POCKET-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Deo. 2tlg itt-MIG.,
Application led March 17, 193.0. Serial No. 556,033.
To oit 'whom it may concern.' le it known that l, loLLm F., HALL, of' Liverpool. in the county of Onondaga, in the State ot New ,Yorin have invented new and useful linprovenicn in Pocl;et-l"asteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying' draivings', is a full, clear, and exact iflesci'i} tioii.
rllhis invention relates to certain improveineuts in pocket Fasteners adapted niore`r parwatch pockets to prevent inalieious removal of the watch, although it is apparent that it is eq'nalllv useful in retain ing other articles which might otherwise become displared from the pocket.
Ythe :nain object is to proride opposite sides ot the mouth of the pocket with seltclosingl flaps movable intlependentl)V of said i es to ell'ertivel.Y retain a watch or other rtieies in the pocket against accidental or malicious displacement therefrom and at the saine linie permitting' the flaps to be opened hv the insertion ot' the lingers when it de sired to remove such article or articles.
Other objects and ases will be brought out followingr description. ln the drawings: Figure l is an elevation a A'arxnent showing a pocket partly broken awa)v and equipped with inv improved fastener. Fie'. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the pocket showing the fastener in end 'elevatimr llig. 3 is a perspective view of the detached fastener. Fig. et is a similar perspective view ot the detached spring forming' the means for autoiuatieall)Y closing the flaps. Fig. 5 is an enla p transverse startionalr view throughA the 'fastener and adjacent portions of the pocket showing the stitching bv which said fastener i: .secured to the pocket.
i'his fastener is adapted to bc inserted and secar il within the opening' sident' mouth of an)7 pocket, ---f/-. of a gai-nient and eoi'nprises similar parallel arms ---loi spring1 wire provided one end with upturlxed arms -Q which are united b v a coil mff; tensione so as to spring' press the arras 1* toward each other, tht` opposite ends ot said arrns being' also provided with `upturned extensions l`-;ha\ving iuturned otlsets ei-H substantiallwparallel with and overlyingtheir resInativc arnis -l-. llach ot' these arms --l-- and their extensions --2-. w53"- and vtm are inclosed within suitable sheaths ---5-- of tabric or other flexible material which are united at oneend to embrace the extensions 2 and coil 43-, 'the opposite ends beiugr separable or adapted to be spread apart. ythese arnis l together with their eX- tensions and sheaths constitute tlapsthe upper edges of which are suitably secured as b v stitching Hc to the opgosite sides, as t", ot' the pocket near the open side or niouth thereof, as best seen in Fig, 2, leavingl the remaining?y portions free to move independently or the sides -cand norniallyY each other spring tensioned' toward at the bottoni.
lt is now clear upon reference more pars titula ly to Fig. 2, that when the Yatch, as -Z-, or other article is inserted between and below the [laps into the pocket the lower ends ot' the tlaps close together thus closing the mouth or' the pocket and preventing' the accidental displacement or withdrawal of the watch or other article by means of the chain, as -Z/e-. and that in order to remove the y'atch or other article it necessary to insert the fingers between and to spread. apart the flaps against the action of the springl and then to grasp the watch between the lingers and withdraw the saine through the opening` caused b v the spread of the tlaps.
ll'hen reinserting the watch or other article in the pocket, it autoinaticall;7 spreads or separates the flaps by wedging betweeny theln until disposed in the pocket below such liaps whereupon the lower ends of the 'flaps again close over the watch to retain it in the pocket..
lt will be observed that one ofthe arms -`l.` is sointwvhat shorter and lies within the plane of the opposite corresponding arin and that the extension 3* ot' the shorter arm 1- also lies within the v rtical plane of the corresponding extension, so that the lower free edge of the L against and within theiniarginal edge of the opposite flap. thereby effectively closing` vthe opening` to the pocket. It is also obs served that these i'laps although secured at the loop end to the corresponding end of the pocket the opposite or free ends of the flap terminate a short distance from the cor; responding' end ot the pocket considerabi)7 less than the diameter of an ordinary watch for the reception of the watch chain or fob.
3y terminatingl the flaps at one end short 110 ot the corresponding end of the pocket leavf ing room :for the free play of the chain in flap may tit clos/cli;`
will eauee said watch to he dellerted h v tlv i lower edfree ol the flaps between one or the other o1" the t'laps and adliaeent hide oi" the .poe-liet rather than between the laps, therehy r elifeetirely preventingA the removal,d or' the watch hy Surh meana, owing to the r'aety that the flapA are stitched at along' their upiriier edges to the sides ol' the pockets, the only opening; heling between the llape and a short Siaee at ene end thereof.
'.he invention therefore resides more particularly in securing the upper edges et the [taps to opposite sidese or the poelret and` spring preesing'their lower toward each ether, en as te etl'e'etively close the in tervening space and also in making the flaps somewhat shorter than the length ot' the pooliet te leave aehain opening` at one or the other ot the ends and -aleo in making the lower edge e'lI the one flap somewhat shorter and ot lese 'verticalheight than the opp( ilap so that they will lit snugly one within the other.
llvhat l claim is:
l. ln eomliinatien with a pocket, a pocket fastener comprisingA opposite i'lape stitched along Ytheir upper edges to opposite sides ot the poelret.v and having' their lewer edges Spring preQSed againrt. eaeh other one of the Yllapri being Shorter vertically and long lgitudinally than the other flap.
ln combination with a poeliet, a poefet laetener Comprising elongated llaps etitehed aloneA their upper edges the pocket and having;Y their lower edges springr prese-ed against each other7 one end olf said iaps being spaced apart from the eorrepending` end of the pocket.
tn opposite sides of l il. pocket 'liaetener comprising opposite Aepring arme having oneend provided with upward extensions united by a spring eoil and their opposite ende` provided With similar upward extensions having inwardly projecting;A otl'eets and fabric sheaths inelosing Said arms and extensions.
Lt. In a pocket fastener, spring arme having one end provided with upwardly projeeting extensions united hy a .fspring coil and their opposite ends )varovided with similar upward extensione having .inwardly pro- ,y jecting lateral; offsets, said arms being' springl tensioned toward each other. l
ln a pocket fastener, spring arms haw ing` one end providetfl with upwardly projecting extensione united hy a Spring` eoil and their uppotite endel provided with sin1ilar upward extensions having inwardly proieei'inj; lateral ')tl'sets-;:nd arms hemer spring tensioned toward each other, and eheaths in eloeing the arms and exteneioney and having` their upper edges stitched to the inner 'faces of opposite Sides ot the pocket near the open side thereof.
(3. in a pocket fastener, opposite llana stitched along their upper Sides to the inner edges ot' the pocket and having their lower i ends Spring preeeed toward eaeh other` said llaps terminating at one end Short o'l` the adjacent end of the pocket, the lower portion ot one of the flaps being of less length and ol less vertical depth than the opposite tiap.
ln witnessy whereot1 I have hereunto eet my hand on this 12th day of March i910.
