Description

I H. N. BILL.
Stove Pipe Thimble.
Patented Dec. 14, 1869.
HORATIO N. BILL, or WTLLIMANTIO, CONNECTICUT.
' Letters Patent Zt0. 9'i',861, dated December 14, 1369.,
STOVE-PIPE THIMBLH.
. 'lhe Schedule referred to'in, these Patten; Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom ttnwy concern:
, Be it known that I,-Hon.x!r1o N. BILL,of.Willimautio, in the countyof Windham, and State of Con-' necticut, have invented a new and improved vAdj u'stable Stove-Pipe Thimblepand I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, andexact description thereoffwhich will enable others skilled in the art .to make and use the: same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, forming part of this specification. p
' This invention relatesto improvements in thimbles for the passage of stove-pipes through the walls into flues; and consists in providing a vertically-sliding thimble plate ina metallic franie, having along openiug, and adapted for insertion in an opening through the wall, so as to supportthe thin plate at or about "the lineof the inner face of the fine-wall, so that the plate may be drawn up, or down, to vary the height of "the thimble for. pipes of different vertical lengths.
The intention also comprises an improved mode of attaching the thimbles to this plate by means of radial studs at the rim, separated from the main part of the I1-im',' a nd bent inward, soasl to pass through slots in the thimble-plate around the hole, to engage behind the edge of the plate by turning the thimbles on their axes a short distance, after being passed through the slots, while the main part of the rims of the-said thimbles bear against the front face of the thimbleplate and cover the slots when-so turned. -Fi'gnre 1 represents after it, elevation of my improve-d device; 7.
. Figure, 2 represents areal, elevation of the same;
Figure 3 represents a sectional elevation ofthe same and f Figure 4 represents a plan view of a thimble.
. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
A is the thimblc-plate, consistingoi' a long strip of metal, of any suitable kind, preferably sheet-metal,
and provided with a circular hole, B, for the thimble. This plate is notched around the hole,.as shown at O, and the plate is fitted to slide up and down in a long metal or other frame, D, andadapted for insertion in an opening through the Wall, and provided with. guides Eat the rear F is a button or-pawl attached to the rear side of the plate, to bear against the guides E, or against the wall of the opening through the brick wall,to hold the plate at the required height. I
The thimbles G,Iare stamped in any required form,
and out from the periphery inward a suitable distance to form projections, H, whieh, being suitably'set or bent inward at the bottom of the cuts, will pass through the'notches G in the plate, and, being turned on the axis of the thimbl'e, will engagelhehind the plate A,
to hold the thimbles in place, while the other parts of the rim will cover thenotches O.
These thimbles are to be made withtholes of differ? ent sizes, for pipe otdifi'ereht size, and are to be interchanged as required, while the height'of. the hole is varied by sliding the-plate up or down. It is intended to arrange these frames 'so that. the
plates A may be reached through the fire-place, by any suitable device, for changing them, or they may be pressed up or down by the application. of force at the outside, in any suitable way. r
In the latter case, the button will be arranged so as to be raised out of contact with the. wall from the outside for lowering the plate. The projections of the thimbles and the parts of the plates behind which they turn, are arranged to have sufiicient draw in a spiral direction, to clamp" the two tightly together.
Having thus describedmyinvention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a frame, D, provided with grooves or guides E, and adapted for application in openings in the flue-walls, as described, of the sliding thimble-platc A, provided-with an opening, B, for the reception of a pipe or thimble, substantially as specified. i f
2. The mode of attaching the thimbles G to the plates A, by means of the bent projections H onthe former, passing through the notches O in the plates, andturning behind the parts of the plate adjacent to the notches, substantially as specified,
,3. The combination of the plate A, frame D, and button F, all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by I me, this 16th day of October, 1869. .HOBATIO N. BILL.
