CZARY W. HENRY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
AERIAL ROPEWAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed November 20, 1908. Serial No. 468,688.
T o all whom 'it' may concern.'
Be it known that I, CEZARY WV. HENRY, a citizen of the United States of Brazil, residing at Detroit, in the county of 7ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aerial Itopeways; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in telpher and towing apparatus or aerial tramways and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of fastening the ends of the rope tracks. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of a modified forni of track. F ig. 5 is a side elevation of the form shown in Fig. t. Fig. 6 is a sectional View on line 6-6 of Fig. t. Fig. 7 is a detailed view showing the means for operating the brake mechanism. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view showing parts in elevation. Fig. 9 is a detail in side elevation. Fig. l0 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of track, and Fig. ll is a detail perspective view showing the manner of fastening` the collar to a rack bar.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a car which may be of any size or shape and to the top of the car are pivotally connected the hangers B, and a rope C is connected to one of said hangers and passes about a pulley C, thence about a drum C2 upon the shaft C3, thence passes over a second drum C4 mounted upon the shaft C5 and then eX- tends over a pulley C and is fastened to the other hanger, as shown clearly in l of the drawings.
D, I) designate sleeves, each of which is swivelly mounted upon a pivot D fastened to the rack bar E, and F, F designate pinion Wheels mounted upon the shafts C3 and C5 respectively and adapted to engage the teeth of said bar rack. 'l'he tracks, there being two parallel to each other, are designated in the drawings by letter I-I and may be either of rope or a solid rigid bar H, as shown in Fig. l0 of the drawings, said tracks being suitably mounted. The truck of the apparatus comprises the axles G upon which grooved sheaves Gr are mounted and adapted to ride upon said tracks, and I designate casings for said sheaves. Brace bars l are fastened to said casing at the end of the axle and their lower ends are angled as at K and upon which are journaled the double grooved pulleys L. Mounted intermediate the double pulleys L is av pulley L2 mounted upon the end of a brace rod L3, the upper end of which is connected to the axle Gr, and a crank handle L is fastened to the pulley L2 and provides means whereby the same may be rotated. One portion of each pulley L has a cam L4 in the grooves thereof, as shown clearly in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and M, M designate two brake members pivoted together at M, the upper ends of said members being adapted to frictionally grip the track or cable for the purpose of applying a brake to the tramway. A belt, designated by letter N, passes about the double pulleys and also the central pulley, the belt being constructed as shown and so arranged that, when the pulley L2 is rotated, the double pulleys may be turned so that the brake members will grip or release the track or cables, the releasing being eifected by the spreading of the lower ends of the members M and made to grip the track or cables when said members are engaged by the narrow portions of the cams.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I have shown a means for holding the two ends of sections of the track or rope to the hanger S by grooving the adjacent edges of the downwardly projecting arms of said hanger S and the intermediate block S and causing the cable or rope to be held frictionally to the hanger.
In operation, the apparatus is mounted upon the cables or tracks in the manner shown and, by the provision of the rack bar which engages the pinions which in turn are connected to the hangers B, the car may be kept at all times in a horizontal position though the truck may deviate from such position. Said truck, it will be noted, has a Ile movement backward and forward through the sleeves D so that, whenthe truck goes up or down, the hangers B begin to move backward and forward and push or pulll the rack whichl in turn communicates the motion to the pinions and drums or cylinders C2 which will cause one end or the other of the car to be raised or lowered.
Vhen it is desired to apply the brakes, it may be done at either end of the car by simply causing the crank handle L to be rotated through which said hangers are adapted toV have longitudinal movements, pulleys upon the truck, drums, shafts upon whichY the same are mounted, pinion wheels fixed to said shafts and in mesh with said rack bars, and a cable connected to said hangers and passing about said pulleys and drums, as set forth.
2. An aerial tramway apparatus comprising tracks, a truck having grooved sheaves mounted upon the axles thereof and resting upon said tracks, a car suspended from said truck, a brake mechanism carried by the truck and adapted to frictionally engage said tracks, hangers pivotally connected to the car, alongitudinally movable rack bar', sleeves swivelecl thereon and through which said hangers have longitudinal movements,
drums, shafts upon which the same are mounted, pinions rotating with said drums and in mesh with said rack bar, and a cable connected to the ends of said hangers and passing about said pulleys and drums, as set forth.
8. In combination with aerial tram tracks, a truck having grooved wheels mounted upon said tracks, casings for said wheels, a
car suspended from the truck, means for holding the latter horizontally, bars secured to said truck, grooved pulleys mounted upon said bars, said pulleys having cam grooves, pivotal brake members adapted to be actuated by said cam grooves to grip the tram track, and means for rotating said pulleys, as set forth.
4. In combination with aerial tram tracks,
ay truck having grooved wheels mounted upon said tracks, casings for said wheels, a ar suspended from the truck, means for `uolding the latter horizontally, bars secured co said truck, grooved pulleys mounted upon said bars, said pulleys having cam grooves, pivotal brake members adapted to be actue ated by said cam grooves to. grip the tram track, a pulley intermediatesaid cam grooved pulleys, and belted connections between the pulleys whereby the cam grooved pulleys may be rotated to actuate said brake inembers, as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CEZARY l/V. HENRY. lVitnesses HUGH MoCoRMroK, J oHN E. MGGILL.
