NICHOLAS KIROHNEB, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CABLE RAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355.826, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed November 13, 1886. Serial No. 218,743. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS KIROHNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gable Railways, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an elevated cable railway which will be capable of attaining a high rate of speed, and which will be less costly and more convenient than the ordinary surface-cable systems.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car and trestle embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section of Fig. l on line 1 2; Fig. 3, an end elevation of the rear wheels; Fig. 4, an end view of the upper end of the front suspending-bar; Fig. 5, a side view of the same; Fig.6, an end view of the grip and rod for operating it, and Fig. 7 a side view of theforward wheels.
A is the car. At the forward end is a rod, B, which is securely fastened to the car, and the upper end of which is attached to a bar, 0, which is carried by the forward truck. At the rear end is a rod, D, which passes up and is held by the axle of the rear truck.
The rails E are suspended in any suitable manner from a framework, F, which is erected in the street, and the car is suspended so as to clear the ground by from eighteen to twenty-four inches. I
The upper end of the rod B is flattened out, as shown in Fig. 4, and to this flattened part the grip is fastened. The grip consists of two plates, G G, which are secured by pivotsH H to the flattened part of rod B.
I is the rod for operating the grip. Upon the top of this rod is a head or wedge, J, which, being pushed up or down, causes the grip to be opened or closed.
K is a lever for operating the grip-rod.
The grip-rod extends down, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and its lower endis bent to form an elbow, which is fastened at 'its end to a shaft, a. To this shaft the lever K is also fastened; hence by pushing lever K the wedge J is caused to descend, closing the grip, and by pulling the lever the Wedge is raised, openingv the grip.
The brake consists of a beam; L, which is pivoted to thetruck at I). There are two of these beams-one upon each side of the forward truckand these beams are furnished with shoes c,which are adapted to bear upon each of the four wheels of the truck. Extending from one beam to the other is arod,d,towhich arod, M, is attached. This rod extends down, and is bent at an angle at its lower end and secured to a shaft, a. To this shaft is also secured a lever, N. By pushing'this lever the brake is put on. Bypulling it itis taken off. The rear truck consists of but two wheels,O 0. To the center of their axle the rod D is secured. Upon each side of this rod are pulleys PP, over one of which the cable Qpasses after leaving the grip. The rod D is extended above thepulleys P P',.and its top is beveled off, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the cablewill always run in one or other of the pulleys. After the cable leaves these pulleys it falls upon one of the rollers R, of which there area number placed at regular intervals along the insides ofboth tracks E,and it is supported and guided by these'rollers.
The cable is driven by machinery of any suitable description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A grip consisting of two plates, GG, pivoted to some suitable fixture carried by the trucks at H H, and being operated by a wedge, J, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with thewheels of the forward truck, of the beam L, pivoted to the truck-frames atb and furnished with shoes 0 and'rods d and hi, and devices, as described, for lowering or raising these rods, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of rod D with beveled top, as described, pulleysP P,and wheelsO 0, all substantially as and forthe purposes set forth.
I NICHOLAS KIROHNER.
