed June 23, 1909.
To all whom tz' may concern.'
Be it known that l, @Hannes H. lnsr- Co'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident or" Seneca Falls, in the county ot Seneca and State of lew York, have invented certain new and useful inproveinents in Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rulers.
Rulers inade of bex-wood and seine other materials frequently chip or break oit at the corners of the beveled edge or edges. rl`his occurs especially frequently with bor:- wood rulers because ot the brittleness of the wood.
i principal object otl iny invention is to prevent this chipping or breaking.
)in exeinpliiiying structure in which iny invention is einbodied will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a top view oi a ruler, the center portion being broken away. Fig. Q is an end view ot the saine. Fig. 3 is a cross section. Fig. l is a detail view showing disconnected inetal parts. Fig. is a plan view of one end oil a ruler showing a ineditied forni of the invention, and Fig. G is an end view of the structure et Fig. 5.
Reference character R designates any ruler body provided with a bevel B.
E is the Ausual nietal edge inserted in the bevel to forni the ruling surface. On each end of the bod)T l place a nietal plate P which inay have the saine shape as the end of the body, as shown in `Fig. 2. The plates are slotted at S to receive the ends of the edges E. The edges inay be secured in the plates in any suitable way. n ordinary tight fit niay be depended on or the edges inay be soldered in or the overlying portions of the end plate inay be pressed together upon the metal edge after it is inserted. lt

will be evident that the metal edge E and the end plates l) protect the wood body of the ruler at the corners of the beveled portion and prevent the chipping or breaking of the wood at these points even when the ruler is subjected to hard usage.
rhe invention is adapted to rulers in which there are two ruling edges as shown in Figs. l to e. The bach edge of the ruler niay be provided with a second nietal edge E which is secured in the end plates in any suitable way, as has been described with reference to the edge E.
Figs. 5 and G show a modification of the invention in which the plates are inade narrower than the end of the ruler body and arranged so that a portion R ot the body extends over the upper ec ges of the plates, concealing the plates from view except where they appear on the beveled portion of the ruler. A great inany other nioditications in structure and arrangement of the parts niay be inade without departing from the invention. Figs. 5 and 6 show one way in which the plates inay be secured to the ruler body by pins p driven through holes in the plates and engaging the body of the ruler.
l claini:
A ruler comprising a wood body having a beveled edge, a nietal straight edge inserted in the beveled edge of the wood body, and fiat inetal end plates secured to the ends of the wood body, said end plates having slots therein to receive the ends of the ine-tal straight edge, and the ends of the straight edge terminating tiush with the face of the end plates and being iirinly secured in the slots in said end plates.
