JAMES-1n. vHAivrMoNn,.or SEDALIA., Missounr.
Letters Patent N 97,911,dated-December 14, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all ivhom 'it may concerns" Be it known thatLJAMEs R. HAmroNmbfSedalla, in the county of Pettis, and State of Missouri,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Derricks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof,
- which willI enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, ,in
which- Figure l is a top viewlffmy improved derrick.
Figure 2 is avertical detail section of the same, taken through .the line x x, figsl. l
Similar Aletters of reference indicate .corresponding parts. l
My invention has forits object-to furnish an improved derrick, simple in construction, effective in op? eration, and easily moved from place to place, designed especially for use in connection with my improved rake, thresher,I loader, and stacker, but equally applicable for other uses; and l It consists in the' construction and combination of various parts of 'the derrick, as hereinafter morefully described.
A'are thewheels oi' the derricktrucl, the axles B oi" which are made high, and are slotted longitudinally,
as shown in fig. 2.
are the bottom boards, two of which are used, and which are placed, the one idirectl y above the other, as shown in iig-f2; The rear ends of the bottom 'boards C are secured, the one to the ripper and the `other to the lower part of the rear axle ',B. 'lhe forward ends of the bottom boards C are secured to bblsters, which are pivoted by a pin or king-bolt, the lower part oi D is the standard of the derrick, the lower end of which passes down through a hole in the middle part ot`tl ie,upper bottom board, andinto the socket formed in o'r attached tothe middle part of the lower bottom board. i `E isa stand, formed'byattaching an upright or post' to aba'sedi'ame, said upright being made of i such a height as to lit beneath the middle part ofthe lower bottom board U. 'The stand Eis designed to i .be placed directly beneatlrthe npright'or shaft D of the del-rick, to `sustain the downward pressure of the weight upon said del-rick.
. To the upper end of the shaft D is attached'a cross-arm F, which inclines slightly dow nward, frozn its'centre toward its ends, as shown in iig. 2.
V' G is the car, to which the hoisting-apparatus is attached. The hoisting-apparatusis not shown in the drawing, as there is nothing new about its construction. The car G is provided with one or more frictionthat by pulling upon the said cord I, the shoulder o catch of the car maybe. raised out of the notchor i rollers, to make it move easily, and with, guards to keep it in place upon the arm F. The car' Gr is so formed as `to bearA only upon its middle part and lower end, 'and has a shoulder upon its lower side, to fit into notches or recesses upon the upper side of the crossearm F.
yTo the upper end of the car G, or to the guardarms attached to said upper end, is attached a cord,
H, which passes over a guidepulley,fh, pivoted to the side of the cross-arm F, near its middle part,
that by pulling downward upon the saidrrope H,-the
oar G may be drawn inward toward the shaft D of the derrick. To the upper end 'of the car G, or 4to one of th guard-arms attached to-said upper end of the cui,
is attached a cord, I, which extends downward, s
is to be deposited, and the hoisting-apparatus hasl been slackened, the weighted car- K may draw tbe `cross-arm F back into its proper position.
The car Ky may be weighted'more or less, as may be desirable. a
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentr Il. The car G and ropes H and I, iu combination with the recessed inclined cross-arm F of the vertical pivoted shaft D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes .set forth.
The double-inclined plane L, and weighted carl K, in combination with the cross-arm F of the vertivcal shaft D of .the dei-rick, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. An improved portable derrick, formed by the combination of the truck A B C, stand E, shaft D,` cross-arm F, car, G, ropes H I, rope J, weighted vcar K, and double-inclined plane L, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
